Since the hate thread has been sidetracked first by an almighty Haus/Planet slashtastic bitchathon, and then by the power of Moz, let's take a different tack, where we can remember the bitchery of yesteryear and, who knows, perhaps start a few new fights all of our very own. Your own feuds, feuds with others, you name it...but be aware that claiming "victory" makes you WEAK. Nobody wins in a feud. Everyone loses.

I'll kick off with the Haus of Chastened Blushes vs Cameron Stewart, which is a favourite because, well, because it had a happy ending. A bit of ragging about CS's status as the fanciable comic artist, combined with a disparity in the ages of consent in Canada and the UK led to Cameron becoming understandably rather miffed at the perceived (and, just to make this clear, utterly and totally never intended or in any way alleged) suggestion that he liked 'em young. A series of rather snarky emails followed, and there was definite simmering resentment.

Then, in one of the good things that came out of the incredibly lengthy Barbe-feuds threads, the snark once again broke cover, but something wonderful happened. Both sides examined their entrenched positions, realised how they were being trapped by the silted-up structures of resentment, and in a lenghty, quite emotional exchange were reconciled. I admitted that I had flown off the handle and tried to work out why, the roots of the misunderstanding were uncovered, CS was understanding and sympathetic, and I now feel the most enormous goodwill whenever I see him post. It was just so....lovely, and such a demonstration that the snark need not be eternal, and that calming down and talking things through is often the best idea ever. That, and his X-Men character sketches rocked hard.

I'm actually quite sad that we lost that thread when the board went down.

Anyone else? Hpw about Ganesh and the Greenland Posse, or GRIM and Reidcourchie in tag-team action against the PC Brigade, or Lyra and the armies of fey indie? Which knock-down drag-outs have given you the most pleasure?

When Laila started posting from, and I quote, "Ganesh's womb" I got the big giggles. Really sick and perverse (just the way a young prunce likes it): excellent.

My favourite one that I personally was involved in was a long-drawn out affair with one poster called Sirius, who I haven't seen around for a while, at least not under that name. It began as a discussion of the local press and descended into petty slaps with Sirius calling me a "tool of the state", boasting about how many tattoos he had, and reliving his 'Nam experiences. Apparently. Then he sent a load of nasty PMs or e-mails to Tom, and this one too had the best possible conclusion: Sirius fucked off.

Regarding the Haus/Cameron spat, my favourite bit of that was me and Ganesh "gambolling around like two midget jesters at a mediaeval court", throwing in (largely ignored) quips and one-liners as an undercurrent to the main event, which I enjoyed immensely.

I think that was Sirius again...he also famously decided that the (reasonably common, pre-reboot) deletion by the system of his suit was an attempt to silence his controversial views about the media. A good sign of a top-class idiot was always when they responded to the system glitching and making their suit inaccesible by immeidately registering a new suit, logging in and screaming about how they would NOT BE SILENCED.

Following Haus' theme of conflict and reconciliation, when I first joined the board there was a fair bit of stuff about the mayday protests in London. Whereupon non-violent zenarchist (flyboy?) and I had something of a contretemps, only to eventually find common ground and be nice to one another. It was one of the first things I liked about Barbelith, that we were able to argue without resorting to insults and stuff.
I later called runt a berk, who responded by calling me a dillon [didn't understand what it meant then...]. So I sort of fell into the bitch thing myself, and I flagellate myself for it.
Oh, and Haus once pulled me up on a terminology misuse, but I ran away and hid for I KNEW I WAS WRONG.

It's admittedly a while since I last got out the ol' mirror and speculum but I think Laila's still down there...

Actually, Laila and I reached an understanding of sorts, largely because she was able to rise to the 'Do Ask, Do Tell' challenge of summarising her beliefs and how she arrived at them. While not exactly agreeing with her, I could more easily see how she'd arrived at certain conclusions. She became more human somehow.

But hush, what precognitive light from yonder window breaks? Something in the air tells me at least one of the Apocaloids is loitering in the Barbe-wings, like some Lovecraftian entity, waiting to return...

