Er, disturbingly, I've not heard of probably the majority of those artists, but still .. Aphex? Cannibal Ox? El-P? Mira Calix? The Fall? Jim O'Rourke? Should be good! (If more beardy than, um, a big bag full of beards)..

Oh, and 'The Magic Band' .. is that Captain beefheart's pals going on the road without him? Scary..

Want. Go. Want. Go. Someone come with me. Want. Go.

Goodness Gracious Meme

Looks pretty good, though obviously very heavy on the avant electro stuff.

I can't say I feel so envious this time because the US one in 2003 is in the NY area.

And Malkmus is currating.

I'm so, so, so looking foward to it.

Flux- I WILL FUCKING HARM YOU!!

I need a chalet with people! And what are the dates?!

Having had an absolutely wicked time last year (Kim Deal kissed my shoe, etc) - despite not having heard of most of the bands - I'm really up for the idea of going again. It's great fun if you share a chalet with as many people as possible (I think 7 is the maximum), and a Barbelith chalet sounds tempting... could be masses of fun. I will have to scrape the cash together but it's a worthy cause...

My ambition this year would be to talk El-P into beating up Aphex Twin. BEARD WAR!

Well I'm certainly up for going. I'll discuss it with my indie pals over the weekend, see if there's any interest..

It should be noted that:

Such is demand for the event that 5 and 8 berth chalets are already sold out and tickets are only available in blocks of 4 (£460 total) 6 (£690 total) and 7 (£805 total) So get your group together and book fast.

So let's try and sort something, huh?

Oh, and hey Flyboy, I would have should all those laptop wielders would have been as bitter as garlic to yer pop-loving consciousness.. (if Cex was on the bill I think they'd have the full set).

(another thought upon re-viewing the list: 'Earth' aren't the grunge/doom rock group of that name are they? that would be weird..)

Barbechalet! Barbecahlet! Please? Because otherwise I can't go...

Bastards.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease. I have about five friends who've heard of Aphex Twin, and they think he's "a bit weird". And the only contact any of them have ever had with The Fall was when our English teacher got all nostalgic about when Mark E. Smith played a whole gig with a big blog of spit on his jumper. I don't think they even knew he was talking about The Fall...

Well like I say, I'm down with it.

10:02 / 04.11.02
So that's two more. What happens if people want to go with their real frineds? Then where am I left?? I don't have real friends!! I'm not paying another £110 to bring a cuddley toy of Coco The Monkey to Camber sands with me. Ya fuck.

In case some of you hadn't noticed, The Magic Band is Captain Beefheart's magic band, and that's going to be something that you really shouldn't miss, it's a one off deal. Captain Beefheart won't be there because he's a recluse, but still. Come on. If yr there, see it.

Murray Hamhandler
15:07 / 07.11.02
Van Vliet coming out of retirement probably would've been enough for me to cross that big ol' pond, but the Magic Band alone isn't quite enough on their own. Although I'd definitely check them out if they play in the states.

10:43 / 08.11.02
I heard they're playing at the LA ATP too..

Sounds like one of those things that could either be really good or really bad .. raises questions like; will they be playing Beefheart material? will they completely suck without the Captain (who supposedly planned out every single note on Trout Mask Replica in advance)?

Oh, and, worth saying again - anyone else wish to join us in getting a Chalet? Time is rolling on an' stuff!

_pin
16:11 / 09.11.02
it's me! And Riz! We're men! Who wear nail varnish!

Please?

Seth
10:37 / 10.11.02
I'd love to go... I'll ask the Snapping Snapper if she'll pay up for me for Chrimbo.

07:57 / 15.11.02
Who will help the widow's son?

(Uh... someone take responsibility for this and everyone say they're gonna go and just do something? And no, it can't be me beacuse I don't have a credit card. Nur nur nah nur nur)

rizla mission
11:16 / 15.11.02
Well I guess we could get myself, pin, exp and fly as a four berth chalet if nobody else is interested..

..if you all say 'aye' and confirm I guess it's time to start talking money and trying to get tickets..

Regrettable Juvenilia
13:36 / 15.11.02
This is the problem - much as I'd like to see a couple of these people live (especially El-P), much as I enjoyed the whole she-bang last year, and much as I am pro-pop, not anti-beard, Rizla - I'm honestly not sure I can afford it. Or to be blunt, I certainly can't afford it right now: a friend who's probably going has offered to get me a ticket in the meantime but I'm not sure it's a good idea to be running up any more debts right now.

So maybe I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope that next year I have money and they get Le Tigre or someone to compere...

Seth
14:08 / 15.11.02
OK. I'm up for being the responsible adult who organises and handles the money stuff. Riz and Pin are in, I'll find the cash from somewhere, anyone else for our party?

Seth
19:14 / 18.11.02
Is this gonna happen? Cos I need to sort out the money soon if it is.

_pin
20:38 / 18.11.02
Is as far as I'm concerned.

Do I send you money now, before you order?

Holy Farkin' Shnit!! 2003 in Asbury Park!

Does-- does this mean that I can no longer consider my sweet central Jersey home a cultural wasteland? Oh, I bite my knuckles in anticipation...

Hey Flux, maybe I'll have those CD's I said I'd burn by then...maybe

Hmmmmm. Now all we need now is a lineup.

Matthew Fluxington
02:43 / 19.11.02
Lineup, shminup. The Jicks are playing!

Preston School will probably also be on hand.

ditto.

Seth
14:30 / 19.11.02
Yeah, I need the money asap. However, we need a fourth person to make up the numbers, don't we?

Seth
17:19 / 20.11.02
Come on, before I change my mind! There's lots I could be doing with this kind of money...

_pin
21:17 / 20.11.02
I ain't sending you no money until I can A: make the cheque out to Smoking Anal Crack Ltd. and B: I know there's a fourth person going.

Seth
14:12 / 24.11.02
So that's a "no" then?

_pin
20:50 / 24.11.02
My last post wasn't a no, but I really don't think I can make it no. So yes, this is, now, a no.

Sorry dude.

So, who went? How was it? I'm still looking around for reviews on the web, but the more input, the better. I'm also wondering if there's a list anywhere of what was played on the festival television station.

Regrettable Juvenilia

Some friends of mine went, and apparently my friend Aimee ended up delivering an anti-war speech on stage with Public Enemy, which beats my Kim Deal story from last year...

Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!
09:11 / 10.04.03
Yes, but I still want to hear the Kim Deal story! Maybe I should pay more attention.

cool!

(Apparently next year's ATP is being joint-curated by Mogwai, Shellac and Tortoise. I am so there. Surely it will be the biggest concentration of black-rimmed glasses, converse and furrowed brows in the histroy of the world.)
