OPB Morocco Mole : "...that claim of responsibility coming not from some spokesman but one of those ubiquitous tapes intended for the illiterate masses of Afghanistan, says that pretty clearly."

This would, of course, be a different Afghanistan to the one where televisions were banned up until recently under strict readings of Islamic law, I suppose. Worrying to think that there are two Afghanistans, or that terrorists can decode video cassettes just from magnetic tape, eh?

My personal view on all this is that, like McVeigh, this is a cracked veteran who is turning on his country. I've heard it said that the possibility that this is a Viet vet being put around, but I keep asking myself; which veteran would be most wanting to make a point in the current political climate?

Perhaps someone wanting to say something about a second Gulf war?

Excuse my ever so cynical mind, but isn't this pushing it a bit? Is America now going to blame all its ills on terrorism? Drive-by shootings are hardly new.

I think you're reading the WorldNetDaily article as if it were a response to current events, but it's actually dated September 4th. Neither paranoia nor propaganda - just evidence that Al-Qaida at one point considered attacks similar to the ones now taking place.

Yes and no - I've heard plenty of theories that the sniper is working for bin Laden. And I would say that was both paranoia and propaganda.

WND article: similiar reports have been floating around since 9/11. The reason that the FBI and CIA missed the hints about 9/11 is because the large majority of the information they get is useless. I think after they got their asses handed to them by congress, they've opened their filters a little more, and are just dumping some information into the stream, so if something happens again, they can say they warned people, but no one beleaved them. I think there might also be a situation where reports that the news might have previously ignored as not worth bothering with, are now seen as a big ratings/sales figures boost. People seem to be eating up anything and everything having to do with Osma's boys.

That said, I'm a bit hyper sensative to the whole "it's terroists" thing, and so I tend to jump in the oppisite direction. So may be I'm full of shit.

Update for today: Yesterday's shooting has been officially linked to the sniper. I assume that that means it's the same gun. We are also waiting on some kind of "graphic" from the FBI. They mentioned this yesterday, but as of 11am EST this morning, we had nothing. The reason for the delay is that they are supposedly creating the graphic with help from "witnesses." And they do not want to release the graphic untill all the "witnesses" are comfortable with the graphic. A reporter for WTOP (local news radio, that's affiliated with CBS) said something about making sure that a "witness" could not be identified by the information, to protect the identity of the "witness" (I assume from the sniper). The news report said "witness" Chief Moose said "witnesses," and mentioned nothing about protecting identities. WTOP also said something about the graphic having to do with the box truck, which was seen at two of the initial rash of shootings. Police yesterday moved their focus from the box truck to a "white panel van with a ladder on top" or a "white Astro Van" (with or without the ladder) depending on which news source you listen to*.

I also did a little shooping today. I had to go out and get a couple suits for the new contract at work. Potomac Mills Mall, which is right next to me, and is one of the largest malls in the region, was about 1/2 to 3/4 it's normal capacity. That might be a little skewed though by the over cast day and the early time when I was over there. Traffic around here did seem to be picking up as I went home. I also stopped at a gas station about 4-5 miles off 95. Business there seemed to be normal, may be down just a little bit. With the exception of the number of people at the mall, I'd say it was a normal day.

* most Astro vans are panel vans, their just mini vans, instead of fullsized. And they are also all over the DC area.

So any guesses for when people are going to start complaining that Police Chief Moose / the law enforcement agencies generally have f'ed up the investigation?

Note - I am not saying that they have f'ed up. I just bet that people (pundits/politicians/lawyers of families of victims) will complain they did, that there will be an investigation and that the investigation will either:
(i) Report that there were fundamental errors that need to be addressed but which, basically, nobody would have noticed until this event - which will be reported save for the last bit; or
(ii) Report that basically they did the best anybody could in the circumstances - which will be criticised by 'experts'/pundits, and the criticism will be reported.

Yup... I think they're in the shit whatever happens (unless it's an arrest very soon). And no, as far as I can tell, I don't think they've fucked up, either.

But someone must be blamed, and in the absence of the person responsible...

Don't usually have much time for cops, but in these kinds of situations, my heart goes out to them.

Flippant drunken comment (oh, and tSuibhne- no offence meant by teh following. If it was London, I would be shitting myself every time I left my house. So don't think I'm belittling the situation. Please.)

