It may be lyrically offensive, but I think I can forgive it for just how wretchedly catchy and upbeat it is. I'm sure it'll be annoying three months from now when it's the only song on the radio, but for now I'm going to go with it.

I saw her talking about the song on Sky News earlier today and she tries to explain the lyrical nonsense by saying that "punk rockers and hippies" (her words, not mine) were both very anti-establishment and so, in fact, her lyrics are the most cleverest ever! Watertight, Sandi. Watertight.

Also interesting to note, the reason that she was given a record contract, is because she was apparently huge on the internet. She had online concerts and was mostly self advertising for quite some time.

Wow. Prince as E'd-up intersex Jesus. Er, he does realise, as a Jehovah's Watchtower whatever-ist, that he's basically describing himself as Jesus... ?

there's one that has bugged me for a while; I just caught the end of it on tape from the radio... there's like a weird casio noise, and the tune is stretched over 2 bars that keep repeating, the chords might be Am, E, C, Dm, and then right at the end, the (american) singer says 'that's real good' and then u can just hear the drums, and the bass going A A A A, D D D D- a bit like the intro to 'scooby snacks' by FLC... I reckon it's about 80 BPM... overall, it's got a kind of spooky feel; the notes to the tune are approximately a c f a g# f g f eflat f c... more I couldn't say...

free mint aero to anyone who gets this one!

I don't normally get into songs from adverts, but the song on the Sony advert with the colored balls falling down a street and its parody on a drink advert is lovely. What is it praytell and who is the sensitive soul singing it so sweetly?

Regrettable Juvenilia

The song is 'Heartbeats', originally by The Knife (and their version is still the definitive one), but the version in the advert is by Jose Gonzales - previous discussion of his version here.

A song I heard probably about 7-10 years ago, which explains why I can only remember a bit about it.
very mellow voice male singer and the only part I can recall goes "Its not the world, its not this place, its the people" or something like that

this is a yousendit of an instrumental rock song.

Who did this and what is it called?

Umm. That's not an instrumental, chief. The vocals come in at about the 2:00 mark, and a quick Google on the words reveals that the song is "Knights of Cydonia," by Muse.

Seriously.

Guy sounds a little like Bono, don't he?

Okay, so I'm listening to the radio last night. There's this song that comes on. The whole song is 2 kids (adults run through some filter, most likely) talking. There is background music that is accordian and guitar. We find out that the 2 kids are trapped somewhere, so they yell for help at some adults they see, but nobody hears them. Then we discover that they are on a bridge and they yell for help again. Finally, they decide to jump. We're not sure if they die or live, but either way, they let us know that they are in a cold, dark place.
This was one of the weirdest songs I've ever heard. I couldn't write down who they said it was, but I want to say that the band has the word "Lady" in it. Any thoughts? This song is truly awesome.

Sorry, chaated, I have no idea; although it sounds intriguing, so if you do find out who it is, will you let me know?

(I've got a weird feeling I might have posted about the following mystery song somewhere on Barbelith before* , so please forgive me if I have.)

A recent exchange with Kali in another music thread (here) reminded me of a song I've been after for ages, ever since I heard it on the radio a few years ago. It's basically a kind of spoof of Barry White (although it might be the Love Walrus himself), and I assume it's called 'Trouble' or 'Big Trouble'. It's actually a decent tune and quite a funky and funny song (IMHO). One of the verses goes something like this:

I felt so cool and carefree
I decided to take of all my clothes
and drive, downtown
What - was - I - thinking?

(chorus)

And now I'm trouble
Big, big trouble

Does anybody have any info on this song, or better yet an MP3 they could send me?

In the early 80's my sister had a mix tape, made by a DJ in Trollhattan, Sweden. There was a song on that tape that I quite enjoyed. The chorus was something like:

Could it be a Bat?
No... It's just an illusion

Years later I meet this street performer in Germany, a guy from Venice Beach, said he was on Star Search, he used the same song to break dance to.

Any clue? Anyone?

With a title like that, it´s no wonder you never found that song.

chaated, nice one. I'll definitely try and get a copy (somehow). You've pricked my curiosity.

33, what style of song was it? Rock, Noise, House,...? Might help if you try a more detailed description. (no snark, just sayin')

Erm...Anyone know that Barry White-type tune I was on about (me impatient!)? I've got the chorus on replay in my head loads lately, and I need to hear it to put myself out of my misery. If it helps, I think I heard it on Ross Allen's Capital FM radio show a few years ago.

Help me out here:

A very synth-pop '80s song that was on a mix tape a friend made me. I never COULD find the actual group or album, as he moved away after the tape was made.

