"Afro-Caribbean" is a term I've run into around here, but it strikes me as odd, if I think about it. "Caribbean" actually refers to the Carib Indians. They're long gone, if I recall. Odd.
While 'Caribbean' does relate to the Caribs it's more common usage is:
"Of or relating to the Caribbean Sea, its islands, or its Central or South American coasts or to the peoples or cultures of this region."
so in a really weird sort of way, Afro-Caribbean does relate to the 'land'. When people in North America use the term 'Afro-Caribbean' to relate to spiritual practice it's usually either lazy usage or to differentiate the Catholic syncretizations from the 'pure' Dahomean or Yoruban religions still practiced in those regions of Africa. It's also less religiously charged then "New Orleans Voudoun", "Florida Santeria", "San Franciscan Palo Mayombe" etc. |