I reckon it's Charlton Heston. Having had (or being about to have) his gun permit taken away because he's showing signs of Alzheimer's (true) has pushed him over the edge. Further over the edge. Imagine being Charlton Heston and being one of the minority of US adults WHO'S NOT ALLOWED TO CARRY A GUN?

Seriously, I'm surprised nobody in the media's even suggested Zodiac. I'd be bloody surprised if it WAS him, to be honest, but I'm even more surprised (though pleasantly) they haven't got all sensationalist with links and stuff. Especially after the Tarot card.

Correction, the best lead they've released is a picture of a truck. Cops, in all of these situations with hold evidence from the public. Sometimes it's some little piece of information that will help them verify something. Other times, it's to calm public fears.

I'd place bets that there are several leads that have not been released. Three reasons:

1) Moose was pissed when the Tarot Card was leaked to the public. I've been told he said at one of the first press conferences after the leak something along the lines of, "if Channel 9 wants to lead this investigation, then we'll ask the people if they'd rather us do it, or Channel 9" (Channel 9 first leaked the info, I beleave) By afternoon he'd calmed down quite a bit, but I'd imagen that if the leak is found, they'll be finding themselves reassigned VERY soon.

2) Again and again I've heard people use the phrase "playing their cards close to thier chest" to describe the cops. They are giving out only the information that they feel is neccisary.

3) There have been RUMORS of a grainey, possibly a survalence cam, photo of the suspect. Last night the local Fox station said that they talked to someone who was questioned by police because he supposedly "fit a description" of the sniper. This person supposedly said that they were shown said photograph. Now, the local Fox station here is known for sensational reporting. The kind of stuff you'd expect from Fox, so I'm logging the info, but I'm not putting a lot of weight on it, untill I hear it from other sources.

Also Mole, what other kind of leads do you expect? The guy is shooting from long distances at unsuspecting victims. While there have been 11 shootings (including the first miss) all but four of them took place in less then 36 hours. All but 7 took place in the span of a handful of hours.

Face it Mole, you want it to be a terrorist, or some kind of professional, because that will help you make sense of things. That'll give you something to pin things down with. And so, you're making the evidence fit that theory. I'm not saying it isn't terrorists or what not, I'm saying it's unlikely. And you've yet to show anyone why it is likely.

NOTE: The same Fox news report last night had a segment on how easy it would be for someone to pull this kind of thing off. A "weapons expert" (I think from some company called The Elite Group) said that he has seen know evidence to point to a vet. The report also said that the weapon that is beleaved to being used is available at any gun shop. And that the needed training is known by any serious hunter. They also pointed out that Army sniping guides are available online and at Army Surplus stores. As any of the Americans here who ever went through an army fetish in thier childhood can tell you. They also echoed the sentament from someone here that a teenager could pull this off.

I say terrorist to mean a foreign operative. Domestic terrorism is just crime.

I disagree with this statement. It fails to take any recognition of the political nature of the actions of a domestic terrorist.

Terrorism is using violence to stimulate fear in a target to acheive a political end. It is an attack to change a regime. If the person who bombed a building did it to topple or weaken a goverment then he, or she, is engaged in terrorism not merely crime regardless of citizenship.

Of course, then we have to ask ourself what possible political motivation this killer could have. None jumps readily to mind. This is why most terrorists tell us, or someone else, why they are killing. This killer's message does not reveal a political goal so I doubt that it is a terrorist, foreign or domestic.

New to the forum, and from Sweden (english being my second language). You have been warned.

We don't get a lot of coverage on this issue over here, so I don't have a lot of the latest or in-depth news, but still I think it's a really interesting case (not being acctually AFFECTED by these kind of things helps, if you're trying to observe and analyse, rather than emote).

About the Zodiac references: I personally think that this is a bit to... "blunt" for someone as cryptic as the Zodiac, especially considering the "I am God" statement (not even considering the fact that he "quit" a while ago). Rather, it seems likely that this is either the police-offender communication (through media) that someone noted, or (maby more likely) something not directly linked/a nutcase statement.

