..sorry I couldn't resist. Although I'm sure she has fans here, I can't stand Macy Gray. I don't know why but I her voice makes me cringe and think of phlegm.

What music has no redeeming qualities? Billy Ray Cyrus, Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, for starters.

I heard a rumour that David Gray has had his middle name changed by deed poll to 'Fucking' to try and stop people shouting it at him as an insult.

Right now I doubt if anyone here can say anything good about Spot and SST albums he "produced." I was just reading about the possibility of re-mastering Husker Du's back catalog and it pisses me off that he fucked up "New Day Rising", perhaps irrevocably.

I know that there are lots of people who would disagree (maybe not here), but I think that Steely Dan, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor are about as soulless as it gets. And soulless music is despicable and completely unnecessary, IMHO.

I believe I've said it before on this board, but I really. Really. Hate. Jimmy Buffett.

If anyone can justify the existence of John "Cougar" Mellencamp (other than on the obvious gorunds that mullets are funny) then I'm waiting right here with some heavy weaponry that'll settle the dispute...

I will second the Buffett. He's absolutely horrid.

By way of thread rot, I have a funny story about The Coug (as we've taken to calling Mellencamp). As you may or may not know, I live in Bloomington, IN, and The Coug lives very nearby, indeed. Seems a good friend of mine's brother (who seems to have an awful lot of traffic accidents) ran into The Cougster's car w/his own not too long ago. The Coug got out, examined the damage, and told my friend's brother that he'd forget about the accident if my friend's brother promised not to ask for an autograph. As if he had any intention of doing so in the first place. The Coug is nothing if not full of his mulleted self.

A friend of mine's late father once got a pint bought for him by Engelbert Humperdinck as an apology for the boorish drunken behaviour of Tom Jones...

back to the point- one (more) word for yez.

Are we defining the limits of our universe, here, as the Barbelith Music forum?

I quite like Travis.

Simply Red. Supertramp. Toto. Mike & the Mechanics. Jameriqoi (or however he spells his wretched name).

This is just too easy.

I think Annie Lennox's solo album is probably the most absurdly hateful thing my ears have ever been subjected to, though..

abba, elo. i force myself to like all the music i instinctively hate. in recent months i've programmed myself to enjoy neil young, the smiths and the pixies, all of whom i've had big problems with in the past. i would do prison time for abba or elo though.

I am to the point where I hate 90% of baby boomer "Classic Rock" simply because it never EVER goes away. Led Zepplin wasn't so good that we need to hear them every hour on a Clear Channel Station 25 years after their last album. I could happily live without ever hearing "Cocaine" by Clapton again, all of the Rolling Stones's stuff except for the Let It Bleed album, the Fucking $150 a ticket Eagles, or any of the other bands that are played on classic rock stations.

They aren't classic. They are OLDIES, but the Baby Boomers who control the radio media don't want THIER music to be considered old.

Screw that.

It's over 30 years old and SOUNDS over 30 years old.

It's been played into the ground. Takin' Care of Business never EVER needs to be played on the radio, in a commercial or even as bumper music ever again.

I don't know if this stuff is universally hated, but in Minneapolis, there are more "classic rock" stations than other stations PUT TOGETHER, and it makes me feel like I am living in someone's Big Chill hell.

okay, i have to put the Dave Matthews Band up against the wall here. they/he should be universally hated. they/he should! but they/he aren't/isn't, and in some colleges in america it is actually compulsory to worship them/him with strange rituals. or so i've heard anyway.

i mean, does anyone on the barb' actually like them/him?

you know, Id never heard much from jimmy buffet so he was pretty safe from my hatred back inna day. however, a bookstore I worked for had a big hurrah to promote the release of his newest book. complete with giant "margaritaville" poster. and leis. and a constant loop of one of his cds...or was it more than one? it sounded like "cheeseburger in paradise", over and over and over again, maddeningly repetitious

Jimmy guested on "Kermit the Frog: Unpigged". He can therefore do no wrong. On the other hand, I've got a copy of MJ's "Dangerous" somewhere around here...

"It's like startin' over, and that's alright with us," enthused singer/songwriter Fran Healy, "because the philosophy of Travis is it's better to think you're shit than you're it, cuz usually when you think you're it, you're shit."

---

sometimes, though, Fran, when you think you're shit, you're shit. Because you are.

AAARRGGGHHH!!! First I started to write a post defending all the music I like that's being slagged here. Then I gave up and started to write a post slagging all the music I hate that's being defended here or in the "universally loved" thread. Then I realized this whole thing is futile and I gave the hell up. And that's my final word on this thread and the one which spawned it. "Is there any?" NO!

I like Jimmy Buffet, and I am not ashamed.

Though admittedly, maybe I should be.

Still, last year I went to a Jimmy Buffet concert and had a blast. Of course, the people I went with really made it fun, but all the parties in the parking lot were fabulous.

Jimmy Buffett is what it is.

I second Macy Grey hatred, however. And David Grey hatred as well.

Eddie FUCKING Money. After all these years, I still despise that fucker. And we haven't even touched upon Heavy Metal yet. Poison? W.A.S.P.? Stryper? All you in the UK never had to be exposed to this dreck, but while y'all were being riddled w/ Rick Astley, I was saturated with terrible poodle-hair faux Metal.

Well, we were exposed to the sound of one arm drumming for a while in the mid/late eighties. We also had to suffer Europe during the same period.

And Starship. And Roxette. And so on...

Orr: Jimmy guested on "Kermit the Frog: Unpigged". He can therefore do no wrong.

I have a copy of John Denver's 'Muppet Christmas' LP at home, but that's still no excuse for him.

I think The Coug and Phil Collins win.

Hi peeps
It's a bit off topic but on the subject of Phil Collins, there was a baleric remix of "Something in the air tonight" that gained huge popularity in early acid house daze (sorta 90, 91).I kid you not. I remember hugging strangers while dancing to it at The 4 Aces in Dalston. How's that for a weird musical memory for my first post?

I HATE threads like this. You people can be so fucking superior sometimes, it's actually nauseating.

Hey, here's the music I hate! Bob Marley! The Chemical Brothers! Prince/squiggle! Etc. But then I excuse myself because I don't feel the need to attach a value judgement to my personal tastes...

Off to listen to Billy Joel, Einsturzende Neubauten, Van Halen and Tom Waits and marvel at the fact that NONE of them are actually hatecrimes.

Gah...
