I just started reading Sexual Personae, and I was wondering what people think about her. I think she is a brilliant stylist, if nothing else. I'm not sure what she is saying is startlingly original or just cannily packaged truisms. Her view of masculinity is a reversal of Freud's view of feminity as being defined by a lack; in this case, masculinity is defined by the lack of the ability to procreate. She sees this lack and the attendent insecurity (neurosis) as being the motivating factor behind all the great achievements of Western civ.
Obviously, there's a lot more going on in S.P. (dionysian v. appollonian sensibilities, rationalism as a strictly male construct). I'd love to hear anyone else's take on Paglia's work in these and other areas, or her media image. |