About the serialkiller/mass murderer definition: If I recall (from some of my work on the Moscow serialkiller Tjikathilo [Swedish spelling]), the leding investegator did a lot of groundwork on the issue of the serial killer mind. Most often, a serial killer attacks and kills people in an attempt to release pain and anguish (which, actually, works). The catch is that it works like a drug; the more you use it, the less effective it gets, which increases the "dosage", thus speeding up the killings, lessening the proffessionalism, which is what is generally ment by a killer "wanting to be caught" (most often not true, just a result of the methods getting "sloppier").
Also, a serial killer does NOT get this release of anguish if the killing is impersonal. As it has been noted in the military proffession, killing from a distance is helluvalot easier than getting close and personal with knives.

If this is a definition that's "true", it would suggest that what we're dealing with here is not the serial killer-type, but rather the mass murderer, which has no general defenition, other than a person killing a lot of people (doh), thus including anything from spree killers to politically motivated killers (not terrorists). This is not to suggest that a mass murderer could not "slip" into the serial killer-role, which sometimes happens as the killings become more rapid and the "distance" (between attacker and victim) decreases.

The possiblity of this being some Al-Quaida cell, it seems (to me) unlikely. Terrorist attacks are usually openly confirmed (as the political content of the attacks would otherwise be lost) and they are (in the Al-Quaida case) more symbolic; as it was suggested earlier in the thread, embassies, noteable structures, specific ethnic groups and high profile officials might be targeted, not just the (demographicly) "random" people. As for the killings to be motivated by an urge to "kill Americans", it may well be, although it also seems rather unlikely aswell, since the "American archetype" seldom includes any minorities.
The link to the Iraq-issue (in form of a "lone veteran") seems, if not more likely, at least more interesting.

As for the emotion-part; I hope that they catch the guy (quick). Though, hoping doesen't help very often (unless you're doing it in that Chaos-mage type of way).

Our Lady of The Two Towers

The FBI have released a photo-fit image of a white van they wish to
question in connection withthe recent spate of killings in the US.

The van is described as being between 1 and several years of age,
approximately eight to eleven feet tall and weighs anything up to three
tonnes.

FBI criminal profiler Brett Dunsley Sanchez III said today "We believe the van is an innocent party, but it must come forward as it has information that we desperately need to stop this madman / these madmen / this force of evil (delete as appropriate)"

Eyewitness reports that a 'white van' had been seen acting suspiciously near several of the murder scenes led FBI investigators and local police officers to a nearby U-Haul depot which several hundred white vans were known to frequent. However, after extensive questioning the FBI are still baffled.

President George W Bush said tonight that he had "incontroversial evidents" that a white van, of Middle Eastern appearance, had been seen speeding from the scene of several of the shootings. As a result all white vans, panel vans, trucks and campers will be transported to Guantanamo bay for questioning.

"This is a real threat to the stability of the United Stated of America and the world" President Bush said, "There's no reason why the most evil men in the world should be allowed to have access to weapons of mass destruction or panel vans". It is understood that Prime Minister Blair (Democrat - UK) has offered to send a team of specialists from Dagenham, the little known and secretive Rapid Transit Force, to Washington.

The public were requested not to approach any white van they should come across, but to contact local law enforcement officers who were standing bywith Patriot Missile Systems and other small arms.

Mole, I think we just got the evidence that you were wondering about. Cops are now confident that after last night's shooting they'll be able to grab the guy. There seem to be multiple witnesses. I'm to tired to write much more, there's a link to a Washington post article on my blog though. Scan up in the thread for the link.

Also, even Bushy-po is now saying there is no evidence of foreign terrorism. No word on whether it's one of Saddam's people though. Could be them damn Republican Guards. Gotta watch out for them.

I wonder if the killer lives in Virginia. It's interesting that he began the shootings in Montgomery County during a weekday, as though he drives into town via 95N for the work week and then back for weekends off. Killing closer to home might suggest he's getting sloppy.

Re: Zodiac ... is there a history of serial killers changing their MO? As others have pointed out, this doesn't have the hallmarks of a serial killer. My money's on a right-wing hunter/military nut. Possibly a Gulf War vet pushed over the edge by the sequel.

Re: terrorism ... reading back, the debate here seems to have sprung up by someone misreading "possible" as "likely." It is possible that this is the work of a terrorist, and it would be quite an effective method (it's worth noting that the FBI has yet to catch this guy on their home turf - and no wonder that our terror-obssessed "leaders" are refusing to touch this). But if this is a terrorist effort, I would think the DC sniper would be joined by dozens in other communities all around the US. Imagine the shitstorm that would erupt if that happened. Americans don't have the resolve to endure an Israeli lifestyle.

