Having died both very violently and very quickly in the last two games I have come to the conclusion that the only way to cheat death is to host the next game.

As the fair people of Granton have just lynched another innocent villager, and assuming my calculations aren't far wrong, the current game is now drawing to a close, so who would be up for a new round after the current one finishes?

I would, because I really, really sucked as a player.

Lolita Nation had the awesome idea of setting the game in High School, with bitchy cliques, the chess club, etc. with everyone playing in character as a student.

I have a little something other than the usual townsfolk scenario planned...

It's interesting how online it slides easier into a role-playing game, when it's really not.

Hmm.

Fun, though.

I'd play again.

Y'all. I would be a fearsome principal. SERIOUSLY!

But Tez definitely deserves the first go.

I should also mention that I'd be really interested in a variation with two Mafia, two detectives and a Fink.

Just to mix things up.

High school would be a HELL of a lot of fun, but I think I'm tuckered out. Grab me if you need someone to round out the group, like poor Flyboy did, but otherwise I'll be in the darkroom, huffing silver chloride.

I say Japanese village themed. The Detectives are samurai, the fink is a Ronin and the Mafia are NINJA!

I'd like to have a stab at it. Literally. Please count me in.

I'm up for it, despite having been instrumental in the lynching of far too many innocents recently...

If there's any more room in the inn I'd love to have a, ahem, stab at it (if you can stand all the durned puns that is). The other two games looked insanely tense and engaging.

Agh. Not only did I use a shit pun, I also failed to note its previous usage. Bollocks. I'm off to the garden to eat worms.

So we're all situated in a stereotypical All-American High School where our peers tend to die mysteriously in the middle of the night and we spend out days slaying anything we think is evil, right? Can I bagsie being Willow?

I want to see what Tez's idea is though....

Mafia 3 is set in 1926 aboard the sun-drenched luxury liner, SS Substandard, bound for the tourist paradise that is Catlipoca (one of the Caribbean's newest banana republics). Think white suits, think outraged aunts and quixotic gentlemen, think eighty degrees in the shade, free drinks, and amateur sleuths arguing over who gets to see the body first. Think Aztec art and long cigarette holders. Think gramophone hits and casino tables. Well, you get the idea...

My current plan as far as the group makeup goes is as follows:

2 Mafia
10 Passengers/Ship Workers (whichever role you fancy slipping into)
2 Detectives
1 Vengeful ex-partner of both of the above (this is the Fink part Grant mentioned, whose job it is seek revenge on both their ex spouses by revealing them to the mafia).

Whilst I'm happy ditching the doctor role, as it doesn't seem to have served us particularly well in the last game, the addition of the Fink part is something I want to throw open to people's approval or disapproval. I personally like the idea, and think it will make for a much more entertaining game, but am happy to ditch it if I'm in the minority.

I think the mafia have enough of an advantage as it is without chucking the fink into the mix. You either need a doctor or a third detective to balance it out.

As I said earlier, because we're online it's really hard to spot when people are lying and if the mafia are careful not to vote as too much of a bloc it's virtually impossible for the villagers to pick them out. IRL I think the villagers have much more of a chance, but seeing as we're online we need to account for this and bias the game more towards the villagers than would ordinarily be advisable.

And, btw, I still think a Barbelith IRL mafia meet is a top idea, especially if it involves recreational drugs and arguments over the stereo...

Well, with two Mafia, it seems to balance out the advantage. Hard to say.

I'm also curious about the idea of the Masons, from the Princeton page. They're a group of citizens who know each other are innocent.

oops - didn't notice there were only two mafia.

Since we've not played with the Fink character, it's impossible to be absolutely certain how it will work, but it does seem that said character could work just as well against the mafia as for (albeit unwittingly). Remember it's entirely up to the Fink how they use their information, so they might well swing lynchings away from innocent villagers they've inquired about in trying to trace the detectives.

Any more thoughts on the Fink, anyone?

I'd most definitely be up for it also, seeing how I have secured the deaths of many innocents in the last round. It was fun.

I expect Mob money by noon, tomorrow.

So far I count the following as up for a third round after the current has finished:

Todd
Bengali In Platforms

lolita nation
Nietzsch E. Coyote (Canus Lupus Deicidus)
Biz:"Run you stupid pigeons, it's Armin Tamzarian!"
rat
Orr we're doomed, Captain
Season 3 Flyboy (was so much more likeable)
~~~B C~~~
That's 10. 5 more should about do it.
Tez, I don't think I actually can play this time, I'm really busy at school. Maybe I'll do the High School thing sometime later. I think the cruise ship idea rules by the way! It reminds me of that David Foster Wallace essay. I think brotherjerry is in for sure though.
I'm not sure, hon. Wasn't really prepared for how much time is needed, and I'm going to hopefully be a bit busier with work than I have been.
will have a think.. *love* the scenario, though
Byron - I'd be def. up for a RL version... as long as there's no lynching-retaliation-subtext.... Byron lures the hapless Stoatie, Whisky and BiP to a lonely warehouse etc. etc.
If a detective asks about a person and they are the fink, what will the detective be told about the fink?
Nuthin'. All they know is Mafia? : Yes/No
Nietzsch E. Coyote
20:52 / 11.03.03
So this could lead the detective to reveal himself to an innocent only to have it be the fink who kills him? yay.
Tezcatlipoca
20:52 / 11.03.03
Okay, dropping BiP and lolita makes 8 players so far. And yes, a detective investigating the Fink will only be told that he/she is not mafia.
Nietzsch E. Coyote
21:06 / 11.03.03
That totally weakens the position of the Detectives in the game. There are only two things that the detectives can do in the game one is identify the guilty, without a doctor this would have to be awfully subtle as to fully reveal himself would mean his death. The second thing would be to network among the known innocents. This would also lead to a safer way of revealing who in fact the mafia are. If one of those "innocents" is the fink they would know who the detective is and who the mafia to tell is. The detectives are screwed.
