I'd love to jam with you guys, but I'm always on the run. Singing can be great. Where's Southampton at anyway?

How did this weekend go?

It went well: a qualified success. Without meaning to put people off, I have unbelievably high standards, which I apply to myself more than anyone. I have to bite my tongue sometimes... we had one extremely experienced musician who only used one idea for the entire jam session. Exactly the same progressions, exactly the same key, exactly the same rhythm. It's very hard when someone's idea of jamming is not listening to anyone else - there's no dynamic there. They just dominate through musical ignorance.

On the plus side, I got to hear someone play who I haven't heard before. And Pin's playing is definitely heading quickly in the right direction - he rocked and was actually more fun to play with than the experienced bassist.

I played crap, BTW. That's what comes from heading straight out of work... it's very hard to engage a creative mindset without the use of ritual, and some of those guys might have thought I was insane for jabbering on in tongues Plus I couldn't hear out of my right ear, which is kinda disorienting.

Paleface: Hmmm. I might be able to sort you out with some kit. Can't promise much... if I can get hold of a keyboard, do you have sound modules with you to make it sound decent? Or would it entail too much work?

Rage: Bring it on.

Why, the very idea [scoff]..

what's a key?

If the next one's on a day when I'm not doing anything else I may well be able to come along.. er, for the purposes of learning..

See? This particular view of my skills surprises the fuck out of me cos, uh... I couldn't hear a fucking thing I was playing. This was, however intentional, as if it was mixed loud enough in the PA then eveyrone might have known what my playing was like.

Yeh, so there's a problem to over come...

Pin: if you want to hear more of yourself, ask if you can be turned up. I could hear you fine, and I was running on one ear. They was a slight difficulty in turning you up more, because you were riding the edge of feeding back as it was. Next time, we'll mic you up better. I guess it's also hard to distinguish two basses when they're playing simultaneously, unless they're EQ'd different.

Riz: You know, there's a big difference between being a dull muso with one idea and being amazing. The former makes a pretence of knowing music theory but actually ignores everyone else in favour of what they want to do. That's what makes them ignorant. The latter makes a joyful, amazing noise, regardless of the boring muso fuckbakery being made by anyone else. That's what makes them transcendent.
