Welcome to the House of Spin...

A register of the best misrepresentations and outright whoppers.

My favourite so far today:

"Diplomacy has failed."

No, it hasn't. Diplomacy has succesfully established that the international community is by and large not in favour of war. The fact that Tony and George don't like this result does not make it invalid.

Just wanted to say that this is one of the best ideas for threads I've ever seen. Keep 'em coming, I'll add some myself when I have the time.

how about the official Israeli party line on running over a peace protestor twice with a bulldozer:

"We are dealing with a group of protesters who are acting very irresponsibly."

i suppose it would be more responsible to allow the IDF to continue to bury civilians within the ruins of their homes?

My fave so far is the 'Its all Frances fault' attitude. The super-flu is also happening at an interesting time. Is that the distant sound of the Four Horsemen approaching I hear? Scary times!

My personal favourite is 'shock and awe' - as in dropping 800 missiles in Baghdad in two days in order to 'shock and awe' the Iraqi population. Seems an especially pusillanimous turn of phrase, doesn't it?

Can't think of a specific quote but post-Bush's speech, the heaping of blame on France for their veto threat. Thus neatly obscuring the political failure on the part of the UK (and US) to gain enough votes anyway.

I would say his assertion that "everything possible has been done to avoid war" in tonight's speech is a big fat porky pie.

There was a giant headline on the Herald-Sun front page (Murdock owned Melbourne paper)where Mr Howard declared that this was "Our War". I wanted to vomit.

Just heard on the radio that "Mr Bush stressed that this was not a war against the ordinary Iraqi people. He also asked the military to lay down their arms."

that, like said before, the reason the latest resoluion was withdrawn was because the french threatened veto. forcing them to use veto would have been way to prove that statement, but obviously there weren't enough votes around the table. like newsnight said, five months of intensive diplomacy and the cowboys convinced.....bulgaria.

Not so much a lie as a grim irony. Part of the spin is that war will bring democracy to Iraq. The Security Council members who support war are democratic nations - in Spain 65% of Spaniards backed the Franco-Russian position as against 10% support for the US position; in Bulgaria less than 20% would have supported military action *even with* UN sanction, and in Britain a recent poll suggested 86% of people wanted more time for the inspectors. "Democracy is a beautiful thing."

Well, to be fair, it'll be the first time the UK has brought democracy to the region...
Unfortunately, it'll also be a capitalist setup, where only American corporations are invited to develop the infrastructure (aid agencies effectively being kept out of the loop).

Just seen a clip from Bush's speech on Sunday, something like

France has decided to use their veto to block any move that would hold Sadaam to account

No. Just a lie.

Watching Blair & Bush's respective latest pronouncements on the TV this morning, I couldn't help but be overcome by the image of their vastly audacious levels of hypocrisy and deception reaching Tower of Babel like proportions whilst all of history's other renowned deceivers sit around at the bottom saying "woah, those boys are really going for it. How long d'you reckon they've got before it collapses under it's own weight?"

The sheer "how do they sleep at night?" factor is just staggering.

Oh my god. not quite on topic but had to repeat this somewhere:

Watching Richard and Judy (aka The Mail On Telly) and Amanda Platell has just commented that "the French are well known for their ability to sell, but not for their bravery".

I know it's what I should expect but oh my god.

Thank god Bonnie Greer was on hand to bite her head off.

Lie of the week: 'The French' are all the same, and are constutionally cowards. and have 'let us down' etc etc.

A bit rich coming from a member of the 'nation of shopkeepers' don't you think? Jesus. Mind you, she was William Hague's spin doctor, so I suppose we shouldn't expect anything other than staggering ineptitude - apart perhaps from offensive xenophobia...

Maybe not a lie, but just an evil quote from an article in 'The Spectator' by Mark Steyn:

Just for the record, if you’re reading this in an obscure corner of the jungle, not only did the 20th century not belong to Canada; the decayed Dominion will be very lucky to make it through the 21st at all: I doubt it’ll get past 2025 with its present borders intact.

Oh, piss off.

Kat, I know that she's going to say stuff like this, given who she is.

But,she attempted to defend herself against Bonnie Greer's outrage (rah!)by going on about collaborators. I'm chalking this one down to vile xenophobia/racism over ineptitude.

A United States defence official has said moves to ban depleted uranium ammunition are just an attempt by America's enemies to blunt its military might.

Colonel James Naughton of US Army Materiel Command said Iraqi complaints about depleted uranium (DU) shells had no medical basis.
"They want it to go away because we kicked the crap out of them," he told a Pentagon briefing.

"They are putting everyone in danger, the Palestinians, themselves, our forces, by intentionally placing themselves in a combat zone".

That's right! International Solidarity Movement members may get their bodyparts caught in tank tracks which may cause them to loose control and crash into Palestians and kill them whole hours before they wer emeant to die, making all the schedules a complete mess, and the drivers may bang their head on something in the process.

Damn their squishy human flesh.

"And let me remind the American people that this war is the last resort. The United States pursued every other option."

Bengali: Oooh, before I forget, Rumsfeld's "This is not a unilateral action" was actually even better. He said something like "This is not, as has been reported in the media, unilateral action."

He managed to give credence to the idea whilst denying it. Priceless, I thought.

And Myers was with him. He's even better at handling the media than Rummy...
