Barbelith music exchange?

rizla mission

It seems that many Barbelithers, myself included, now have CD copying facilities.

It also seems that Barbelithers, myself included aren't terribly rich, and that there is a mammoth deficit between 'amount of music I want to hear' and ' amount of music I can afford to hear'.

Thus I propose we start a swap-shop style system wherein we all copy CDs for each other and so forth.. great!

Um ..If people reckon this kind of organised group piracy is highly dodgy and illegal (as opposed to just, y'know, a bit dodgy and illegal)then I can delete this thread and we'll say no more about it and stroll up and down the street whistling innocently whilst the policemen scratch their heads in a comedic manner..

But otherwise, any takers?

that
14:20 / 04.10.02
Hell yeah. Count me thoroughly in.

Elijah, Freelance Rabbi

myself and uncle ret have already swapped disks, im down if people want to catch the Elijah Flava.

that was terrible, i'm sorry...

I can only minidisc. You guys can have your fucking fun. I'll just get my rocks off listening to traffic

Imaginary Mongoose Solutions
06:00 / 05.10.02
I'm in. That reminds me, Grant is long past due something for his efforts so long ago. That was a fantastic tape, man.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
12:48 / 05.10.02
I'm up for it (in fact I remember drunkenly promising to burn you a whole bunch of stuff at the last meet, but have no idea what it was). And I think we all know I have little problem with piracy.

Just remember- music is taping home killing (the name of an album I saw for sale at a gig once and have been unable to find).

remorse
18:48 / 05.10.02
Yes, once I get Illmatic's cd out to him I will join the fun here.

Will there be a wishlist started? Someone could pick from the list of music they have and could burn it and send it.

For instance,

remorse has:
Alice in Chains Facelift
Primus Frizzle Fry
Public Enemy Muse Sick in Hour Mess Age
Grease motion picture soundtrack

Varis 08 wants Frizzle Fry for some stange reason, ze either PM's me or posts in the exchange thread that he is interested in scooping a disc. I reply saying no problem, and maybe see what Varis has to offer in return, or I could check the list of other contributors music instead.

This is just an idea. Will it work? Any other suggestions?

Riz, did you have any plans to set this up?

rizla mission
14:07 / 06.10.02
Not as such. Wishlist sounds good though.

I want:

The Locust
Arab on Radar
Swans, DNA etc.
The Fall
the first Silver Mount Zion record
Some good death metal
Sonic Youth - debut EP, Walls Have Ears, Silver Session, SYR5
The Cramps
some old school Dick Dale
Bikini Kill stuff that isn't the 'first two records'
The Shaggs
early Half Japanese
Farout shit with free jazz and mournful violins
Loads and loads of other stuff I can't think of at the moment, much of it hopefully more pop-related than the above..
Anything else you think I might like

I have:

well, y'know, all the nutty stuff I like..

jUne, a sunshiny month
06:33 / 07.10.02
got more vinyl than cd's, but am defintely in too.
do we list here ?

illmatic
08:31 / 07.10.02
Yo, I'm in like Flynn. Will post a list of ridiculous crap soon..
Stoatie lives down the same street as me but I still think we should arrange music swaps thru the board just to be difficult..

Locust No longer
20:27 / 07.10.02
Well, seeing that I still owe Rizla and Grant tapes from probably a year past I should get my ass in gear. Do you guys want burnt mix CDS or mix tapes? Either one is okay, but I'm limited with songs on the CDs.

rizla mission
14:28 / 08.10.02
I don't mind.. either way, it's sure to rule.

Spatula Clarke
20:43 / 08.10.02
I can cover yr Fall and Silver Mt. Zion needs, Riz. If Locust can't, that is.

Which isn't likely, I admit.

grant
21:11 / 08.10.02
Locust: either will do!

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
06:23 / 09.10.02
I've got a collection of DHR stuff, a whole shitload of Current 93 and related stuff, Swans, Cave, Psychic TV... LOTS of dodgy goth stuff, and possibly the biggest Strawberry Switchblade collection outside their mums' houses...

I'd like... weird shit. Japanese or German weird shit, preferably. Or hip-hop in a language other than English, because it changes the experience entirely...

Spatula Clarke
11:42 / 09.10.02
Oo, I'll have some of what he's having.

that
12:15 / 09.10.02
I have, amongst other things:

Metal/Industrial: Lots of: NIN, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein. Some: Smashing Pumpkins. A little of: Clutch, T.A.S.S., Shihad, KMFDM, Alec Empire, Swans.
Singer/songwriters: Tori Amos, Diamanda Galas, Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, Ed Harcourt, Smog, PJ Harvey, Pete Yorn
Goth: Cure, The Crow soundtrack, some Cranes, Bauhaus, Fields of the Nephilim, Sisters, but generally you're better off asking Stoatie.
Dance: Underworld, Hallucinogen
Reggae: Lee 'Scratch' Perry
Classical: I've got access to lots of the usual suspects. Ask me. And try Jan Garbarek/the Hilliard Ensemble - they rock.
Other noteworthy stuff: Black Heart Procession, Lincoln, Mecca Normal, Mazzy Star, Pigeonhed, 'From Dusk Til Dawn' Soundtrack, Velvet Underground, Nick Cave

And other stuff that probably isn't worth mentioning...

