Hahah! I went! It was good!
FRAELY'S TOP FOUR:
1. The Magic Band. Being near obsessive about Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band this was the biggest thrill for me. A bunch of ageing musicians finally getting their chance to bathe in the limelight that had previously been trained on the tyranical Captain. Gary 'Mantis' Lucas was particularly guilty of pulling ridiculous guitar faces and poses. There was a touch of Vegas about their showmanship which I just loved against the backdrop of droney laptops and widdly turntables that comprised much of the festival. The music was rocking good. Smiled so hard I damn near cracked my chin.

2.The Fall. Never seen them before. Heared Mark E. Smith could be a bit temperamental but he must have been having a good day. Head down rockin' goodness.

3.Venetian Snares. His music made sense played loud betwween 3.30 and 5.00 on a Monday morning. This music really throws down the gauntlet to all those who reckon they like a bit of a rave. VSnares would have beaten everyone if it weren't for his MC. She was a cool looking girl from London who jumped up and down a lot whilst shouting "Last chance to dance!". I damn near broke my dancing bone.

4.Sun 0))). Never heared of them. Walked in halfway through their set. "Sounds like boring drone music" I thought. As I drew closer I saw what was making the noise; two people dressed in hooded white robes with guitars feeding back so they sustain infinately. One chord would last for maybe a minute, then a different one would come grinding in and last for another minute or so. This was distilled essence of rock.

OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST:
Thirsten Howl III referring to the audience as "London" as in "We love you, London!" and "Make some motherfuckin' noise, London!".
Public Enemy similarly refering to the audience as "Camber Sands!". Thankfully none of the rappists refered to the audience as "Pontins Holliday Camp!"
The swimming pool was nice.
Aphex Twin played a sort of retrospective of raving good music, starting with hardcore, moving on through drum and bass, techno and finally head banging gabber. Quite a straight up DJ set compared with some of his more antisocial outings.
Drexian DJ Stingray playing really tough Detroit techno was good. He wore a balaclava.
Lots of electronica which I've sort of had my fill of recently.
Really nicely designed programs.
Crates of Hoegarden beer.
Mushrooms.
Nice good fun.

I recorded Venetian Snares set off the radio last night, and it was sweet! (if a bit frightening in places - i love his habit of making glitch-tronica with the same kind of spirit behind it as Black Metal..)

Yep, scary and funny in its ridiculousness. Shame they didn't broadcast the first half with the crazy outsider MCing. Also they didn't play the encore which rattled and pounded into a wall of extatic noise. But still "sweet" if that's the right word for it.

It was raving full-circle for Fraely. We went to our first weekender together at the same venue in 91.

We were "on" the atmosphere. Drugs are bad and unmarriage, mmmkar?

Pontins seemed much smaller as a 27 year old than as a 15 year old. The place hasn't changed, though. Either side of the stage in large colourful letters:
"PONTINS the party for kids"
More incongruous now than then.