It was a synthpop version of Peter and the Wolf, with a John Hurt-ish narrator.

The chorus included the lyrics

I was running / as fast as I could
I was screaming / take me far from these woods!

and there's a bit where the narrator says "the hunters came out of the woods" and there's a breakdown with drums and a people shouting "oogah!" type noises.

Any ideas?

sorry Mattshephard can't help with your enquiry,

but I have one of my own that'll be easy peasy to all the musical encyclopedias in these parts. Can you tell me the artist and title track of the song with the belting chorus,

"and I shouted,
IT SHOULDA BEEN ME,
IT SHOULDA BEEN ME,
how could you do this to me..."

I've googled and poked around but am only getting recent hits with 'shoulda' in them, this is an old standard I think and probable been covered by lots of people.

Much obliged an all if you can help.

Gladys Knight and the Pips have a song called "It should have been me".

The lyrics:

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME
Gladys Knight & The Pips

I saw my love walking down the aisle
And as he passed me by
He turned and gave me a smile
Then, the preacher, then the preacher
The preacher joined their hands
And all the people, all the people began to stand
When I shouted, "you know it should have been me"
(Instead of her walking with you)

You are leaving me stranded
You know that it should have been me baby
Oh baby gettin' ready to marry you
Darlin' darlin' darlin'
You made a promise that we would never part
Then you turned around and broke my little heart
Now you're standing there saying I do
Holding hands with somebody new
You know that it should have been me
(I can't stand it)
Instead of her standing by you
You know that it should have been me
It should have been me
(Baby don't do it)
Then the preacher oh yeah the preacher asked
That there be silence please

If anybody objects to this wedding
Speak now or forever or forever hold your peace
Thin I shouted, "It should have been me"
You know that it should have been me
Don't you know that it should have been me
You know that it should have been me
I've been faithful to you baby, baby, baby
You were leaving me stranded

Any help?

Indeed it is, how kind of you to post it.and what a tirade it is.
The lyrics popped into my head when I was thinking about a thwarted design scheme, it'll never see the light of day now poor little lamb, and you've quenched my info-thirst.

Around 1980-1982 I was walking around the area called The Mumbles, in Swansea, with a cassette recorder, just being creative and stuff as an enterprising little child. After recording the splash of rocks in water, waves and so on, I recorded some sounds from a video game arcade on the pier.

Within that brief section of the tape is an even briefer snatch of what must have been a pop song of the time. Its lyric, I remember a quarter of a century later, went like this:

In the middle of Manhattan, there's a park

Googling this lyric matches NO pages.

I'm only posting this up as a kind of cosmic challenge, because I think it's perhaps the toughest "name this song" with a genuine answer (somewhere) you could come up with. That snatch of music has been lodged in my head for so long, and I've never had any clue what it was.

I'm bored at work. So:

The park in the middle of Manhattan is Central Park. Assuming that this is the first line of the song, it may well be a song ABOUT Central Park. Going out on a limb, there's a Paul Hardcastle song on AllMusic called "Central Park" from 1981, and he certainly fits the light pop formula.

Hardcastle's biography on Trippin N Rhythm Records shows that he got significant play in the UK around '83.

But... Mac OS X and AllMusic hate each other, so I can't listen to the sample. No joy on lyric searches either. So there's my shot in the dark. Good luck!

You could try Manu Chao.

I'd also previously thought Al-di Meda was a Spanish guitarist, but my web-fu is letting me down as I've been trying to confirm this. Indeed, there's hardly any mention of Al-di Meda at all on the Interweb (as far as I can tell). However, Al-di Meda (whoever ze is) plays beautiful Spanish/Latin guitar.

The Orchestra del Sol are also worth a listen, as their music base is fairly (erm?) broad Folk music, encompassing many cultures from around the globe.

Otherwise, I recommend you go to a large music chain store and look in their classical and world music sections, for more tips.

Hope that helps.

Paco De Lucia is worth a listen if you're looking for more traditional spanish music. His flamenco guitar is impeccable and if you can find any of his guitar duet or trio recordings they may well blow your socks off.

I find Manu Chao wear thin after anything more than two songs in a row. My comprehension of Spanish is pretty much limited to knowing that they occasionaly mention weed which probably doesn't help my appreciation.

Can you give me a description of instrumentation, melody, speed, "feel" or something?

Chirpy pop. Not 80s mainstream: I would say more retro 60s-70s. Kind of like The Byrds. Presumably American. One male vocal. I honestly only heard one line, but I'd say guitar-based.

I just sang the line as I recall it, and it lasted 4 seconds.

It's hopeless I know! but still, an interesting exercise.
