I just started reading Sexual Personae, and I was wondering what people think about her. I think she is a brilliant stylist, if nothing else. I'm not sure what she is saying is startlingly original or just cannily packaged truisms. Her view of masculinity is a reversal of Freud's view of feminity as being defined by a lack; in this case, masculinity is defined by the lack of the ability to procreate. She sees this lack and the attendent insecurity (neurosis) as being the motivating factor behind all the great achievements of Western civ.

Obviously, there's a lot more going on in S.P. (dionysian v. appollonian sensibilities, rationalism as a strictly male construct). I'd love to hear anyone else's take on Paglia's work in these and other areas, or her media image.

Remember that SP was pretty much her first thing and her views have changed a great deal. She's now vastly more media conscious and sassy.

I love her, because I think she's a "real-life" radical - the kind of person who wouldn't baulk at picking up a hammer. But a lot of people do not.

From what I've read of her more recent work, mostly via her column (ended?) on Salon.com, she seems to have gotten kind of cranky and reactionary. None of the brilliance evident in the opening chapter of SP was apparent to me.

Get hold of one of her recent books. Probably offend you even more.

She's great though. She absolutely will not shut up and play nicely.

She was the one who said 'wearing a miniskirt in a rough area is like leaving your carkeys on the hood'. She was in the doghouse for about a year. And yet, however wrong it is for it to be true, there are areas where it is true - just as you wouldn't wear your Armani suit and carry a briefcase and not expect trouble...

As I said. Real life, warts 'n' all.
