Hi there -

BBC/MP/Matthew Perpetua/NewFlux invited me to join in over here. Looks interesting. Hope I don't completely stop working...

We happened to be doing intros over at the FMBB, so if you post/lurk over there, please excuse the repetition...

I'm Dave or David. I turned 30 this year. I live in SF with my girlfriend and two cats, Plum and Zephyr (I didn't name them...). I work in Sunnyvale, at Philips Components, designing Wireless Networking hardware. I got laid off from my last job (at ReplayTV) on 9/10 (!) of last year, and had three harrowing jobless months - the longest "vacation" since... I guess since I started kindergarten! I play keyboards for the Shimmer Kids (http://www.underpop.org), and I DJ (DJ name is DJI - my initials) for the group SpaceLounge (http://www.spacelounge.com). I grew up in Santa Cruz, CA, which I think contributes quite a bit to my lefty viewpoint. I went to college in Boston, at Tufts, and spent my Junior year in London (at King's College London), studying Math, Physics, and EE, while spending as much of my dad's money as possible on Pet Shop Boys CD-singles and early Prodigy and Future Sound of London stuff (BTW - anyone heard the new FSOL yet? I'm curious), and learning how to roll big spliffs. As for music, I mostly only buy house and breakbeat vinyl since I can get most of the stuff I want from the other genres online. And because I haven't been too thrilled with a lot of stuff from the past few years. Exceptions: Flaming Lips, The Shins. I grew up as a major Anglophile, listening to the Smiths, Cure, PSB, etc. In college, I became friends with Peter Green (who created DoubleAgent records after college), and he turned me on to indie pop (Small Factroy, Unrest, Lois, etc). Movies... I dunno. I hate going to movies in SF, so I haven't seen almost anything in the theaters in the last few years. Hm. I really liked Waking Life from last year, and Spy Kids was pretty kick-ass, especially if you can find a kid to bring (haven't seen Spy Kids 2). I've also become a bit of a TV watcher, thanks to my ReplayTV. If you don't have one, save your money - you won't regret it... I like reality shows, HBO (The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm), and of course, the Simpsons. I'm also a big fan of video games, even though most of my firends are "too old" (or have girlfriends) for them at this point. I smoke pot (understatement). I drink. I take drugs from time to time. I smoke cigarettes. I'm 6'3, and I have a small Silicon Belly. I think I'm a pretty easygoing guy, for the most part. I love to talk one-on-one with people, but I can be standoffish in groups. The phrase you'll hear from me most (I wish it wasn't) is "right on."

...and of course, the Simpsons.

If I were a bouncer at the door, I'd let you in. Welcome to Barbelith.

Hey Schwantz! It's great to have you over here. Feel free to jump in on a thread or two.

(Maybe you can convince Josh to come over here too...)

Pass this test and we'll let you in...

You know what would be *really* good? If we *all* did one of these threads! Then we wouldn't have to waste time finding out about each other, because we'd alread know. Let's to it!

This is the conversation, this is were we screw about. And god damn it we're haveing fun.
Sorry to any newbie who we have worried with our sillyness.

Pirate, definitely.

No ninja would willingly listen to the Pet Shop Boys. Neil Tennant walks on water, round our place. Fat Bob and the Cure bob along too.

Cats' names I like. Zzzephyr has a distinctive ring to it, I think, and we have our own lovely Plums here.

Hearty welcome to the Black Pig, schwantz! Come below decks and make yourself comfy. We have grog or Bacardi Breezers, and spilt seed, upon the ground, for Onan the Parrot. Just batten down the hatch on your way in.

Welcome, Schwantz! Don't let Haus hurt your feelings. He's a very cranky man, which is a big part of his appeal.

I will not try not to gush over you Shimmer Kids, but I will tell you that I like you alot.

The Spy Kids movies looked really really terrible to me, but now I will probably check them out of the library anyway.

Spy Kids is one of those movies where I wished I was a kid again. It had the ultimate fantasy where kids find out their "boring" parents are secret agents, and the kids get to join in... I would have gone NUTS over it when I was little.

Also, does Barbelith have space for files? I have a bunch of DJ sets MP3'd up, that I'd love to share with the group... Otherwise, just SoulSeek me (username:schwantz)

Thanks, everyone, for the warm welcome.

Yes, most of those are my sets. I think there are a couple of multi-dj mixes from parties...

