Metal sux.

But Metallica from Kill em All to And Justice for All are the definitive metal band. Slayer, phah, without the Devil and Christianity they'd be nothing. Metallica stand up without leaning on dumb-ass religion.

Yes, but Metallica got rich, fat and boring. Slayer still manage to put a smile on me face. Reign in Blood is best album EVAR!

OK yeah Metallica sold out in the worst possible way:

"We're never going to make videos."

"OK we'll make One video."

"OK let's make videos."

"We don't need radio play because we got the hardcore fans."

"A little bit of radio play is alright."

"Let's make as many radio friendly songs as we can."

And you all know the rest.

So yes, modern Metallica is only "'Lica the sack" and have lost their way. That's why I said Metallica before all this recent last decade's junk.

The black album was the last Metallica I ever bought.

you cannot even compare the two...

slayer are not only still going, but they have NEVER released something bad.

i know you said you only like some of metallica's output, but the simple fact that SLAYER DONT EVER SUCK should prove that they, and not metallica or radiohead, are the best band ever.

also, in a fist fight any member of metallica would lose against any member of slayer. and that is even if metallica had a gun to share and slayer were blindfolded.

I'm not exactly a metal fan but I like certain heavy riff-based music (er, Ministry).

Slayer is one of the only metal bands I like. "Reign in Blood" is good (esp. "Angels of Death") but "South of Heaven" is my favorite, esp. the title track and "Mandatory Suicide".

I haven't heard any of their post-80's stuff though.

the newest album was ace.
i say was, because i left it at my aunt and uncle's house in perth.

they are still rocking the satanic vibe, and the insanely heavy riffage.

best line, shouted in a pause between guitars raising the dead:

i keep the bible in a pool of blood
so that none of its lies can affect me!

not really sure of the banishing power of blood on a text, but i'll go with it.

i think one reason for the mass appeal of slayer is that here really is NONE HEAVIER.

also, i think they share a characteristic with drum and bass, or at least the jungle variety.
in the same way that there are three speeds to jungle, there are three to slayer. you can bang your head to the riffing, but that will hurt soon enough. you can bang it to the beat, but not for a whole show. you can bang it to the pulse, the really slow almost sabbath like ebb and flow of the music, but that feels wrong most of the time.

i personally do all three, alternating between them as i get tired or excited. or as my drugs kick in and wear off, i suppose.

Pfff this is nonsensical! Almost anyone with a gun could shoot almost anyone else who was blindfolded. Shoot them dead. Perhaps without trying too hard.

Sure, maybe that Kurt guy or Lars couldn't do it, but put that heater in the hands of one of those other two goons and BLAM. A dead blindfolded Slayer member. BLAM. Another dead blindfolded Slayer member. BLAM...

You see what I'm saying?

But I agree. I think Slayer would whoop their asses in a fist fight. Even if Lars and Kurt had knives. They'd probably run away and leave those other two goons to get curbed.

And as for "none heavier than Slayer" get some Neurosis but not the more recent stuff. That's heavy. That's metal.

The last Metallica I bought was St Anger in a fit of hopeless optimism. Took the bastard straight back to the shop the next day, though.

Bob is a poor, misguided fool.

Slayer aren't just better than Metalica, they've reached a whole other plain of being, they've wormholed it into another dimension entirely.. in the world where Slayer reign, the word 'Metalica' means nothing, except possibly to certain scholars of long forgotten trivia and historical anachronisms. To them it is synonymous with "Shitty Non-Metal Wiener Music".

As to the gun/blindfold scenario, I'd wager that conventional weapons are powerless against Slayer. And deep down you know it.

Welcome to the. Realm. of. SAAATTAAANNNN!!!

slayer are not only still going, but they have NEVER released something bad.

To play devil's advocate (DEVIL! \m/) for a moment, I have to admit "Undisputed Attitude" is shockingly poor.

But then, as Nick Cave (who rocks about a quarter as much as Slayer) pointed out in a recent interview, no musician can truly claim classic status until they've released at least one absolute stinker of a record, and overcome it by becoming good again. Slayer have. 'Metalica' rather conspicuously HAVEN'T.

Yes, but I have much SLACK.

At least Metallica aren't propped up mostly by their make-believe worship of some Xtian anti-God. Talk about misguided fools.