Re: conspiracies ... the fact that we haven't found this guy even with spy planes operating suggests that common Big Brother conspiracies are fantasies, unless we're assuming that the government is allowing him to remain free so as to not tip their hand on spy tech.

I would think the DC sniper would be joined by dozens [of other snipers] in other communities all around the US.

That's assuming it's a coordinated effort, not a lone ex-mujahadin making a point. Kind of a synthesis of theories, here.

Americans don't have the resolve to endure an Israeli lifestyle.

I'm sure we would learn it if we had to.

unless we're assuming that the government is allowing him to remain free so as to not tip their hand on spy tech.

You say that like it's unreasonable.

So, what's the word on this extortion bid? Supposedly, he's left messages demanding money. Doesn't that seem a little wacky? Why wait so long, and does he really think he can claim the money? Or, could the fuzz be engaging in psy-ops tactics here? If he didn't demand money but they say he did, he might be so outraged that someone's trying to steal his thunder that he'll break cover.

Oh what a fun day it's been. I am SO glad I'm not commuting from MD anymore. I'd have been lucky to get out of my subdivision before being stopped at a roadblock this morning. For those that missed it, after a shooting this morning the MD side of the metro area was basically locked down. The American Legion Bridge (one of the two main entrances into VA from MD, and the only main entrance on the west side of the city) was completly shut down for most of the morning rush hour. Along with large sections of the DC beltway in MD. Shootings at the begining of rush hour are not fun. (BTW, on a good day DC has one of the worst rush hours in the country. If I recall correctly we rank something like fifth) Hospitals, apparently, were forced to rescheadule elective surgeries when doctors and nurses couldn't get to the hospital, and schools were left scrambling to put adults in classes when teachers couldn't get in before the opening bell.

I'm going to make this short, because I have to get up early tomorrow.

re: terrorists

Even the White House is coming out that the chance that this is a terrorist, is slim. Judging by their fondness for using terrorism to push what they want through congress, I'm not taking that litely. The money thing also deffinetly puts a hole in their theory. Not saying its not a possibility, just that it's getting more and more remote.

re: the money

The cops have been taking this guy(s) very seriously. They aren't yanking anyones chain here. The question is, is he serious about the money, or is he just ranking people's chains?

re: spy planes

Remember, for the spy plane to see something, it has to be in the area. With the fact that today was the first shooting in Montgomery County since the 3rd, I'm betting that it wasn't near Montgomery County. I'm also not convinced that it's "involvement" isn't being exaturated (or how ever you spell it) by either the media or the goverment.

re: previous comments about people getting pissed at the cops

Things might change afterwards, but I think the cops probably have one of their highest approvial ratings right now. Even when they shut down the beltway today, people were taking a "well, if it'll help catch the guy" attitude about it.

re: cops over all

they are EVERYWHERE right now. I'm serious, you can't drive more then 10 miles with out passing two or three. Their sitting on the side of the road. In parking lots. Driving around. Their visibility is high right now. And for once, that doesn't scare me.

re: shout outs

props to the Gaurdian Angels. They're pumping gas for people at some gas stations up close to DC. And I caught the end of a report today talking about them pumping gas and doing people's grocery shopping around Richmond. Also props to the gas station owner near DC who is now offering free full service for anyone who wants it.

re: VA

Since the first Fredricksburg shooting, I've theorised that the guy lives in VA. Fredricksburg is not the place to attack if you want to strike fear in the hearts of people in DC. Despite what some in the media might say, no one really considers Fredricksburg part of the DC metro area. Unless they're trying to sell office space.

re: "and no wonder that our terror-obssessed "leaders" are refusing to touch this"

Confirmation of Monday's arrests (which turned out to be useless) came from Ari what's his name over at the White House. Bush is supposedly being updated dailey on the situation. Make of that what you will.

re: lieing to the cops

The guy who gave the false statement to the cops, about seeing the sniper shoot the woman in front of the Home Depot, and caused the cops to waste two days following up his bogus leads, had his bail denied. I tell ya, I do not want to be that guy if he's released before people forget about this.

Um, other thoughts...

It's weird watching the chief of police talking to someone through the media. That was kind of odd. And to ask the guy to call back because you didn't get the message, that took some balls. Apparently, he did though, so...

