That was the plan, yes. Encourage people to think about what actually mattered to them before they posted - thus, in principle, increasing the level of debate...

Ierne, or whoever it was that was querying the 'seasonal' nature of Barb, that's very much been my experience of it... there is a summer slowdown effect.

Well, as I said before, everyone has different posting habits, different places they prefer to hang out, and different amounts of time they can spend online at different points of the day. When I'm at work I'm not online, and check in when I get home... I'm not going to come anywhere near my posting limit on most weekdays. At the weekends, I'm usually online for longer. Of course, I'm not going to bother staying on the board for that length of time if I can't contribute because I've reached my posting limit (hypothetically).

My main point is that you shouldn't police these things. I know it's only a brief experiment, but it shouldn't need tinkering with the board's infrastructure to force people to do things.Just because the new software allows more creative playing about doesn't immediately allow the necessity to do so... just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should, you know? My feeling would be that in an area like Barbelith, if just one person feels it's cramping their style, that's reason enough to turn it off...

I think that statements pretty full of assumptions about what Barbelith is and what Barbelith should be - assumptions that I may not agree with, and assumptions that a lot of other people on the board might not agree with. We've had this conversation several times before over a lot of different functionality, but the main crux of it comes down to quality versus quantity. Board software is always implicated in the kind of conversations people can have on it. The old software made certain types of conversation very easy and others very difficult - but we had no control over which conversations we wanted to be easy... The new software allows us to choose. To stay with the restrictions of the old on the basis that they've worked so far seems to me to be completely against the spirit of this place. I'd be interested to know how many times you've collided with the barriers anyway... If it's making you think slightly more before posting, but has yet to be an inconvenience to you, then I'd say it's really worked...

Yes, Tom, but equally yr posting limit idea is loaded w/ assumptions about what barbelith should be blah, blah, that loads of people might not agree with.....blah.

I actually think Jack's assumptions are the more inclusive of the two.

I admit I was dubious when I first hit the "Nyahh! You're out of posts, blabbermouth!" screen. However I've since found the fifteen-post limit to be like a flattering yet revealing garment, allowing me to show off my best attributes whist containing some of the wobbly bits.

Bumping this up to ask Tom if the posting limits are still in place?

As it has become apparent that they are, is there any chance of a lil' counter, perhaps in the 'Logged In As...' box to tell us how many posts we're currently able to post? There were several times during the week when I couldn't post anything because I didn't realise that this had come back on.

And how come we can't post in this forum if we've used up our posts? I thought 'Help and Policy' was supposed to be exempt.

Nope - nothing is exempt at the moment. However after the first week I dropped the limit back to 25 or so messages a day. I'll drop it back still further if people think that's a good idea...

That sounds okay for now I would have thought...

I think I'm still at ten posts per day limit. It caught me last week a few times.

Yeah, I was waiting for an opportunity to point this out too...

Yeah, one time about a week or so back I got hit with a limit of (I think) about thirty... now it seems to be ten again. Not really a problem, actually I think it's a good idea... it's just that if knowing the limit's there's s'posed to make us think more about what we post, then knowing the limit's there may be kind of handy...

Well, you know what I think... I find I'm not posting as much as I used to right now, but hitting my limit last week for the first time pissed me off something chronic, as at that point in the week I was well up for spending quite some time here, checking out places like the Lab and the Magick, places I don't ordinarily visit that much. My appetite for reading threads is seriously diminished when I find I can't respond.

And that was a good deal less than twenty-five posts, by the way...

Well, i was like that a few weeks ago, but I seem to be on an ascending curve on discussions and am finding that with ten posts a day I just can't contribute to them all, even if every message was a 'serious' one. Now maybe 15-20 is the right amount to have...

I no longer support this experiment.