And the fans who take their pretend image seriously? Well, I could say something about sacks of hammers and their smarts, but that would only excite them!

Man, Pantera have all of nothing on Slayer. Slayer's tighter, faster, heavier and all around way fucking better than Pantera. The only band that's in the metal genre that I like better than Slayer is Motorhead, and you just can't fuck around with Lemmy.

neurosis.
well, yeah.
but they are nowhere near as fast, are they?

nothing is scarier than a huge fuck off juggernaut coming straight for you.
nothing, that is, except one coming straight for you at 250 miles an hour.

as for propped up by anti gods...
what are you sayin bout SATAN?

at least they arent propped up by a love of money, and backed by an orchestra.

i mean, how much cocaine do you need to take before it sounds like a good idea to have your THRASH classic backed by a philharmonic?

But toksik, you are talking about modern Metallica and I am talking about classic Metallica.

Modern Metallica aren't worth the price of the scrap paper Kirk (that's his name isn't it, I think I made a mistake above?) writes his riffs on. Classic Metallica are the definitive metal band of which all others are pale shadows. End of story.

Speed is a relative thing and heaviness need not have any speed until it is raining down on your head. But then its speed isn't fast of itself but to you. Confusing? Yes. Think about it.

What am I saying about Satan? Well, he's but the whipping boy of a group of largely deluded followers of some dude pinned to a stick a couple thousand years ago. Boring. History. Get over it.

Bob, I hate to say this, but your wrong.
Wrong as a wrong thing.
Metallica up to and including Justice are one of the best bands this planet has ever seen. That's just Fact, there's no arguing that. The problem is that Slayer realised Reign in Blood. 28 minutes long and is the best metal album of all time and blew everyone off the CD stands.
Words are failing me at this hour of the morning.

DiG odd to see you so off the ball on a metal topic. Pantera? Wow! They only have one good album. Even Sepultura's Arise blows them out of the water.

\m/

rock on.

Pantera?? Matellica??

Shit guys, your taste is shockingly lacking in regard to this matter* that I might well take to frequenting Terrorizer's forum instead. They don't tolerate know-nothing yahoos going around dissing Slayer!

And by a bizarre twist of fate I'm listening to Neurosis right now. Bunch of nonsense if you ask me. Sounds like Metallica trying to be all gothic and 'intense'. Bleugh.

Seriously though, I can't believe this is still the #1 topic in the music forum three or four days after I started it largely in order to mock the radiohead thread and the general foolishness of declaring one band "the best ever".

*Apart from Cop Killer and Uncle Retrospective of course. They clearly know what's what.

Uncle Retro, you hurt my feelings. Pantera are pretty much my favourite band ever.

If we are talking fast and heavy, then everyone should own 'City' by Strapping Young Lad. An absolute masterpiece. It rates right up there with Reign in Blood for me.

And as much as I like Slayer, we all have to face the fact that they haven't released a good album since Seasons in the Abyss. Just like Metallica haven't since Master of Puppets, Megadeth haven't since Rust in Piece etc etc

Seeing as though there seems to be a bit of a Death/Black metal fanbase around these parts i'd thought i'd throw my tuppence in with a couple of recommendations. If you have the cash go and buy the new Zyklon album 'Aeons', or the new Children of Bodom album 'Hate Crew Deathtoll'. Alternatively, PM me I can send you a copy.

Sorry DiG didn't mean to hurt your feelings, I just found it odd that you'd have such a thing for (what I feel) were a one album band.

I mean no harm. Anyway it looks like it's you, me, CK and Riz and a big wall of noise against the world.

Slayer have girly hair and one of them has a girly name and they've all expressed needlessly homophobic sentiments and I find this very telling.

But that's beside the point. Their "music" is really really bad. They talk about satan? 3DGY!

I agree. Join us for tea?

Rizla: are you listening to newer Neurosis which sucks ass or old Neurosis which eats babies for breakfast? I would strongly recomend "Enemy Of The Sun" for immense listening pleasure.

Slayer have girly hair and one of them has a girly name and they've all expressed needlessly homophobic sentiments and I find this very telling.

A "glametal" band? Slayer and Poison ought to go on tour together. Or do an album together and then go on tour:

"Every Rose has it's
Dayofblood in sacrifice the lamb bleeds
bent on weeping knees
my hair looks great tonight
Don't you love the shades of
THE DEVIL's
lipstick selection."
