It's always the people in the middle ground who get the rough deal. You think the clothes-world is bad, you should try being an average student.

What I need to make my life complete are the following two items:

1/ A long sheepskin coat with a great big 40's filmstar-esque fluffy collar and cuffs.

2/ A proper velvet corset that doesn't stop just above my belly button, but that comes further down to the top of my hips and that nicely highlights the large breastedness rather than just looks slutty.

But, *sigh,* I can find neither of them anywhere. I even went to New York and couldn't find a coat there. And I could do with the both of them for New Years Eve.

Depute your friends to go and buy things in the sales for you on an HP basis (said friends obviously having no motive to go to H&M themselves).

heh. I love you.

So basically, I'd be doing them a favour...?

We should talk.

Well, I don't know about doing favours - giving excuses seems more accurate...

Let us discuss this matter strictly hush hush and on the QT (I'm not sure why this is necessary but I have always wanted to discuss something hush hush and on the QT).

So, I've just got myself a new laptop and need to get myself a laptop bag to protect it as I'm going about the rough and tumble of my day-to-day life.

Thing is, I'd quite like a bag that'd also work as, well, just my bag that I can use generally to cart around all sorts of other stuff. Also, and actually more importantly if I'm honest, I kinda have some weird dislike of your standard black and angular laptop cases (I know, I know, they're meant to be functional but...)

So, any stylish and practical suggestions for your urban laptop user?

Kat: if that has anything to do with the G/T, I'm in.

Future Perfect, I quite understand yr distaste for laptop bags, they're v. ugly. will have a think.

A long sheepskin coat with a great big 40's filmstar-esque fluffy collar and cuffs.

If anyone makes a coat like this (a readily available coat like this, that is) it would probably be Hooch - I had a check and they don't seem to have any kind of online presence, but somewhere like Cult or Flip (if the latter exists South of the border) would probably have a catalogue if you could take the Paul Frank overload. Either way, they do wonderful big coats in general, so looking through the catalogue won't be a terrible effort...

Vincennes thank you.

I was beginning to think that *sniff* nobody cared about my coat/corset trauma.

Forgive my thickness, but who are Cult, Flip and Hooch? Can I find them in London?

Hahaplums, I have a red adidas tracksuit, so nerr.

Right: serious fashion emergency.

This evening I have to go to a "my favourite levis party" hosted by guess which denim garment behemoth. Levis are obligatory. I have no Levis. Which ones should I buy, if I want to look fabulous?

I want the new minimal japanese ones made out of only two bits of cloth, but they are only available in Japan so that's out. Please don't suggest vintage as this is not an option in singapore...

who are Cult, Flip and Hooch?

Cult is basically a great big Trendy Clothes (tm) chain... I can't imagine there not being one in London, but haven't actually been to one there myself. Flip is possibly only within Scotland, and it used to sell loads of vintage clothes and now mainly sells skater type clothes -it was where I got my Hooch coat, though. As for Hooch, I'm increasingly thinking of them as being highly mysterious, (no website? Honestly) but it's another clothes label which is mainly sold through the shops described above or ones very like them.

Actually, I've just found this which indicates that there might not be a Cult in London... it says where else in the country they are, though, so there might be one close to you! And Mayhem might be worth looking at as well, they're usually excellent...

Laces: Go in Evisu. that would be hilarious.

FP - hoom. Mac shops do quite cool Neoprene ones. You could get a laptop backpack, which I swear by - distributes the weight far better. They have some on sale in Morgan Computer. Muji sell normal-looking canvas shoulderbags with a padded laptop section...

Olula, you can buy Hooch clothing in Therpay on Oxford St, basement of DH Evans I think, one of those dept. stores anyway. Also try MASH clothing on Ox St. higher up nr Virgin, opposite side of road. They stock lots of cool urban stuff, they might stock some of the other labels mentioned by V. For your coat you could also try some vintage clothing shops. An especially good one is Bang Bang on Goodge St. A tad expensive sometimes as they tend to go for vintage labels although not exclusively. They may also keep a look out for one for you, although time is a bit short now. Basque; Agent Provocateur? Go on splash out... you have to pay more for good sex you know! BTW do check out their web site even if you don't make a purchase, lots of cheap thrills to be had, free thrills in fact.

Indeed, there is Hooch in Therapy (I work there), but I wouldnt really say the coats Im thinking of are 40s-ish. Maybe they only have them down south, but the only long hooch coats with fur round the collar/cuffs/bottom are the long, slightly padded ones in black, cream or kahki. But if Hooch do one, no doubt Bench will do one almost exactly the same: they're pretty damn similar.

As a general rule, I wont wear things with brand names splashed all over them, but I got a hooch top, thats green with 'Hooch' in green all over it, diagnoally. Its quite funky.

Did anyone get clothes for Christmas? Most people know not to even think about buying me apparel that I haven't chosen myself, but Ma and Pa bought me an Armani Exchange T-shirt while in New York. Surprisingly it fits very well (if I hold my stomach in, which I managed to do all New Year's Eve) and it's a nice colour - kind of a dusky powdery blue.

The only problem is, everyone says I now look like Simon Cowell when I wear it. Can this possibly be?

Oh crikey. That is rather harsh.

My mother, God bless her, got me a sweater from High and Mighty, on the grounds that my current sweaters I got in a sale three years ago and they are all ratty and knackered. This is rather the point, of course, but after a hot wash it now fits rather nicely, and is very warm and surprisingly tasteful as sweaters from mothers go...

Have bought *myself* lots of clothes, but that's a bit different...

A lady who share half my genes; she is, effectively, half me. Yet how can my beloved sister get it so, so wrong?

