As with many things, I think a plain white (NOT BAGGY) t-shirt might go with those trousers, Charellz, but as always try it on, try it on. I think you'd want to top that off with a jacket/blazer, though (pinstripe or otherwise).

Red shoes? Red T-shirt? Depends on your colouring I suppose.

I live in Texas, so I'll be going sans-jacket, seeing as it's 100 degrees and I'm melting. I'm not fond of red on me, and the only shoes I own are black and white. I might give the red a shot, but I'll probably end up in white. Thanks for the advice.

Catsuit update: Is fabulous with a studded belt around the hips, another doubled around my neck, and peacock feathers going between them so they fan out behind my shoulders and head. Silly? Oh-no-no-no.

Will be attending fancy dress this weekend and was all of a panic as to what I will dress up as, until I took the easy route and decided I would go as a punk rocker (aesthetically pleasing and easy to do).

I don't want to surrounded by shreds of 14 t-shirts before I get it right, so feasible rippings?

Any other relatively easy, aesthetically pleasing fancy dress ideas?

Those pics were front and back by the way.

I'm not sure that the one right down the back would work -I would probably leave a wee bit of fabric either end just to hold the whole thing together, otherwise the tshirt will probably choose to hang off one shoulder and end up looking saggy and odd rather than totally punk rock. Other than that, though, looks good!

Other people will need to have fancy dress ideas as I tend to go for 'goth' by default which is far less original than punk..

I'm rather liking the military-influenced gear in the British high street at the mo. I think I like the trend because I've worn a lot of army surplus clothing, and this feels as though it's army surplus that has grown up to match me - it keeps the style but actually fits, and isn't made of horse hair. See the Admiralty Collection from Top Shop for samples - their fitted military jacket, which won't provide a clear link, is adorable and embodies the tragedy of underage Napoleonic boysoldiers.

So, frogging, asymetric buttoning with metal buttons, cuff buttons, braiding, epaulettes.

It's unlikely I'll buy anything until the sales, but to hone my attack plan, any other nice examples around the place? Ideally in black or grey, and super-ideally not cut off so abruptly at the waist (although I know that's part of the style- it makes me look like a tin soldier, which is cute, but not elegant).

Ex, have you tried Zara? (think there's still a large one on Regents Street)

They've got very good design people, are very reasonably priced for what you get and pick up catwalk trends very quickly. Reckon they'd be worth a look.

Those jackets from Topshop are great -- wish we had that here in LA.

What about a really tight denim jacket with a black jumper to separate it from the jeans? Is that okay? I know it's probably not, but you know...

Zara have weird fits on some of their lines though, don't go in there if you're full of rage.

And Topshop is waaayyy overpriced at the moment.

Reader, I bought one. One of the Topshop jackets, that is. They are wonderful, and also surprisingly warm. New Look had some stuff a bit like that, and might have more in London -also had a look in Cult clothing, and Fenchurch seem to come the closest to what you want. I doubt they will be cheaper than Topshop, though (and the website isn't great -broken images ago-go...)

Good on you, Vincennes. I bet it look ssplendid. And I swear not to mug you at the next Barbemeet. No, not at all.
Helping my temptation is the fact the New Look (you never let me down when it was important/when I was fifteen) is stocking a lighter-weight black version with pewter buttons. Very pretty. 25 quid.

The other option is that I customise something else - do people think that sticking frogging and new buttons all over a perfectly good jacket would work, or just look wrong panto? I suspect the cut of the garment would have to be altered as well, to an extent I can't attempt.

Sorry, GGM - forgot - am going to check out Zara later this week.

I tink you would need to alter the cut also. I can almost envisage a way in which it might be done, but I think it would probably only look presentable from a distance (if at all). Unless you can find a cropped jacket in the right sort of cut (which I think would be possible - there have been not-too-dissimilar ones around for some years)...

They are v v fashionable and will no doubt be in all the sales before Christmas, but by that time you might be fed up with them...

Altering the cut is a tricky proposition with that sort of style, unless you have teh dressmaking skillz *or* you find something plausible in a charity shop, I'd steer clear.

