I'll take you all. One at a time or all together.

I now have a permanent music space in Sunny Southampton. Large enough for about ten musicians at a push, and my drums and PA require no dodgy mini-bus to transport. Thirty seconds walk from Southampton Central (that's no exaggeration - there's literally no walking involved at all). I have a spare bed at my place, and plenty of floor. There's a sofa bed in the rehearsal space itself, and I'm sure J the B wouldn't mind putting a few people up. So, feel free to come for an evening, a weekend or a week - we're happy to have you.

The important point: this is not a one off. This place ain't going nowhere. I'm happy to do a largish Barbemeet-type-thing like last time, but I'm also quite prepared to help out with whatever projects any of you are engaged in, whether it's song writing, recording, etc. Feel free to use the time and space as much as you like. If you want to make it a regular thing, that's cool with me. Recording-wise, there's tons of mics and minidisc, but feel free to bring whatever instruments or technology you like.

We'll call it the Hostel 4 Bongo

I would love to jam with you, seeing how I've never been overseas would make it quite the experience too. How long do you think this jam pad of yours will exist I'm wondering?

It's around for the forseeable. The initial arrangement is for at least six months, and I'm hoping that the band I'm co-renting it with will want to rent it for longer.

I'm currently not good enough to play along with my own foot hitting a tin can, let alone actual musicians, but gimmee a few more months and maybe I can join in..

I never made the last lot but my atomized 'PsyhcoDelic guitardrones in space' have reached new heights (depths even) of sonic liquidization, my 'throbbing grainy bass' still grains and throbs, and my sub-croon warblings are still croony and sub. Thankfully I now have the funds to get about again, and the time to do it. So who knows???

I will be there, tho I cannot play for shit. What I CAN play, however, is Hey. Kinda.

Why am I even volunteering for this? Yes! I will sit gamely by and do fuck all, then try, notice it's all mixed in VERY BADLY (no offense, Flame) and stop again. Then comment on how I have water up to my fucking KNEES- can we have better wether this time?

sigh

I'll still be there.

The heavy burden of being pin. We'd love to have you there, mate.

And I'd love to play with Rollo. We'll record any decnt jams that happen.

I've got a zither for you, expressionless... not sure if it will survive the trip down, mind you, as the box is disintegrating, and it's out of tune, but still - I have a zither for you...

Wicked. Cheers, KCC.

So what would you guys like me to do? Set a date again? I'd like to keep this thread in the music forum, to keep people updated about any musical stuff that comes out of this, and to keep the idea of collaborative music current. It's something that I'd like to be ongoing, rather than just organising Gathering threads avery month/quarter.

However, if you fancy a big ol Southampton jam session/meet up, then I can always start a new Gathering thread to arrange it.

I'm up for it again if you fix a date for a jam- or, if you prefer, a chunk of time to develop something further. My time is now both more flexible (yay!) and more apt to be derailed by short-notice shit happening (boo!) but that's the perils of freelancing.

Weekends and evenings, Flame. I'm determined to work with you again, even if it means a weekly e-mail with my schedule.

That goes for all you mother and fatherfuckers.

Congrats on the space, exp; sounds good. I may well be up for a barbejam one day - owing to transportability of kit and freedom. Once I'm not at Uni, and can drive, and important things like that... but yeah. My kit isn't transportable yet; one of the future goals is to get it portable.

Hope this is the beginning of something, anyhow. And yes, keep collaborative music current.

What equipment do you need, Paleface? I'm sure we can swing something, if you don't mind playing borrowed kit.

I've arranged a jam session for Saturday 7th September. Anyone who fancies coming is very welcome (even if you don't play anything). We'll be using Bilu (the bassist who came along for part of the last Barbejam) and hopefully a mate of his who plays guitar. The shared influence in this case being Mogwai, amongst others.

Yeh yeh yeh! I'll be there, cos you totally need two bass players... Or maybe he could learn me stuff. I'm sure he'd love that.

Please come Rollo. And Flux, too. Tho I can see problems with that one...

I'm not sure, but I think I might be able to make it... moving house at the mo, so it might be a bit soon.

finances are still a problem for getting down regularly and are likely to remain so for a leetle while yet- but we'll see.

Alas, I can't make it yet.

Yet.

But I do hope that you enjoy the zither; I'm hoping it gets pro-tooled and effected to fuck at some point. And remember - at some juncture, I'm gonna want it back for my Deathly Ambient Goodness project. Hmm.

Oh, arse. I'm annoyed I can't be there.

