Was there ever a plan to make moderators elected or give them limited terms? I seem to recall it was rejected as putting too much organisational strain on Tom, and due to the shortage of regulars on some fora (who would be the 48 people to moderate Art, Fashion and Design this year, for example?).
Moderatros have little power, can only act cooperatively, and as such I think abuse of power is fairly unlikely. At times I have seen incidents of moderators behaving very badly indeed in their own fora, but that's a different matter, and one probably only solvable by appeal to higher authorities; stripping somebody of Mod duties strikes me as a pretty big step, and if actual moderator powers are not being abused I'm not sure that their behaviour is subject to anything other than moral compulsion.
If, on the other hand, somebody doesn't post for, say, a month or two, there is an argument for fidning a replacement moderator, to avoid situations where, for example in Conversation, we are basically relying on the presence of the administrators because only a couple of the moderators are online with any regularity. |