I'd like - cool stuff in languages other than English. Industrial-dance stuff. Good goth. And some educational stuff, because I've heard fuck all by, for instance: Pavement, Sonic Youth, etc. etc. And anything else, really, would just like to widen my musical horizons, pretty please...

that
12:39 / 09.10.02
And jazz. Would like some interesting jazz...

that
12:51 / 09.10.02
Btw, does anyone else feel weirdly exposed after posting the contents of their CD collections?

rizla mission
13:32 / 09.10.02
Not really. It's practically my no.1 hobby.

ooh.. things is taking off..

E. Randy: May I take you up on the Silver Mt. Zion and Fall offer? What would you like in exchange?

Stoatie: I could definitely go for some of those early Swans records, and have you got Hanin Elias solo album? I'm afraid some of the best bits of my weird Japanese shit collection are on vinyl, but I can do eX-Girl, Cornelius, Shibusashirazu and Melt Banana's 'Teeny Shiny'.. don't know if I've got anything German, but British/american weird shit is available in abundance..

Cholister: I can sort you out with some Sonic Youth and Pavement in exchange for Mazzy Star and Nick Cave (I'm actually missing everything post-Birthday Party and pre-Murder Ballads)..

Matthew Fluxington
13:41 / 09.10.02
I'll handle Pavement, if you want. You don't have to give anything back to me, either.

Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!
14:00 / 09.10.02
Hello flux!

that
14:24 / 09.10.02
Flux - is that because you just want to spread the word, or because my collection is so unappealing? Either way, it would be very much appreciated.

Rizla - I've only got Murder Ballads onwards on CD, so I'm going to have to disappoint on that score - I can do you Mazzy Star though, in exchange for some Sonic Youth?

Matthew Fluxington
14:36 / 09.10.02
Oh, I don't need anything in return cos if I want something, I can just get it on Soulseek. I'd rather have people recommend things to me, and have them save their cash.

jUne, a sunshiny month
07:03 / 10.10.02
ooooooook, so here's my cd list. i hope the fact that it's not by genres or alphabetic or anything won't make you angry against me.
i got more stuff but it's on vynil so you guys got to come home to check !

Rizla- I've got pretty much all Swans stuff up until "White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity"... but most of it I'll have to do you on tape, cos they're on vinyl. "Children Of God" is my personal number one recommendation...

Cave, I think I've got just about everything...

Lots of Coil and Legendary Pink Dots, too.

I would be very chuffed indeed if someone could provide me with:

Polyphonic Spree
Michael Hurley (anything with 'The Werewolf' on it)
The Shaggs
Railroad Jerk (anything)
Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music (so much said about it and I've not heard a single second of it)
The 'Nuggets' comp (or is it 'Pebbles'? I'm after the garage rather than the psych one)
Le Tigre (anything)
Bikini Kill (anything)

I'm also after plugging the gaps in my 90s Fall stuff, which I was either too jaded to buy or had to sell in a moment of desperation. This means all 'proper' albums of new stuff between (but not including) 'Shiftwork' and '2G+2' except 'The Unutterable'.

E. Randy: what Fall stuff will you be sending to Rizla? I've got all the pre-90s stuff, maybe we could divvy up.

Matthew Fluxington
10:09 / 10.10.02
Sav, I shall provide you with Polyphonic Spree and Le Tigre, along with what I've been forgetting to send you for weeks now.

Sav & Riz> Most of the 90s Fall I've got is on vinyl, with the exception of The Infotainment Scan. It's all back to CD from Levitate to Are You are Missing Winner, but means that I can't do you Code: Selfish, Middle Class Revolt, etc. I can also provide the vast majority of stuff up to This Nation's Saving Grace (including recent limited reissues like A Part of America Therein and Room to Live).

Which all reminds me that I promised Jonny Suede a Fall comp months ago...

E. Randy>

'Levitate' and/or 'Are You Are Missing Winner' alone would do me lovely, thanks. I've had Lev on knackered old tape for ages, and think it the best of their 90s LPs, and have not heard 'Are You..' at all. What can I do you in return?
Nearly all of my Fall stuff is on vinyl, but I have the means to put it on CD anyway, if you don't mind the odd crackle (most of the available CD re-issues were taken from vinyl, btw - complete with the occasional skip). Riz , Randy, I'll PM you with my email address and our people can talk to each others people and so on.

"Which all reminds me that I promised Jonny Suede a Fall comp months ago... "
Hah! So did I! And neither of us has come up trumps yet. I owe the same Fall comp to Riz and Fly (in return for his excellent Hip Hop comp, which he sent 50 yrs ago). Thing is, I find the Fall are particularly difficult to make comps of, so I'll be much happier sending a brace of albums instead.