Is there any chance of someone who is coming by car and has space and a spare amp, uh... bringing the spare amp? Or something? Or exp, could you try and secure something thru yr, you know... "contacts"? Lugign a bass around is bad enough, but an amp as well is just taking the piss.

Seth
23:17 / 01.09.02
If Bilu's coming he'll bring his bass Pod. If not, worse case scenario you can plug in through the PA. As far as getting amps, I have no transport and they're pretty durn heavy things.

Had another weird synchronous meeting with a bass player last night. Met her previously at a bus stop and was prophetically inspired to ask her if she played bass, which she does (she was a total stranger at the time). Anyway, I handed her a flyer for my mate's club on Tuesday night, without recognising her (she looks very different now), and managed to put two and two together for long enough to get her new number. Thus contact is restored with one of the people I feel more hopeful about commiting to an ongoing project within a week of moving into my rehearsal space, someone I couldn't have contacted any other way because they'd changed their number.

I love life. It's so much weirder and more fun than anyone seems to give it credit.

Um .. how would it be if I turned up, but with the intention more of learning stuff from you guy rsther than contributing all that much?

Oh, and, um, I too would probably need an amp loan..

Seth
21:03 / 02.09.02
I'd love to have you there, Riz. You can crash at my pad. I'll try to book Saturday off work tomorrow.

As far as amps: I may be able to swing a guitar and bass amp... maybe.

So it's very cheeky of us to ask the band you rent with to just leave their shit with strangfers for a day so we can totally Mogwai out on it? Damn...

Oh! And I might not have to leavfe early on Sunday to visit realtives in Swindon, thus saving exp, Snap and Rizla from an early morning with a soggy and realtivephobic me!

I plan to learn too. And I'd feel guyilty of stealing Bilu's bass pod, by the way. Cos he'd be in my face and I could see him. If I can't see them, then I have no problem with it tho.

Yay! Looking forward to this.

It doesn't look like I'll be able to take the day off, so we'll have to play from about 5pm onwards. I'm also working the next day, have to be up at about sixish on the Sunday. Get in touch with JtB if you're planning on coming down earlier.

No probs, peeps. Remember, you don't have to wait for me to organise something - if you fancy a jam, get in touch and I'll see if I'm free.

So who's coming to this, and exactly where is it in relation ot the train station and WHAT'S GOING ON??

Seth
09:50 / 06.09.02
We'll be jamming from about 4.30 onwards. This is when I finish work.

Bilu should be there, with bass and bass pod. We could really do with a decent guitarist: I'll text Bill to remind him later today.

We will jam. Then we will go to a party round my mate's.

No-one has to know where it is exactly - it'll be locked up, anyway, so I can't meet you there. I will meet people outside Southampton Central station at 4.30pm. Be prompt, though!

Ace! Some plans! Cool! I will be there, but do I still need to bring my amp? I will if I have to...

Ace! Yay! But Ben's a fool and so we don't have any skys to hand out. Brr.

Why the FUCK am I saying "ace" all the time?

Seth
19:28 / 06.09.02
Don't bring the amp. You can either go through the PA or try out Bill's Pod. Going through the PA won't sound as good as through an amp, but it may be preferable to lugging you kit around.

OK. I wanna fill the diary.

Someone say a range of dates that they'd like to come to Southampton, I'll check my availability and we'll arrange a session. The other musicians can be made up of other Barbeloids who just happen to be free, or Southamptonites.

I mean you too, Lurkers.

Hmmm. How do I make the next post in this thread without sounding as though I'm just trying to keep it going in a sea of people who aren't really interested, thereby showing all my frustrations and disappointments.

Ah. That should do it.

Hey, I'm interested, most definitely. I've wanted musicians to sing/play with for ages.

Unfortunately term time (oct, nov, first half of dec etc...) takes me further north. I'm less likely to be able to travel south during term, but it is still feasible.

How did this weekend go?

The Strobe

In the way of equpiment I need... I'd like to bring a sequencer/groovebox, sampler, fx box, mixer, hammond module, master keys - basically, my little rig at home. Which I know, and can knock stuff up with fast. But it's never with me at Uni, not set up in an easily transportable way, and not quite tailored for live work yet.

I can play guitar, though I don't own an electric, and am incredibly un-shit-hot. Keys are my main instrument. I mean, anything with Keys is fine, but I'm guessing given reports of the last Barbejam, a real syntheszier would be more handy. I could always bring an effects box for my own delays/phasers, etc.

I think it might be more doable when I buckle and go computerised - a laptop with Reason could be the perfect thing, and certainly more transportable...