Anyone care to place bets on who will be playing who when this all gets turned into a movie? Hollywood will probably go nuts, they can use all their cliches, and the damn thing will still ring true.

Weird times we live in.

Seems like they probably are the right guys.

This has apparently (and understandably) led to despair among the Muslim community. It seems unlikely this guy had al-Qaeda connections, but the fact that he's a Muslim and had apparently been heard by acquaintances praising the WTC attacks means it's probably crusade time again.

My take is- (and as yet, this is all up in the air- he MAY have had al-Qaeda connections, so I could be completely wrong)- if you think killing a bunch of people is cool, you're gonna be impressed by people who can do it on a large scale.

New question- I don't understand American law too much, but as far as I could tell from the news this morning, he's killed in at least three states, at least two of which have the death penalty. Is this gonna be another argument between states as to who gets to kill him? And what about the kid? I think he's a minor, yeah? What if it turns out he did all the shooting (unlikely, I know)?.

People want blood. (Even one of our UK papers- think it was the Sun, not sure- had the headline "Now it's your turn to die".)

I hate the death penalty. I hate people killing each other full stop. My point is, given that it's already in place and will undoubtedly be used, how will it work?

(Unless of course they're the wrong guys. I added this part so as not to look stupid later.)

He's a Gulf veterean as well isn't he... I wonder whether this will do anything to American discourse about the military, or whether it'll get ignored by most people. Interesting article on a possible motive for the snipers.

Deacon Gregory Kiley, the Roman Catholic chaplain at Five
Points Correctional Facility, believes Muhammad is a member of a
cult founded in the New York state prison system. "I'm quite sure
that he belongs to a cult ... called the Five Percenters," said
Kiley, who works with prisoners of all faiths at the maximum
security facility.

Of course, I've got problems with the 'cult' thing, but it's an interesting theory.

For some background. The 5%ers are an off shoot of the Nation of Islam. While the Nation is moving closer to mainstream Islam, the 5%ers have stuck to the groups 'black power/superiority' roots.

I'm acctually surprised the mainstream press, at least the conservative right, haven't jumped on this. Since it would give them more ammo to attack hip hop, which they seem to love so much. From the article:

The Five Percenter ideology has been embraced by members of the
modern rap music community, according to Kiley, Swedenburg and the
hip-hop music site, www.africana.com. A song by the Jamaican
reggae/rap group Brand Nubian has used the Five Percenter phrase
"Word is Bond," a phrase used by the snipers in at least one of
their letters, the Washington Post has reported.

Rapper Busta Rhymes, members of the highly influential Wu-Tang Clan,
are also reported to be active Five Percenters. Kiley speculated
that this is how Muhammad learned of the movement and adopted some
of its teachings.

I beleave that I remember Busta's involvement in the group was mentioned in his Behind The Music. If I recall correctly, he gives credit to the group for straightening him out when he was a kid. I can't back up the Wu-Tang connection, but it wouldn't surprise me.

In other news, there's an interesting portrait of Chief Moose in the Washington Post. Apparently he was pissed over the tarot card for two reasons. One, because a note attached to the card specifically said not to release it, and:

Moose said he was also speaking to the sniper that day. "You want to make sure that the people who left the card know that you're upset. So that if they feel like any potential trust has been violated," they'd know it was not the chief's fault.

There was so much going on behind the scenes here, it should be interesting to see the full story when the books start coming out.

I just wanted to clear up one thing. "Word is bond" is a typical slang phrase used by anyone in hip-hop a few years ago. It's still used a little bit but is considered out of date now. To use this phrase to tie the suspects in with the 5 percenters is a bit of a weak link, to say the least.

tSuibhne
00:55 / 06.11.02
And if that was all, then there might be a point. But, he has already admitted to being a member of the Nation of Islam. The Five Percenters is, in fact, an off shoot of the Nation. The idea that someone who admits to being a member of the Nation, could slide into being a member of the Five Percenters is not that big of a leap. Esspecially when someone considers the recent shift in the Nation's teachings (it's move to more mainstream Islam) and the Five Percenters relationship with the original, radical, ideals of the Nation.

The use of the term "Word is bond" is not a lynch pin, as much as it's a bit of back up evidence.

Of course, all of this is based on the word of one person, so it can only be put forward as a theory. But, discounting it on the popularity of a phrase several years ago, is not a reason to ignore.
