Threadrot about how unrecognizedly cool Staten Island is:
SI also has an enormous abandoned airfield, right? Part of the harbor defense system from WWII, along with "closed" bases for nuclear submarines (I've been out in the harbor in the middle of the night with sonar on, looking for bluefish, and seen really big, um, sharks or something near SI and Perth Amboy). SI includes one of the oldest original freeholds in the US, a farm built by some crazy Dutchman before the incorporation of the city, totally unrestored -- just a crumbling clapboard shack and an overgrown field. SI is also, I believe, where Aaron Burr died and is buried (he shot Alexander Hamilton to death in a duel on the Palisades in New Jersey), not to mention the birthplace of American Wu Tang. |
