I've been listening to some tracks of their latest album, Turn The Bright Lights On, and I'm mesmerized. These guys are *so* good. "NYC" is a hymn, I tell you. Does anyone know more about them/have stories that would like to share? Are they the next big thing?

I've listened a bit my friend's copy of the Interpol record, and it is indeed fucking fine.

Perhaps a little too indebted to Joy Division (I read somewhere they even use 'Dead Souls' as their intro tape when playing live), but since when was that a bad thing? And plenty of their stuff is clearly their own, so, yeah, good band.

Yaaaay - just love their album. When was the last time we heard that anguish in a voice, that -- seriousness... (answer: the 80's, which is what I luuuuv about the music scene now: it's all 80's retro - from electroclash to Liars/Yeahyeahyeahs/Strokes/Interpol/Britishseapower garage rock)

Tip of the month: listen to Von Bondies

So...I should've seen them when they were in town last night then, despite the fact that I've not heard anything by them? Yeah. That's what I thought. Damnation...

I'm afraid so

A story, albeit a gentle, inconsequential one: my humble little band supported them when they played Brighton a few months ago... they soundchecked with the aforementioned "NYC", which was quite an introduction (a hymn? yes, I'll go along with that), and then, once they'd gotten over their bemusement at the venue's trip switch (which shuts down the on-stage power supply if you flout the preordained decibel level; rock and fucking roll) got chatting to us, and were delightful chaps. They loved our drummer's fills, and told her so, and she was thus reduced to a giggling schoolgirl for the rest of the evening.

The bass player looks so much like Kraftwerk (yes, all four of them simultaneously) that I didn't even notice the Joy Division thing; "New York Teutonica" was the tag that sprang to mind. And they briefly turned into the Strokes halfway through the set, which was lovely. Excellent band, must pick up the album soon.

I rather like them. It's one of the few new CDs that makes me want to live again.

Ah, I think the record is just okay. I quite like the opening four songs (Untitled/Obstacle 1/NYC/PDA) but the rest of the record falls off sharply. The songs that are great are top notch, but Matador's done a lot better than this in the past. It's kinda sad to think that this is the best new Matador signing since Solex...

From what I've heard, it was fairly average. Which is a shame - as I wanted to like them, but... gah.

I agree with Flux, though I'd extend it to inlcude the fifth song, as well. After that, I'm tuned out, despite listening to it a bunch of times. I know those first five like my own house, but the rest mean nothing to me.

But those first five are really good...

But what about STELLA WAS A DIVER ND SHE WAS ALWAYS DOWN and ROLAND. Those two come pretty late on the album, and those are the ones I always return to...

STELLA WAS A DIVER ND SHE WAS ALWAYS DOWN

May I say that the typos and capitals make that the best song title ever!

Sadly, it's actually 'driver', isn't it?

Nope. Got the CD in front of me and Stella is, indeed, one who dives. Down.

Actually, my favorite song is the last one, "Leif Erickson."

I think my problem with side b of Turn On The Bright Lights is that a) the songs aren't as catchy as the songs on side a, they drone a little too much, and just sort of meander and b) the sound is just a bit too goth for my tastes on those songs, I keep expecting him to belt out "Bela Lugosi is dead...", especially on "Stella".

Bela was a Vampire but now he's always down.

Saw 'em on Letterman. Hated 'em. Didn't so much mind the song, it was the vocal stylings. I say "vocal stylings" because you couldn't call it singing, nor talking, nor anything musical. Does he do that on every song? If not, I might like them!

Saw 'em again on some talk show or other. A different song, and I have to retract my earlier comments. Pretty? No. Good stuff? Yes.

You must have seen them on Carson Daly's show after Conan O'Brien. I caught that too, or at least the first song they did cos I fell asleep sometime after Sam Rockwell came out. They played "Obstacle 1", which is my favorite song from their album. I was sort of surprised by their appearance, I had never seen them before. I'd read things that described how they look, but somehow I still had it all wrong. The singer guy - I expected him to be a lot older than that, I really did.

There's some really unfortunate haircuts in that band...

The singer sounds like he's spent many long hours learning to replicate Ian Curtis' singing exactly, to such an extent that it's quite off-putting, despite the general goodness of Interpol's music..

The Ian Curtis impression is most egregious on that particular track. On other songs, particular "NYC", he sings much more like himself—on pitch and everything.

The dude from Interpol kin sang real purty if he wants to—it's an absolute affectation, and I too find it a bit off-putting: the thing about Ian is that really was the best he could do—he wasn't (as this kid is) a competent singer pretending to be an incompetent singer—he was straining, working as hard as he could to get the wretched croak that he got, and that's what gives even Joy Division's quieter songs their edge of desperation.

Does anyone want to see Interpol at Shepherd's Bush Empire, London on June 24? I've got a ticket and I (most probably) won't go - since I live in Sweden and they will play here i July.

i also think the lead singer sounds like david byrne much of the time.

i like the record a lot. derivative? sure, but when you like what it's derived from, and you can't get it anywhere else...(shrug)

Never thought of the Byrne comparison, but maybe you're right - sort of a nasal voice.
Now - is there really nobody here who would like a ticket to see the band in London?
Huh?

I just keep trying to like them and I don't know why. Apart from the fact that most everyone I know is pretty sure they had a class with one or the other of them at some point. I can't help but think they're just another decent NYC band that happened to be making the sound that the kids want to hear these days, and the scenester attention just happened to be shifting back to New York at the same time.

But then, I can't stand the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, so most likely my opinion about current indie music is null and void anyway. When everyone stops being smug and ironic, will someone let me know?

I like them OK. They do sound like Joy Division sometimes, on some notes--only with more talent, traning, and skilled production, but less ... authenticity, maybe. When I listen to them, I usually find that I'd prefer to hear Joy Division.

Anyway, I mostly wanted to post to point people at this, for a small laugh:

Interpol v. Joy Division: What Would Ian Curtis Think? No, Really.

whats the verdict on Antics? I'm pretty sure I like it and that its the best album I've gotten in awhile. Even though I made bigger expectations, I seem to be playing it incessantly. like tracks like:Narc, Next Exit, Evil, Not Even Jail and Slow Hands.

they're falling into their own form now more now, yeah? kind of disappointed with the lack of lyrics on the sleeve book.

man those guys are bad ass.

did anyone catch them on Leno? I heard that he read their name wrong? what did he say?
