NEW YORK (CNN) -- Queens police confirm an aircraft crashed Monday in the Far Rockaways neighborhood of the New York City borough.

The spokesman could not confirm the type of plane but said it crashed in the Rockaways at 122nd Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

WCBS-TV reported that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it was an American Airlines 767 presumably on approach to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The station showed pictures of a huge plume of smoke.

NEW YORK, Nov. 12 — At least four homes were
ablaze Monday after an American Airlines 767 aircraft crashed near the heavily populated Rockaway Beach area of New York City, not far from John F. Kennedy International Airport, NBCNews reported on Monday. The Airbus-300, Flight 587, was heading to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

DETAILS WERE sketchy although cameras in
Manhattan showed a thick plume of smoke billowing high above Queens. The local NBC affiliate, WNBC, reported that thecrash occurred in the Bel Harbor section of theRockaways at around 9:15 a.m. ET. JFK and La Guardia Airport, which is also based inQueens, were shut after the accident. An eyewitness told WNBC that he saw a wing of theplane on fire after takeoff from JFK.

As I switch on the TV, the beeb are asking if the plane was shot down by the US. They're asking whether it could have been terrorism and talking about the security holes in the system: and talking about the possibility of people taking on the crew barehanded.

No word on casualties. Theplane can hold 250-300 people potentially. It's a suburban area. All local airports have been closed.

Fur buildings on fire. American Airlines 767: just left JFK for the Domnican Republic when it crashed. No confirmation of terrorist activity.

That's all I can get off the telly: moving to chatrooms.

This originally posted to news update thread: I'll stick with this one now cos it's smaller.

BBC say the plane was leaving NY for the Domenican Republic - lots of fuel on board.

Does it even matter whether it was brought down? Rank and file US is never going to believe that, and this will simply pull the country into line behind W even more.

Sorry. Analysis later.

2 AIR CRASH CITY
Experts said trading was highly volatile as investors scrambled to sell shares in their concern about the repercussions of the crash.
Tom Hougaard, trader at bookies Financial Spreads, said: "It is complete volatility (on the markets).
"Is it new terrorism or a plane crash? Has the terror campaign started again? There is volatility all over the place. People are worried sick and want to get out of their positions at any price - they just want to get out of their investments."

someone just emailed me this:

quote:Evening Standard has:

Passenger jet crashes in New York

An American Airlines plane carrying up to 361 passengers has crashed into
buildings in New York City.

Up to 361 passengers were reported to be on board the American Airlines
Flight 587, an Airbus A300, leaving JFK airport for Santo Domingo.

Witnesses have said they heard a loud noise before the plane plummeted to
the ground.

All airports in the New York area have now been closed.

The plane - the same type of aircraft that crashed into the first World
Trade Center tower on September 11 - crashed in Queens at 9.15am local time.

Buildings can be seen to be on fire and smoke is billowing above the city.

It is not yet known if the crash was a terrorist incident.

New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is heading to the scene of the crash and a
command centre has been set up nearby.

The incident comes two months and one day after the World Trade Center was
destroyed by two hijacked planes.

American Airlines have just completed their programme of fitting steel doors
to cockpits of all their 767s.

the plane involved is apparently an A320 or A300 airbus, not a 737 as initially reported. Not6 that that makes a great deal of difference...

Re-Set
12:14 / 12.11.01
says 246 passengers were reserved for the flight, plus 9 crew members. Fighter planes in the area weren't "vectored in" befor eit went down, so it probably all happened pretty quick.

Oh God, this is all we need. This is all NEW YORK needs.

I don't think it would be a terrorist thing. Too soon after takeoff, unless there was a bomb - and the Dominican Republic? I don't know.

Fuckety fuckety fuck fuck FUCK!!!

On the 'bright' side, no one in my office here is excessively freaking out. But people that we know outside the city keep calling to ask if we're alright. I guess New Yorkers have learned to deal with "routine" tragedy. That or we're all on anti-anxiety medicine.

The fact that it crashed so soon after takeoff kind of discounts the kind of thing that happened sept 11th. But, hey it could be a bomb.

Some reports suggest the engine exploded/separated from the 'plane before the crash.

Also unusual for a pilot to down the 'plane on a residential area - they usually try to bring them down, if they have to, over water, apparently. And the weather conditions would be favourable for a crash landing somewhere safe - low winds, clear skies...

And, as has been mentioned, today is veterans' day in America - and the plane came down before the markets opened and it's just prior to the start of Ramadan.

All of which, could be pure coincidence, of course, of course...

Virgin news just mentioned the engine loss in their update, also. Looks like a crash on takeoff; the Beeb's reportage seems to be pouring scorn on this with expert quotation, but it seems to not point to terrorism, from all I can glean.

Mayor was just on the box saying that the engine came down in a separate site to the rest of the plane, eg came off in midair. And some eyewitnesses reported seeing an explosion before it crashed.

these types of planes are designed with the engines on the bottom of the wings so if there is an engine failure/ fire the bolts will give way and drop the engine so the whole plane doesn't catch fire.

Of course, this occurs on the day the results of the News constortiums recount of the Florida ballots was finally released...

quote:The study concluded that Bush would have won any count that included undervotes (reminder: undervotes are ballots that contain a single invalid or unclear mark). But Gore would have won a vote that included overvotes(ballots that included marks for more than one presidential candidate). The catch: Gore's lawyers never pushed for overvotes to be counted. (For those who have-happily-tossed these terms from their minds, the LAT includes aglossary.) The report was originally going to be released September 16, but was delayed after the World Trade Center attacks

Conspiracy! I think not...

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/11/12/nyregion/12WIRE-PLANE.html

From the New York Times:

All metro area airports -- Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark -- were closed following the crash, in Rockaway, Queens. The Office of Emergency Management said all bridges and tunnels in the city were closed except to emergency vehicles.

Planes were being diverted, and Delta Air Lines spokeswoman Peggy Estes said the airline was working to account for all its planes.

The mayor canceled his morning events and headed to the scene.

One eyewitness reported debris falling from sky, and told the Fox News Channel four homes were on fire.

(Note that I'm ignoring the conspiracy theory *sigh*)