Hey Shwantz, I regularly visit the west coast, Capitola and Aptos, in particular. I stay for two weeks at a time and never want to leave. The mountains are awesome and the weather is almost perfect.
But enough about the weather, spliffs and no comics?

No ninja would willingly listen to the Pet Shop Boys.

Whaaat?

I have stayed out of the whole pirate-ninja controversy until this moment, but now I must speak.

The Pet Shop Boys are way ninja.

Hi Shwantz. I've never heard the term "silicon belly" before but I dig it much.

Without getting too into the whole stupid ninja/pirate thing, I would have to concur that the writers of 'We All Feel Better In The Dark' are creatures of the night(life), ZoCher.

We're The Great Old Ones Now
08:01 / 16.08.02
That has to be the most comprehensive 'hello' in the history of the board. Cool. The times they are a-changin' - no longer do Barbies hang around trying to be as mysterious as possible and ending up as the charge of the Trenchcoat Brigade! No! Now we stand up and are counted! We have real names and locations in the real world.

Huzzah, Schwantz. (I'm going to translate that in my head as 'tail'. Otherwise the mental image I get is too outre...)

Deva, you are pretty much the founder of the ninja/pirate struggle. I think it kicked off as a result of one of your threads.

The Natural Way

Another newbie who proves that, if BANNING pulls in this many cool, new bods, it should become a bi-annual event.

Hello Schwartz. A Fluxfriend. Huzzah.

ONLY NICE THINGS

Why do people always assume I'm taking the piss?

D00D! I think it would be very cool indeed if we all did big "about me" posts, You know, "Je m'appelle Rachel, j'habite a Preston. Preston est une grand ville industrielle pres de Lancaster," and so on. I think there should be a separate thread about it, though.

Ganesh

Why do people always assume I'm taking the piss?

I think people frequently assume you're being facetious because the persona you project online - and, to a lesser extent, in the Real Life settings where we've met - is rather arch. Like Ray, The Man With The Sarcastic Voice, you sometimes seem trapped by other people's uncertain perceptions of you, particularly Whether You Mean It Or Not.

Blah.

I certainly think it might be a reasonable idea for someone to start a 'Welcome Newbies' thread rather than the present series of individual ones.

ONLY NICE THINGS
11:48 / 16.08.02
My thoughts exactly.

Well, all right, my thoughts exactly are probably more along the lines of "why are all these people inviting us to welcome them? We have no idea who they are. That's strange." But hey, that's just me.

aus
11:48 / 16.08.02
We could subvert an existing thread to that end, I think, rather than starting another thread. Or is that frowned upon here?

May I suggest The Joy of new members as an appropriate target of subversion?

Deva: The Pet Shop Boys are way ninja

Ha! Have you any evidence to support this your wishful thinking?

Let’s see:

I feel like taking all my clothes off
Dancing to the Rite of Spring

- I wouldn’t normally do this kind of thing

Only a pirate would do such a thing. Ninjas, naked, dancing to Stravinsky? Pull the other one.

The night, the stars
Our light shone through the dark
All the way back home at midnight
You were sleeping on my shoulder

- Liberation

A touching story of the love between a pirate and his parrot.

Come outside and feel the morning sun...
...Why do you want sit alone in gothic gloom
surrounded by the the ghosts of love
that haunt your room?
Somewhere there’s a different door
to open wide…

- Se a vida é

A pirate reaches out to a forlorn ninja and gently points out the error of his stealthy, deathly ways. This is otherwise known as psychological keelhauling.

And you are very daring to venture a contrary opinion to mine in a public place, Ganesh. There are so many ways that I could punish you for that infraction over the coming weekend...

Haus, Haus... they're just being polite...

Mind you, I see any off the fuckers walking out the door wi' 'video, then all bets are off.

Other than that... we welcome the newbies. (we only tell 'em about the asscandle once it's too late...)

Stoatie, you are obsessed with that candle. Put it away dear or you'll have someone's eye out!

Oh and welcome newbies! We're all as mad as hatters but it's a nice way to pass the time

Mourne Kransky
12:02 / 16.08.02
Why did hatters go mad though, angel? Was it the umplumbable depths of boredom which the millinery process entails? Was it having to touch all that felt [goosebumps at thge thought]? Used lots of aromatic glue maybe? Come on, tell me, tell me, I must know now! You put the thought into my head, so you really owe me some in-fill information.
