I disagree. Not with the assertion this thread's a bad idea, but with the reasons. If there's ever any general consent in this forum as to a specific genre or artist which/who has no redeeming qualities then the whole place may as well get pulled down.

'Cause that's contrary to what I thought we were supposed to be here for.

True enough. It's also contrary to what music's supposed to be here for. Catering to all tastes, no matter how lame the self-appointed cognoscenti may believe those tastes to be. I'm thinking our reasons aren't all that different.

But isn't good just getting things of your chest once in a while.

Humble Pi kindly offered up The Lighthouse Family for universal hatred. I am Jack's argument going down in flames.

Oh, fuck you. I'll post wherever I like, and I'll explain why I don't like what I don't like, whenever I like. Presumably debate and disagreement didn't get made illegal here just because you're 'having fun'?

I own The Lighthouse Family's 'Ocean Drive' single. Got a lot of fond memories associated with that song. I am little brother's argument disappearing in a puff of smoke.

Y'know, I dig a lot of the music here being offered up as universally hated. I think Poion and W.A.S.P. are really fucking cool and put on good stage shows. And I really dig Europe; "The Final Countdown" was the first tape I ever owned, and I still play it to this day. I absolutely love 70's classic rock like Led Zepplin, and the Rolling Stones have quite a few albums that are better than "Let It Bleed" ("Exhile On Mainstreet"?). I also really dig Supertramp, and Queen (I know they haven't been mentioned yet, but there seemed to be a lot of animosity towards them before). I think ELO is kinda lame, but I don't despise them (now ELP...). But I do hate John Mellencamp. With a passion.

Your never going to find music that universally hated, you might find music that universally hated by Barbelith, but the fact that you've heard of all these bands means that someone enjoys the music and gets pleasure from listening to it. For every type of music you hate someone somewhere will be singing along to it. Which is a good thing.

Man, what about Kenny G? Pat Methany? John Tesh? Kitaro? Yanni? Can anyonoe here justify this watered-down, new age treacle? To quote Henry Rollins, "DEATH TO FALSE BEBOP!!"

Defend those.

Like the Bear said - somebody likes them. Not you, and not me, but someone listens to them and buys them... or they'd be extinct.

Let's be clear here - I'm not against an expression of opinion (I absolutely hate Nirvana, for example) - it's more the equation of personal taste with an objective value judgement (I absolutely hate Nirvana. Therefore they are utter shite, and I am free to ridicule them, their music, and any fans of their music that I encounter).

There are those artists who, for whatever reason, have landed on the 'naff pile' - received wisdom has it that they are awful/boring/derivative/dated/laughable/pretentious/or just plain shit. This gives people already comfortable with equating taste with value a safety buffer to slag these bands and their fans without worry of critical comeback, or any fear that they'll have to defend their judgements. That's lazy, thickheaded criticism, the kind that you'll see on knucklehead message boards all over the interwebnet.

Aside from his hairstyle, the only criticisms I ever hear of Kenny G, for example, is that he's horrifyingly bland. That's not objective fact, and I know at least one Kenny G fan who'd disagree with the statement very strongly. You are not his audience. Doesn't mean he doesn't have one.

Like I said. Music does not constitute a hatecrime. There's an element of sneering, and an attitude of superiority, in this thread, that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

That and someone abused ELO. Jeff Lynne rocks.

Jeff Lynne may have rocked, but for a man who spent his entire career trying to make Abbey Road, the only thing of his I liked was Wilbury related.

Bear said what I was thinking: attempting to find universally hated music in the commercial pool is a logical fallacy, that's what makes this thread so odd. The companion thread to this one ("Music that's universally loved") has at least a leg to stand on, if only for the three minutes before someone shoots you down. I liked that thread because it seemed to be about people making themselves vulnerable, which is more lovable and more fun. Maybe I'll go bump that thread.

Apologies for any nasty taste started by this thread. When I saw the universally loved thread, I had to start this one, just to see.
