I just volunteered in another thread but thought I should say so here too - happy to help out, particularly in Books, Conversation and Creation.

could tom appoint a benevolent vice-dictator? (I mean vice as in side-kick, not vice as in "he who tells us what our vices must be.")

Two or three benevolent vice-dictators would probably work better - old lags he knows personally, are already mods and can be trusted to look after the farmstead while he is away.

All we really need is sufficient moderators with the same powers as they have at present. Provided the moderators for each of the fora have a fairly regular presence here, there will not be a problem keeping Barbelith clean and running should Tom decide to take a leave of absence to have a stress-free ponder.

As to any powers necessary which current moderation levels do not allow - we're only talking short term here. The more problems we set in the way of any potential leave of absence ("well, you can't leave until we've sorted a new structure for caretaking the board while you're gone"), the less likely it is to happen. Of course, it's only a suggestion, but I think it's worthwhile. I think Tom could do with a bit of distance from problems with Barbelith, both real and perceived and every possible permutation in between.

Sorry if I don't offer more input, it's just that you guys have it all covered up already. I'm following these discussions with interest. I'd be happy to help in The Conversation or The Switchboard.

If we do need vice dictators, I'd like to nominate Grant (our grant) for the position. He's reasonable, not ax-grindy or knee-jerky, he's been around like, forever, and has proven his intelligence and insight over and over again. Of everyone, I think he's the most trustworthy to take on more responsibilities. Assuming he wants them. Which he might not.

grant

I wouldn't mind, but man... I already get occasional people thinking I'm the *other* Grant. I can imagine the fun if I was more, umm, official.

You could always change your handle to Grant (not Grant).

The Greenlanders were a person or group of people who inhabited Barbelith for a while and proposed a rather curious cosmology. It was notoriously difficult to get a straight answer from any of them, as too much truth would apparently have warped our fragile minds.

They were odd. They were occasionally irritating. They were not really trolls, as such. At least, they weren't always. It's a little hard to establish just who was whom when.

Sort of Barbelith's very own collection of proto-Ickes.

There is actually a level above moderator at the moment and that level is called Administrator and that's what I am. This essentially means I'm a moderator in every forum at once, so I can add my voice to approve or disprove any moderator action on the board. The idea being that if there is any slack to take up I can do it. At the moment, being in an admin gives little in the way of additional power beyond that, so I would *consider* letting someone else - or maybe two other people have that ability in the short term until we figure out whatever next stage... Would anyone actually be intrested in that...

Sure, if it'd help.

Yeah, sure.

Everyone wants to be god. I see how this is working...

Trijhaos
11:34 / 02.08.02
You misunderstand. Nobody wants to be god. Everybody who's volunteered just wants to help you and Barbelith and if by helping a few people have to take on some extra responsibility, then so be it.

Of course, there's always the possibility that the people who've volunteered have gotten drunk on the power they currently have and want more .

You need someone who's not going to get a serious shoulder-chip from having the extra authority, but at the same time someone who'll be willing to make their decisions and stand by them. (On reflection, I'd either get said chip or be too skittish to be useful) Figuring out who that is is up to you; for the moment, people are just responding to the question of who'd be willing to. Does Cal have time to take on the job or would he want to?

Can I be God too? I want a throne of skulls...

Seriously - I recommend 'Nesh and grant, if you want to devolve responsibility in that manner. Ain't no one else I'd trust with the board... Nick's just too damn hysterical and inarticulate (and there's little in the way of interest or original thought in his posts).

I'd second Jack the B's recommendations for 'Nesh and grant as alternative admins, should you think the idea has legs. Or a trunk.

Yeah what they said, thirded and other words to that effect.
Grant, Ganesh, if you're bad I'll be there in the tanks climbing the steps of the presidential palace, so no messin.
Right thats them told

ONLY NICE THINGS
08:51 / 05.08.02
I think Grant, Ganesh and Mordy would be good options. There are a number of other other possibilities, including myself, Nick, JtB, Expressionless, Jack F, Flyboy and KCC, about whom I have reservations but who could probably do a job at a pinch...

My ethereal namesake saith: Can I be God too? I want a throne of skulls...

They're really not that comfortable, I've found.

...

And Tannhauser, I have my reservations about the idea myself, mainly stemming from the fact that I haven't as much spare time as I think I'd need to be a really good administrator—but I'll do whatever I can to help: if that's what it takes, that's what it takes. And I should hope that, by this point, I've proven myself relatively trustworthy...

ONLY NICE THINGS
12:54 / 05.08.02
Jack: Indeed - amount or regularity of online time is one of the main reasons why some people, all of whom have contributed noble and good service as moderators, may not be ideal administrators. Personally, I would make all the current mods administrators and have done with it, but if we are talking about a couple of people then obviously how often someone is online is a big question.

Jack The Bodiless
19:02 / 05.08.02
Yeah... but it's not necessarily the case that they'd need to be online for half the day... really checking mod tasks, PMs/emails, and skimming the board for shite once of twice a day would do, especially if there were more than one of you administrating, in addition to the moderators... although I could be underestimating. Tom? How long do you spend here? How often? And... what do you wear while you're doing it?

Personally, I think I'm a bit too spiky and goon-like to be given that kind of power. And I think I'd like it too much. I really do want a throne of skulls you know, O Scary Namesake... I have plenty of pillows.

Adding my vote for La Carnival, though, in addition to grant and Ganesh...

Oh, and Jack Fear. That should go without saying, really, though. Safe pair o' hands, our Mr. Fear...

Tom Coates
20:15 / 05.08.02
Ok - I've started it off with grant and Ganesh - who general consensus seems to indicate are pretty good and trustworthy people. We'll see how that goes and extend further if necessary. If either of them have any questions about the new powers that they now have, then they should feel free to pm me.