&GOD come down if you're really there, well you're the one who claims to ca-are...

I don't think I've ever out and out fought with people, I just ended up being sarcastic when the Greenland posse or Knodge opened their mouths. I do remember someone once called me a 'precious Indie lover' in a music thread on the grounds that I said the only track on the Avalanches album I liked was 'Frontier Psychiatry'...

I liked my fight with Nick about fanfiction. Because it spawned much thinking in my head. And because someone-or-other listed it as a classic barbemoment somewhere and I felt like I was in the Secret Barbeclique.

I didn't like the Marriage Wars, though. Possibly I should just have cut my losses on that one and really let rip here, instead of trying to remain civil, getting incredibly frustrated and bending RL ears about it non-stop for a week.

I also find it frustrating when myself & another poster I respect (usually one of the theorybitches) seem to be just missing each other - as if all our interactions were haunted by the really good fight we should be having, but we never quite manage to home in on the point we want to fight about.

Oh, and I just wanted to share my total over-investment in this place (even though I know I'm not here that much): on the first day of the 'people who hate people' thread I dreamt about it. Cherry Bomb, Dread Pirate Crunchy and Rosa had all joined forces to post about how crap I am - in a really "more-in-sorrow-than-in-anger" way, which made it worse ("Oh, that Deva: someone should really tell her that everyone here hates her. We hate to be the ones to do it, but... at least if she knew she could stop wasting her time here").

I should get out more.

A-fucking-men. My favourite feud was the one when I was new on the board and I got in a spat with a chap named Stephen, aka Ghost Doctor-- purely because we shook and made up afterwards and when I met him he turned out to be a lovely bloke.

Trust me, Deva, it was a dream. Would never happen! You're fab!

Though I am quite flattered to be lumped in with Rosa and Crunchy in Deva's subconcious...

While it's on my mind, I feel that I should mention that I still feel badly about oh-so-cleverly rebuffing Haus during a recent huff with a "shut the everloving fuck up", if I recall correctly. It was surly and unbecoming and I really don't like being like that with anyone. Apologies, Haus, and hopefully no hard feelings. I will admit that you rankle me from time to time, but I have a great deal of respect for you and I hope to someday win my way into your heart...

Oh, just look at the state of me. And I told myself I wasn't going to cry.

The 'Are The Strokes Sexist?' thread. Where Flux tried to persuade us all that there was 'nothing wrong with being sexy' despite Spinal Tap having been referenced several times before, during and afterwards.

But, no, we didn't shake hands and make up afterwards. We still venge for one another in a most unbecoming way. Well, I do, anyway.

Ooops - I quite forgot about that. We'd already covered this. But yes, teh amin thing about the marriage wars was for me the surreal nature of the exchanges, as the cordite smoke cleared and people wandered past, giving you their potted biographies. Other than that they were pretty much par.

So, to change the subject...

Dao Jones and Morocco Mole on why people dislike America. One of the all-time greats for when an incredibly long and vigorously argued thread ends not just with the two parties having not changed their views (a pretty common occurrence), but actually pretty much having not changed their starting sentences.

Thus:

MM: Why do people hate America? We have given the world peace, stability, financial security and culture.

DJ: What about x, y and z, where this was not the case?

MM: Yes, but why do people hate America?

DJ: Well, x, y and z.

MM: But what is it that makes people hate America?

DJ: X! Y! Frickin' Z!

And so on.

I think the only change was that MM altered his position to take into account the fact that, yes, he wasn't exactly overjoyed about the recent attempt to destabilise the elected government of Ecuador, but notwithstanding...it was like watching two industrial cooling towers at different ends of the country wrestling.

There he goes again, attempting to shoehorn a reference to 'White Knight Syndrome' into the 'who are you' story. I recall him trying that at the time, and everyone disagreeing with him then, too.

I got that one too. It's one of my many current reservations about this place - y'know, I express an opinion and immediately get accused of hitting on someone. (Jeez, Jack, we agree. Now, don't feel sexually threatened, y'hear?)
