Saw Dangermouse again recently. Loved it as a kid, found it completely boring this time round. And the rubber toys used to split, revealing Baron Greenback's sharp metal skeleton, perfect for accidentally stabbing yourself with.
Saw Battle of the Planets again recently. Realised how much the US rejigs (the vast majority of the episodes that were shown in the UK) were sanitised to appease watchdogs/parents' groups etc, and any sense of adventure ruined along the way.
A great number of the Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck/Proky Pig cartoons contained exactly the same jokes as each other. The early Porky Pig stuff is atrocious, insipid tripe. The times when the Looney Tunes work is when there's a mile-wide streak of cruelty and madness running through them (and that's limited to a few of the early Daffy Duck shorts).
re: mickey mouse. i was thinking of the v v early stuff i.e. steamboat willy and just after. the character soon became v bland looking and acting, as if he'd been decreed some kind of ambassador for america.
You're honestly saying that Mickey Mouse wasn't bland all along?
I can't think of a single cartoon short from my youth that has stood the test of time. The only thing there is nostalgia, the images and sounds reminding you of some mythical, halcyon era in your life.
PPG is aces for all the reasons Jack gives. Pokemon and its ilk work because of their sheer absurdity.
And I think you're all being unfairly tough on CG effects in cartoons. Check out The Iron Giant to see how they can help to increase the reality in animation.
but i would argue that kids are quite happy when the older style cartoons are shown. kids like cartoons. i'm not talking about nostalgia here - i was born in the 60s, and the cartoon style then was radically different to the ones made in the 30s. i'm not sure what your point is, runs.
But you're missing the point. Kids like cartoons, full stop. It doesn't make any real difference when they were made. So, obviously, the companies involved are going to get costs down as low as they can, which may mean skimping on background art or animation. Bottom line is, the kids don't give a shit as long as the story is entertaining and the characters appeal to them. Quite often that's also a conscious styistic decision on the part of the creators; PPG is zappy, punchy, and the art is designed to reflect that. |