Its a fitted zippy cardigan thingumy. So far so good? The sleeves are like a jumper with the rows of up-bits and down-bits. Also, fully acceptable. But they are a cross between the colour of puss and shit. The front part of the item is like moleskin, yet shiny, and in a similar attractive colour. It's finished off with a fur trim at the bottom and all around the collar/hood, and its not good fur. I can do good fur, but this is horrible, shiny, brown, ooky fur. And the combo of the 3 very similar yet clashing yucky browns, and the 3 materials, and and and... dear lord.
She lives in Greece, so I could get away with never wearing it, but for my guilt. But I havent told her that I dont like it. Should I? Should I send it back to her, so she could exchange it? Give it to her next christmas? Euch.

My other sister, god bless her, made up for sister 1s mistake. She bought me purple flowery wellies, and I love them to bits.
My biggest bro gave me a black strapless dress with pink polkadots, which I asked for. Goes nicely with the wellies, actually.

My best beloved got me a jumper (with absolutely no prompting from me, very impressive) to add to my collection of black polo-neck jumpers. This one is placed in a higher class than usual by the addition of pink and green stripes, and a metal tag which we had to take out with pliers, and is generally spot on.

I too have bought myself lots of clothes and am only having second thoughts about half of them, which is not bad.

I bought shoes. They're flat, made of black suede and have white laces that criss cross over the open top (the actual shoe being a bit of a ballet piece) and tie up at the ankle. I own ballet trainers, praise the inventor of footwear!

I need some help with a costume for a party. The theme is "film characters" and I'm going to go dressed as Amelie. I figured that going as Zorro Amelie would be easiest, with Zorro hat, mask, and cape, but I still need to find some Amelie type clothes. In the Zorro scene, she is wearing a black dress with white spots, that is fairly long, and has straps at the top, with a red cardigan. I have no idea where to get such things from, or even vaguely similar clothes to what she wears in other scenes. I don't have much time to get anything, so chain type stores in the UK or specific places in London, Southampton or Cambridge are probably my only option. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'd try Topshop or Miss Selfridge though you may be a little late, spot season seems to have come to a close.

I was in Topshop the other day and they had in (new) a black and white polka dot pencil skirt, which if you wore it with a black cardigan from Jigsaw or somewhere and boots might pass as Amelie-ish. They still do the more A-line or full 50s style but those aren't the right shape for what you want, I think.

Gah! Tryphena, no! I am still adoring spotty things, and was going to wear a polkadot dress on saturday night, but am now thinking perhaps I am a season behind. But as you say, it was a bit before christmas, so if you do find something Ameliey, it might be in the sales too. I second miss selfridge, where I got the afforementioned dress. I cant for the life of me remember what Amelie wears.

Squirmelia, if you don't want to spend too much on the outfit (ie, if you don't want to wear it again in real life!) then the cheapy end of the high street has polka dotty things - Pilot, New Look, etc, have dotty skirts and dresses. Hennes is a good choice, too - cheap but wearable in a non-costume party way. I was in last week and dots are still around, although you might struggle finding monochrome dots there: there seems to be a lot of black and multicolour dottiness going on.

The horrid cardiganal contraption my sister gave me- I no longer have to deal with! Mum told her I hated it (i didnt have the guts), and she took it and gave me a pair of lovely jeans that she'd shrunk out of. Everybody was all cheery. None more so than me, for not having to wear *that* thing.

Does anyone know where to purchase shoes for wide feet? I am desperate!!! Desperate!!! The only ones I seem to come across are...old grannyish, and I refuse to wear shoes like that, or that look like I have boats for feet.

I have no idea if i should be posting this here, but here's the thing: I need to buy my boyfriend (29) some pants. I want to buy him some cool, casual pants, not preppie - no friggin' khakis. Cargos look stupid on him, 'cause he's got a small frame. What brands are stylish, yet affordable? Where do I start?? I don't want him to be mocked by his friends, yet have no idea what I am doing. Please help.

So a friend of mine and I have been having a debate. He maintains that wearing denim and denim (i.e. denim jacket and jeans) is a fashion faux pas in any situation, and that denim should only be worn with non-denim (I've yet to get a solid answer on what exactly it should be worn with, though...). I say that as long as the color of the denims are different enough or the the pair were made to go together (i.e. jeans and jackets made in the same style, with the same accents etc. by a single designer/company), it is perfectly acceptable. What do y'all think?

Moofman. I'm not really sure about denim on denim. To me it always seems a little bit naff (always reminds me of B*witched), though that might just be me. I don't know I'd go as far as calling it a faux pas though

[moved from an independant thread; concerning seersucker suits]:

so i just moved back to connecticut and have been kind of going on a preppie clothing jag in a spirit i would characterize as more 'playfully exuberant' (perhaps psychotically so) than 'ironic'. pink ties with pale green button-down shirts, sperry-topsiders, all things brooks brothers, you get the picture.

anyway, i want to get a summer suit that can work with this general feeling, and i'm considering this seersucker suit from brooks brothers: Link to the image here.

however, i have reservations. i love the suit, bt would like some outside opinions. that's where you come in. questions:

is this suit too archaic? i want something eye-catching/sharp, but not something that leaves the viewer with the impression that the wearer is using it as some sort of retro-prop to actively draw attention.

is this suit too southern? this question may only be applicable to americans, but all opinions are welcome. all of my use of it would be in new england. would you view this suit as a freakish anomoly, or a charming anomoly?

shoes, specifically: those white suede bucks with the salmon-y foam sole. is this overkill? if so, can you suggest any shoes that might work.

am i too young for this suit? i'm thin, 24, white, and 5'7". does this suit demand more presence than my years afford me?

any opinions welcome... thanks.
