Threadrot about how unrecognizedly cool Staten Island is:

SI also has an enormous abandoned airfield, right? Part of the harbor defense system from WWII, along with "closed" bases for nuclear submarines (I've been out in the harbor in the middle of the night with sonar on, looking for bluefish, and seen really big, um, sharks or something near SI and Perth Amboy). SI includes one of the oldest original freeholds in the US, a farm built by some crazy Dutchman before the incorporation of the city, totally unrestored -- just a crumbling clapboard shack and an overgrown field. SI is also, I believe, where Aaron Burr died and is buried (he shot Alexander Hamilton to death in a duel on the Palisades in New Jersey), not to mention the birthplace of American Wu Tang.

And lots of places with names like Fresh Kills.

But I'm not leaving mizzy-hizzy just to go to a graveyard.

Okay, let's meet up today (Thursday the 20th) at Times Square. 5pm.

no offence but what kind of idea is "let's meet today..."?

i kinda hope you were being sarcastic and only suggesting because of the anti-invasion rallying going on.

one week advance notice would be best i'm sure.

Okay, so what's the plan?

Caleigh
14:02 / 30.04.03
To initiate this whole idea of NYC BARBE-meet let me propose

Saturday May 10th Noon at the Museum of Folk Art

http://www.folkartmuseum.org

Wolfli, though a incarcerated child molester was also an incredibly prolific and creative artist who did not only paintings and drawings but composed music.

I will be there at noon and will wait until 12:30 in front of the building for any who would like to meet up. I'm 5'10", have dark brown hair and am slim.

pushes on a larger boulder and thinks maybe it's budging but isn't sure

I really, really want to see this - I saw the Darger exhibit there last year, and this one is supposed to be spectacular, too. And this is closing on the 18th, je crois.

There's an excellent article in the New Yorker about it

Only thing is, I'm taking a class on Saturday afternoons, so I'd have to be down at Union Square by 1:30, which wouldn't give me enough time to see the exhibit.

Maybe I can show up earlier and meet you inside or something. I'll let you know if I'm going.

just keeping this in the top three so it can be seen from main list

I probably won't be sick by that time so I'm up for it unless some other plans interfere.

"i won't be sick by that time.."

Are you planning on getting sick or you can anticipate your illnesses a week ahead of time Lionheart? Can you teach that to me?

Lionheart
17:47 / 05.05.03
No, no, no, you misunderstand. I'm already sick.

Caleigh
04:59 / 06.05.03
oh, duh me, then i hope you get well and can come for saturday.

Caleigh
03:00 / 07.05.03

Tragically, I have a prior commitment, which I'll just go ahead and plug.

The Sex Slaves (www.sexslavesnyc.com) are playing at Arlene's Grocery, at noon.

Noon?

Caleigh
15:10 / 07.05.03
This coming Saturday May 10th @ Noon

The American Folk Art Museum, 45 W 53rd Street

Barbelites can gather at outdoor entrance to meet-up.

What can I say, I'm newish to NYC, I'm going to go to the show regardless if anyone shows up but I thought it would be a really good show for us to meet up at. It's supposed to be a great show and what interests me most personally is his musical work.

Caleigh
15:12 / 07.05.03
actually, if we can get an RSVP thing going I'm now into changing the time to 2pm instead. I don't have to be at work until 6pm.

Keep it at noon, I think. Since I have to spend from 1:30 to 5 staring at a naked guy in Union Square, I'm going to try and go earlier (11ish) see the exhibit, meet you people, then bolt for my class.

wouldn't it be very barbelithic to see the mathew barney show at the guggenheim sometime soon?

Caleigh

a small but determined group of barbes met at noon(ish) at the folk art museum and were inspired and impressed by the obsessive work of Adolf Wofli.

i already saw the Barney thing a while ago with my parents when they were visiting but think it's very worthwhile.
