As mentioned in the 'One Song I Must Have' thread:

Larry records a track onto a blank tape/CD.

He sends it to Delores.

Delores records a second track.

She sends it to Butch.

Butch adds track 3 AND SO ON.

A good idea or a bad one? Anyone up for it? If so, do we go with the 'most important track to self' theme, another theme, or just follow with what would fit? I think the latter would make more sense. I also think the reciever should not know what's on the tape till they listen to it.

I like the "what would fit next" idea. I'm up fer it.

that sounds like fun - bit upset to be so early on, I only get to hear 3 good songs but let's do it. Mail me for address or whatever.

Sounds like a fantastic idea. Can we think of a way that anyone contributing gets a copy of the finished product?

Wonderful idea. I'm in. Promise to leave the horribly unfashionable music I like well out of it.

I'm in.

We should definitely have a process whereby if someone can't slap the next song on the mix, the next in line goes.

Nomination for a theme: autumn - from straw men to haymaking, november elections to the first bite of winter's chill....

bio k9
03:09 / 04.08.02
I think we should let the theme establish itself.

Might end up a bit Chinese Whispers...

Our Lady of The Two Towers
14:38 / 04.08.02
I'm in, though perhaps we need some way of doing it so it's not immediately obvious who's chosen which track, at least until there's been an opportunity to hear the whole thing. I also agree with letting a theme develop naturally. I'd even be willing to start, providing my hi-fi hasn't actually died now. (Glares at it suspiciously)

The 'online mixtapes/mixtape corpse' idea was basically an attempt to do this without having to actually physically send the forms from person to person - the threads for all of these (some finishedm, some not) should still be around if you have a dig...

Thanks for the replies, everyone. The more I think about this, the more daft it seems - but anyway... I've made some comments on how we might proceed, with a view to keeping everything as straightforward as possible. Comments and other ideas welcome.

Theme
There's no reason we can't have several tapes on the go at once, with different themes. I'm going to kick off with a simple no-theme, 'whatever fits' tape and assume that those who have responded so far will be in on it (PM me if not). If others want to start other tapes, then I suggest they announce the fact on this thread and anyone who wants to join in sends them a PM.

grant's 'autumnal' tape sounds good. Someone might also like to do a proper 'exquisite corpse' type thingy where no one actually knows what goes before their track - you just get a tape in the post which is already wound to the end of the last song, bung yr track straight on and send it off. Would require enormous self-discipline not to rewind and listen, and would probably make a bloody dreadful tape, but, erm...

Format
Best left to whoever starts the thing. Tape probably allows for more players, but CDs can be duplicated and distributed without loss of sound quality. Preferences?

Order
The simplest thing would be to go with this here thread order (so Bio K9 will do track 2, Deric track 3 etc). But what about international posting? We could end up with it having to go backwards and forwards between the UK, US, Aus etc several times - it might be sensible to group by continent, so that all the UK contributers do their bit first, then on to Europe, then the US or whatever. I'm not fussed myself, but you lot might think otherwise, in which case say so asap.

When it's finished
How do we all get copies? Erm, any ideas?! The usual method is the 'tape tree', where whoever ends up with the tape/cd sends copies to three others, who send copies to three others etc.

Thoughts?

Sounds good, if you're willing to organise it, why doesn't everyone interested PM you with names and countries? I personally would think it would be quite cool to have it potentially zipping around the world, being an audio tape it shouldn't be too much, but if you get, say, all the Brits to do one first, then it could make it sound disjointed in terms of focus.

Saveloy
15:13 / 06.08.02
F*** it, I like the idea of it zipping all over the world too, so let's go with that. I'll start it tonight, get the thing moving, and we can sort out the problem of distributing the completed article later on.

Count me in...and I hereby solemnly swear in the name of whatever deity happens to be passing by at this moment that I will not try and de-rail the tape by recording Bavarian tuba music.

Old brown-eye is back
23:09 / 07.08.02
So, how are addresses being organised? Are we PMing Mr Saveloy or what? (Can we indeed have no Bavarian tuba music, and no Afghan nose flute orchestras either.)

Saveloy
05:32 / 08.08.02
Addresses

Each participant needs just one address, and that's the person after them on the list, so I suggest everyone PMs the relevant bod once they're ready to send the tape. If you don't get a response within a reasonable time, then move on to the next in the list.

Managed to kick off at last, with a track that should leave the field fairly wide open. It's in the post, hurtling towards Bio K9 as we, er, speak.

Here's the running order (plenty of room for more, btw):

Saveloy
Bio K9
Deric Holloway
Mr Illmatic
Ruth Gordon
Jack the Bodiless
JunejUnejuNejunE
grant
My Misheard Lada of the Flowers
Rizla
Grey Area
Flyboy
Remorse
E. Randy Dupre

Jack the Bodiless:

"Promise to leave the horribly unfashionable music I like well out of it."

*Slaps Jack's face, holds him vice-like by the ears and stares fiercely into his eyes*. F*** fashion! If it fits, shove the bastard on. We'll get into all sorts of twisty, angst-related unpleasantness if we start worrying about approval on those grounds. Do it, Jack, do it!

Tape no. 2

As long as everyone is happy about it, there's going to be a second tape doing the rounds. It will start with Remorse and go through the list in reverse order. Anyone who wants to be excused from this exercise should present a note, signed by a parent or guardian, to their House Master before morning break. That is all.

Looking forward to it. Just to clarify- is there a theme for either of these, are we going with Grant's 'Autumn' idea, or just doing whatever we want?

whatever you want. whatever fits with the tape, i'd imagine.

That could make for a pretty scary tape..

I say just put on a track which the weird mix tape voodoo says will sound absolutely brilliant following the previous one..

Managed to kick off at last, with a track that should leave the field fairly wide open.

Indeed.

Just got it this weekend, will take a couple days to decide what to add and a couple more to find a working cassette recorder. And get Derics address.

As for the theme: Im going to put down something that sounds like it follows the songs (er, music) before it.

remorse
12:14 / 25.08.02
Tape two is in the mail and on it's way to Fly. I sent it Saturday morning and the gent behind the counter said to expect about a week transit.
