I shocked there's no thred on this already...

Cover by Frank Quietly... VERY NICE.

Interesting twists turns... am I the only one who's getting a twilight Zone gone britney spears with this story line?

You are joking about the cover? Right? That is the worst cover this series yet. Quietly's ugly way of drawing people is really showed up when compared to Allred, here's hoping he never gets a fill in on this book.
As for the issue, this is my fav book, it rips along at a rate of knots.
Arnie as an X - statix member, both Phat and Miles gay, when Milligan is on form there's no one else like him.

While obviously Rushed... I still liked the stranged synergy of Quietly's Pencils under Alred's inks... sort of Kirbyesque!?!? or just plain weird...

So is Arnie the new leader of this team now?

A very satisfying conclusion to this story line. I was going to give up on this comic after issue 2 - I couldn't remember what was happening from issue to issue - but then 3 reminded me and I'm glad I didn't.

I'm okay with the X-statix name now, but what really was the reason for the change? Whose idea was that? I have to say I really liked the name and logo for X-Force better than this, though the Giant Size X-Statix cover was fantastic.

So, after reading this and Vertigo London thing, I went out and bought 5 issues of Shade. Very enjoyable, I had always imagined it much more difficult to read from what friends had told me. I'll hunt down more I'm sure. Any other Milligan suggestions?

If you can find 2000ad from about 470-500 I think you'll find some of his finest work:

Yeah, obviously that was a joke, unc...we all HATE Quitely round here. So much.

surely the joke is that quitely could ever find time to do a fill in on a book that has pretty consistently kept to its monthly schedule?

What I particularly love about the end of this issue is the way that you don't know exactly what Guy's motives are for letting Arnie join the team: on the one hand, maybe he's genuinely scared after that threat; on the other hand Guy may know his weakness, plus maybe he thinks joining X-Statix could be Arnie's first step towards rehabilitation; then again, maybe he just wants someone to talk to about Edie some more...

Sarcasm's very hard to read, you know. Some people don't like Quitely.

As for my amusement, see post below. Good.

Anyway, Arnie is such a painfully brilliant character: the fanboy who dictates events. While many complain about 'comics about comics', this is really digging to the gnarly roots of what dem superheroes is. It's wonderful - Allred's perfect, and the melodrama gushes at toxically high (and thus, brilliant) levels.

Urgh.

Well there was no sarcasm about Quitely. His layouts and backgrounds are some of the best in the business but god damn it his people are terrible. Look at the invisibles 3 #1. Horrible.
His work on the authority was even worse.
As for my fear of him filling in on X-statics, imagine, a huge jawed Orphan, lumpy headed Dead Girl and I fear for Doop.
Burr.
But enough of this J'acuse stuff, this book fuckin' rocks dude!

The Natural Way

But the point has to be made that most of us would really enjoy Quitely filling in for an issue. We've heard all yr ugly head talk before......

Yeah, that’s it dunkers: Arnie is the fanboy who writes in to creators, letter columns etc and demands that this that and the other is done in order to save his favourite comic book from going awry.

That peculiar relationship between audience and creator (which is perhaps unique to comics) is beautifully explored by Milligan in the X-statix 1 to 4.

Of course Arnie wouldn’t kill Guy – he probably really wants to see Guy and Edie back together like every good fanboy would (despite being in love with Edie himself)

And yknow, I actually believed for a few pages that Arnie was being packed off to anonymity.

Guy is turning out to be a real fave of mine.

Jeez – the whole team are!

So...after Arnie fucks off....the Horn?

I want the Horn - think he'll soon become my fave.

The Falcon
13:09 / 12.11.02
Whuzz the Horn, runxy?

I like Quitely squashed heads. I want a New X-Men/X-Statix crossover so bad I could pee.

I love Guy; the (supposed) comic reader's idealised version of self, I think. Sometimes he's a real tit, though. The only team member getting a bit tired is Phat; jokey name an' all.

One further complaint: 4 issues, 0 team members dead.

The Strobe
13:52 / 12.11.02
Oh yes. This ties a lot of things neatly together, mainly through the huge dialogue-in-fight sequence; I think "Stop being so melodramatic. We're in a pastiche of a zombie movie, not some prepubescent soap" wins as line-of-the-issue... but there's lots of little stuff going on there. The O-Force as Ex-Force, line, for a start (they're modelled on the old, failed incarnation, not the new successful one).

Not much else constructive to say. But I really like this book. A lot.

Because no one's explained to me how to post images in a way I understand (being shit and all), here's a link to the horned one:

Not a very good image, I'm afraid. Check the trade.

The Falcon
01:15 / 13.11.02
Yep. He looks cool. Allred creates brilliant post-Kirby characters.