Buuuut, (ex)Stateside Scrubb and I were discussing this last night, and we believe we have a solution:

Primark. You might have to check in over the next couple of months, as they're always a bit slower to pick up catwalk direction, but with such a strong trend they are bound to have something along those lines pretty soon.

There's the odd surprsingly good fabric in there, and whatever you find will be cheapos, and ripe for a bit of customising.

From what I've read about Primark (mostly gleaned from the Sunday Times style supplement), it's pretty quick at capitalising on catwalk trends - the naval/military styled jackets being an example - and the problem's more likely to be the fact that said articles have already rushed off the shelves.

Can someone clue me in on what's going on at H & M at the moment? I used to be able to see myself in just about everything they had in the store but the last few times I've been in there hasn't been a single thing I've desired.

The cardies and jackets just seem a bit ... I dunno ... plain?

Does anyone else like H & M and do you think its style has changed over the last 6-12 months?

Just to say that 'nesh is correct and Primark-by-th-sea was this afternoon chock-full of military jackets. Including a rather beautiful velvet one for the princely sum of £15!!!

Crikey - velvet militaria? I may explode.

In case anyone's not seen the goods yet, there's a slideshow here.

I did buy the best coat evahhhh a coat yesterday - wool, full length, double-breasted flared military cut, aubergine, pewter buttons - for 8 quid from a charity shop. It's partly sated my desires, and is something to look forward to this Winter.

H&M goes through phases, about a year ago the majority of the female line sucked. Now it's back on form, which is frankly dangerous. I suspect that in 12 months time you'll find the menswear back to normal and turning out okay clothes again.

Any idea what shoes/top to wear with a denim (mini)skirt? My friend (about 5'4, brown hair/blonde highlights, caucs. with a deep tan) is opting for white wedges but is open to suggestions about either (top or shoes).

OJ

What's the occasion Ms Triplets? A denim mini skirt can be a fast route to tartiness for 90% of people. The 10% include skinny young girls under 18 and skinny women under 25.

I'd say flat shoes and a casual top, without much flesh showing. The minute you put heels on, especially with blonde hair, people will think of Jennifer Ellison.

Could look good with baseball boots and a surfy vest/sweatshirt combo for example.

Ugg-style flat suede or leather/fur boots, a white men's style shirt and a suit jacket (preferably pinstriped) will class and sexy up the look, esp. if she has nice legs.

Aren't Uggs a little Yummy Mummy circa '03/'04?

Gnnnnnnn, the phrase "Yummy mummy" makes me want to hurl toddlers. It's a pet hate.

I think of it as the acceptable 2005 way to say "rich housewife". Its patron saint of clothing is the cashmere vest. Utterly pointless and no better than its cotton counterpart, but it screams "Julian's business is doing so well"

Am I right?

It is a terrible phrase, mainly for the smugness it suggests. I saw the most loathsome child's T-shirt that proudly stated "My Mummy is a Yummy Mummy" *shudder*

OJ

That T-shirt is a truly horrid prospect.

Actually, that cashmere vest doesn't scream, it sneers pityingly at lesser mortals perusing the sales rack in Hobbs.

Digression over.

That denim mini could also look good punked up with clumpy (flat) pirate boots, military jacket, perhaps a white flouncy pirate shirt.

I thought it was mainly applied by others to mothers, rather than by mothers to themselves? In a vaguely sneery way... 'Jacinta is a full-time mother but seems more concerned with her own appearance and wine at lunch with the girls than with actually looking after her children, which she leaves to the au pair...' a bit like Polly Filler, basically.

Sorry, threadrot.

I think wedges would be fine, esp if she has any concerns about her legs (mind you, anyone with concerns about her legs is scarcely likely to be buying a denim miniskirt, is she?). Espadrille type ones might be nice. (but I don't like Ugg boots on anyone, so... YMMV).

I'm sure your (ahem) "friend" will look lovely, Trips.

KKC - I can order the pattern for you, if you want. I'm Paypalled up, as soon as I can unite computer and place where password is stored...

Questions: waistcoats. Dunn and co. appear to have ceased production, and I needs me some new waistcoat loving. What for you makes a good waistcoat and, if worn with a two-piece suit, what colours and fabrics do you favour?
