So.. any plans on the go? any protests planned? that kinda thing?

Admittedly, war/invasion hasn't actually happened yet (officially), but it seems every newspaper and TV station is devoting it's time to constantly telling us it's *going* to happen.. so what are we (by which I mean lefty pinko Liberal types) going to do?

Actually waiting for the killing to start before kicking up a fuss in regard to such blatantly unjustified, undemocratic warmongering seems a bit .. rubbish.. to me, and, in Britain at least, it seems that the majority of people have serious reservations about the idea of war with Iraq (even my Grandad's taken time to declare himself against it, and he usually regards war as a bit of fun that'll show the kids what's-what), and about the only voices raised in favour of it seem to be hardcore Tories and deranged old colonels and so forth..

So should people not be out on the street (or some such), registering their disapproval of the government's conduct and their intention to kick up no end of trouble should war be entered into without due democratic process?

In short, shouldn't we be, y'know, DOING SOMETHING?

Unless we are already and I don't know about it..

Rizla, I have forwarded you some info via email. I hope it's sorta what you are looking for.

As I have zero web-fu and even less time, if you wanted to publish the information here that would be fab.

Cheers!

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

Probably what'll happen is, thousands upon thousands of people will turn up, and the official police estimate'll be two men and a dog. I have every intention of being one of the ignored (or "silent", as the papers would have it) masses, however.

Just to add: I long ago gave up on the idea that demos actually achieved any change. But they're still invaluable, because what DOES happen (which the media never reports) is that all the disparate groups/individuals unite under one banner. A) that means lots of opportunity for meeting people who share your beliefs, and B), the sheer sense of purpose and community it gives you. I find demos have more of a positive effect on those who go on them than on those who're SUPPOSED to be listening. But that in itself is invaluable.

To, not only know that you're not alone in your beliefs, but to actually SEE the physical proof in terms of a WHOLE FUCKING BUNCH OF PEOPLE- that's where the value lies.

Seeya down there. (I have a pirate flag now, btw.)

rizla mission
14:34 / 13.09.02
I feel this particular demo has the potential to achieve quite a lot .. a really big % of people in Britain are opposed to war, including lots with no previous interest in lefty political issues. If it can be demonstrated that something like a majority (rather than just the good ol' "anarchist loonies") have a problem with an attack on Iraq, surely even the most lunk-headed politicians are going to think twice..

Though maybe I'm being overly optimistic.

Tryphena Absent
18:13 / 13.09.02
Demo's are important because they at least let people know that someone's opposed to something. On that note my dad informed me that he's going... well that's that really if he's going then I'm bloody going. I can't let my parents be all rebellious while I sit at home and eat junk food on the sofa.

BTW if anyone read the paper today the labour party have split (slightly) over this whole Iraq thing.

So, anyone know any good meeting places nearby?

How about in front of the (is it the) National Film Theatre cafe, on the opposite bank of the river? Scene of one of my first Barbe-meets...

Massive UK anti-war protest planned for September 28

For details see:
http://www.stopwar.org.uk

On Saturday, 28th September there will be a huge "Don't Attack Iraq"
demonstration in central London. It promises to be easily the
biggest anti-war demonstration in Britain since 11 September
2001 (marches in November and April attracted more than 100,000)
and one of the biggest anti-war actions in Western Europe in
many years.

Assemble 1pm Embankment to march to Hyde Park
COACH TRANSPORT TO LONDON - See http://www.stopwar.org.uk for details

British Prime Minister Tony Blair is George Bush's key ally.
British bombers and British troops are expected to join US forces
if the war against Iraq goes ahead. Yet opinion polls here
consistently reveal massive opposition to the planned war -
opposition that will be visible on the streets of London on
28 September.

Tony Blair risks losing the support of the British public
and his own party by continuing to endorse Bush's policies.

According to a survey carried out for the Daily Mirror
newspaper by ICM Research, 71 per cent of people in Britain
oppose joining a war on Iraq without the approval of the UN.
51% consider George Bush a threat to world peace, and 22%
consider him the biggest threat to world peace.

The demonstration on 28th September is jointly organised
by the Stop the War Coalition and the Muslim Association
of Britain. It is supported by eleven national labour unions,
including the country's largest, UNISON, as well as numerous
religious organizations, Members of Parliament and Members of
the European Parliament, the Mayor of London, human rights
and community-based campaigns, along with prominent
individuals from all walks of life.

see http://www.stopwar.org.uk

We believe it is in the interest of people in the USA to
be aware of the widespread and mounting opposition in
Britain to the planned war against Iraq.

Just in case there are any other Yanks reading this who are looking for some manner in which to express their disgust at this animalistic foreign policy of "they could hurt us if they wanted to, so let's lash out, earn the world's enmity and encourage national insecurity to ensure a police state," well, those in the vicinity of NYC have the opportunity on Oct. 6 with the Not In Our Name rally here in Central Park. Go to www.notinourname.net or www.nion.us to see how to make this happen, and make it happen BIG. It's time for DC to fear us for a change.

A chat about potential trouble here is worth checking. I think any violence is going to be more damaging to the cause than ever, given the nature of the demo, and will play right into the hands of the media pigs. But I suppose we should be aware that it might kick off. (Here I am again, fretting about the safety of my fellow 'Loids like an old mother hen. Just humour me.)
