No, Cameron, this is good. Change the name, distance it from the original intellectual property. Now we have something better than that godawful "LXG" to refer to it by, and at the same time it moves further away from Moore's book.

Thank fuck.

Dark Horizons is reporting that the film has been officially retitled "The League."

Get the fuck out of here.

Might as well simply just make a whole different movie instead - if they're not even using the original title to attract fanboys.

I don't know if it was subconscious, but I'd been staying away from this discussion, avoiding trailers and promotional material, and overall trying not to read anything new about the movie. But I just folded and saw the trailer at the minisite.

Cam's right. B&R '03

Okay, here're my questions.
1. Is the "LXG" Strikeforce supposed to take place in an alternate universe where Victorian culture intersects with early Twentieth Century technology and late Twentieth Century fashion?
2. Does Mina HAVE a personality?
3. Is Mina the "tough chick"?
4. How is Allan Quartemain a "bad guy" fighting for good?
5. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. Do you?
6. Why is grimy ole London so supersheen "grimey"?
7. Who's the joker in the white Batmobile? And why should we care?
8. Is Nemo even IN the movie?
9. Alan Moore is making HOW MUCH to see this happen?
10. Was there an original draft of the screenplay that anyone here even slightly approved of?

here's what Pat Sauriol has to say about the whole League vs. LXG thing...

Fox`s wants THE LEAGUE, not LXG
Our source said something's changed

The rumor first appeared last week on Dark Horizons that 20th Century Fox changed the title of THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN to simply THE LEAGUE. A day later the Horizons story was shot down by a source speaking with IGN FilmForce who said the title of the film hasn't changed.

Technically, that's right but the promotional strategy for the film has been altered. Speaking on the promise of anonymity, one of Coming Attractions' sources said that Fox will no longer be promoting the film as THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMAN; instead, the studio will be pushing (yup, you guessed it) THE LEAGUE as the buzz for the masses. The studio will still be using LXG in some cases to promote the film but otherwise it will be known as THE LEAGUE.

Our source also said that LEAGUE's new trailer is "far better" than the first one. Be on the lookout for two glimpses of Captain Nemo's Nautilus submarine, which our source says looks just as cool as the one seen in the comics.

And here is that new trailer

Still sucks. And the Nautilus looks nothing like it does in the comics, nor is it as cool.

Both times I saw X2, this trailer was met with mockery from the audience.

Actually, I thought the trailer with X2 was a turn in the right direction.

I thought the new trailer was pretty good although they're definitely pushing it now as a Sean Connery vehicle as if there's nothing else to sell it with ("There isn't!" say some of you...). It also looks like dear old Quartermain gets to be in charge of the gang too ("Gentleshmen - we have an exshtrodinary misshion....").

Which means of course that poor old Mina gets demoted to third vampire from left. This is probably for the best or it will give women out there all sorts of crazy ideas... ("Get the teash on darling or I'll have to give you a schlap..").

Loved the Nautilus and check out the Leaguemobile recreating that scene from Speed! And Nemo's beard is never real...

Perhaps it will still be crap but I think it looks suitably bonkers enough to persuade me to go and see it.

Jesus Christ. Like it wasn't bad enough. This from Lying In The Gutters

I hear that Sean Connery has taken over editing the "League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen." To the extent that he comes in after hours, wipes any previous editing work, then saves the result in a hard drive which he carries around with him.

Riiight. Because that's how Hollywood handles an investment of tens of millions of dollars. And the editors union is perfectly happy to sit back while Sean comes in with a fifth and slaps his movie together.

I'll be happy to be proven wrong, but until then this gets filed under 'bullshit'.

I agree with some of what nailbunny said a while back- I long ago realised that getting worked up about people fucking up my favourite things was gonna send me to an early grave.
Although I would have really liked - would still really like, but am not holding my breath - a great LOEG film. Even if the comic had never existed.
But a film of Chaos Engine... now that would truly rock.

I met James Robinson (Starman) in Prague last year while he was working on this, and he seemed to have a lot of faith in it. The sets looked fantastic, all the cast and crew were apparently giving it their all, and I've got a lot of faith in Robinson as a writer (and as someone who genuinely appreciates the comic).

It might truly rock.

Though that was well before post-production so maybe it all went to hell about then. But, jeez... give it a chance.