Frequently.

Vivisector is kind of a 4th wall-buster ('the role of fiction in a fictive world') and a necessary component of the team, I reckon. I'll be pretty miffed if (when) he bites it.

Or is that too predictable now? Where is this comic going?

I dunno, but I like it.

Got to agree with Uncle. What a terrible cover, and Quitely would be all wrong for this book; X-Statix would highlight all of his limitations, prunish heads and all.

This one felt really rushed, though the trade-off is that there's a lot crammed into it. Maybe I missed something, but Solomon's transformation into drunken pathetic mutant was abrupt as was Ginsberg's revelation. Seems like the whole ting could have worked as two issues, but hell, it's supposed to be fast-paced, yes?

I am not trusting anything just yet. Let's not forget this is a five part storyline. Phat's parents are still trailer-trash, so I would say we should not put too much stock in any (possibly Arnie-influenced) occurrences w/in the book. Status-quo might be quite different by end of next issue.

status quo is always the same. (cept for that song - ow we oh you're in the army now - what was that all about?)

video: good point about solomon - was a bit disappointed with his capitulation. But I've a feeling it's not over.

Then again, Milligan has been lazy with some of his finest ceations before.

Envelope Girl in Enigma for one.

Well, it was a five-parter as of issue 3 ("Part 3 of 5!!!"), but these things do sometimes change, as we know.

>>>Quitely would be all wrong for this book; X-Statix would highlight all of his limitations<<<

Aside from the obvious speed issue, I'm curious what you would perceive as Quitely's "limitations." His storytelling skills, not just in composition but in acting, setting, and overall "flow" are simply superb, among the very best in the business. He clearly and elegantly pulls off scenes that would give me conniptions if I had to think about staging them.

Yes, he doesn't draw bee-yoo-tee-ful people. SO FUCKING WHAT??

Um, don't get yer panites in a bunch, there, Cam.

I suppose I should rephrase. No, I don't think Quitely's art is very attarctive, but it can be very elegant, certainly. Mainly, I don't dig it, no more than that. The angles he chooses very often seem forced to me, particularly when he goes isometric, as in the case of the cover in question.

In reference to this book, I don't think he would be able to hit the tone that Allred manages. Quitely is too severe - he's as unable to pull out of the severity and do 'pop' as Allred is to do the reverse. (Though that's not exactly true - I've seen Allred go very severe and have it work, often because of the conflict between line and tone.) Or if that's not the case, I've never seen him nail it. Allred's look, or something like it, is exactly what this book needs, and I think Quitely's art would take Milligan's melodrama too seriously.

Sorry, I'm just sick of seeing people say that Quitely sucks with (usually) no further justification than "his faces are ugly," while far inferior artists get praise heaped upon them because their work is superficially "pretty."

It...it...it gets my panties in a bunch, so it does.

I held three original Quitely X-Men pages in my hands today. Staggering.

Matthew Fluxington
03:23 / 16.11.02
I seriously cannot comprehend why some of you think the cover is bad - it's fine, it looks good, and it's way more Allred than it is Quitely by appearance. The only thing about it that makes it look even vaguely Quitely-like is the eyes on Edie. That's it. It's a hell of a lot better than the cover for X-Statix #2, that's for sure.

I agree that the story felt a bit rushed - in addition to the bits already mentioned about O'Sullivan and Ginsberg, the scene in which Myles and Phat neatly explain how they've made a clear decision about their sexuality off-panel did not sit well with me. That seems very rushed to me, and I feel cheated that we didn't get to see those conversations on-panel while we've got a few too many pages of zombie battles instead.

03:25 / 16.11.02
By the way, I think Frank Quitely draws excellent people 98% of the time. Y'all are insane. Would you prefer a fucking Kubert brother? Would that satisfy you?

Murray Hamhandler
16:46 / 16.11.02
You have no idea how much that would satisfy me. I'm a masochist, I am...

Wait for the conclusion. Again, I don't think that any resolutions are pat. Arnie has his fingers in many pies, I would imagine. The real (read: unmanipulated) lives of the 'Statix may be slightly different than we've been lead to believe...

Or I could be talking out of my ass.

generally, the covers to x force/statix have been the least good aspects of this otherwise fine comic.

I reckon.

And vid: I'm with you bout Quitely on this title. He WOULD bring a severity which would not sit well with Miligan's pop brilliance.

That said, he can do comedy: you should see 'The Greens', a strip he wrote and illutrated for a Glasgow fanzine.

As for his angles: can't agree: he's the current boss of spatial representation in 2 dimensions as faras I'm concerned.

mind you, yon seth fischer's pretty good too.
