A Reuters correspondant in Kabul said they heard the planes and there has been four explosives and flashes in the sky. Apparently there is a huge black ploom of smoke over the city.

Some footage from Afghan appears to show tracer fire from AA guns in the night sky.

Bush is claiming that the attacks are on terrorist bases. I think but I'm not sure he also claimed that Britain is involved in this attack. He is saying that he will drop food and medical supplies whilst attacking the Taliban. Apparently the head of the Taliban's residence.

Bush has just said that America is er... a peaceful nation. He's pretty much just said he's at war for peace. National Guard to strengthen airport security (was that already going on?).

He is also talking about this being the begining of a long and sustained conflict.

So far all this is from BBC footage.

Airbase in Kandahar said to have been taken out now. Here's to hoping this is precise as hell.

Are there any terrorist bases in Kabul? I would imagine there will be military instalations but isn't it largely a civilian city?

Apparently another city has been hit, phroneticly it sounded like Jalabad (?!). Unconfirmed reports that three bases there have been hit.

John Simpson a BBC correspondent in Afghanistan has just said that it is unlikely any of the camps would have been occupied.

That's conjecture however (though seems sensible to me).

i can't believe they bombed Kabul. when the fuck are they going to learn? you can't deliver a 'surgical strike' (if such a thing exists) in a fucking city of civilians.

i'm in the middle of putting up a peacenik resource site. i can't believe this...

Am I right in thinking this means there'll be a London demo (in Travalger Square) tomorrow (monday)?

I'm sure by now all of you are aware that it is confirmed that the US and Britain are attacking Afghanistan, and have hit several cities simultaneously.

We are also dropping in food and medical supplies for Afghan civilians.

Every major city and potential target is under the tightest possible security.

Things look pretty bad for terrorists, the Taliban, and Afghan citizens.

Ah. So presumably we now await a counterattack by the Ewoks.

I am gonna go sigilise for world sanity.

ps. UK involvement= Tomahawk cruise missiles with air support to follow, no mention of ground troops.

This from INdymedia:

quote: Anti-war protesters have taken to London's streets as US lead attack on Afghanistan

Peace protesters have taken to the streets of London on an impromtu demonstration against US-lead military strikes against Afghanistan. There are unconfirmed reports of similar protests across the rest of the UK. The lives of many innocent Afghani civilians are believed to be at risk from the air strikes.

Indymedia is also calling for people to head to trafalgar square 7pm first day of attacks- ie now.

pps Barbelith is down to a crawl, if you have yahoo instant messenger fire it up and look for benthehippy, we'll get a conference going and get some bodies together for demos.

I only caught a tiny bit of Blair's speech but he said something about 90% of the heroin on the streets of Britain comes from Afghanistan. Of course both Britain and America have been giving lots of money to the Taliban before 9/11 in an attempt to combat this. Also that figure I think will come as something of a surprise to other Heroin producers in the world.

Reported on Channel 4, Special Forces Operators have been "painting" the targets on the ground. This would mean American/British troops already on the ground. This was according to a briefing given in the White House. (Also seems to be a very good way of making life difficult for your own special force by announcing it on the international media.)

It appears another wave of bombings has begun.

Unfortunately I don't have Yahoo IM. Does anyone have AIM? I'm under the name SidneySometimes and would be curious to get some intelligent reactions to this rather than the knee-jerks from Jerry Springer fans I've been witness to.

oh Christ. I don't know what to say, and I have nothing good to add other than I feel sick. Hear there will be a peace protest in Daley Plaza at 5pm here in Chicago.

Oh and they're leaving the FUCKING FOOTBALL on in spite of this!!

Reid, you're right on.

I think it should be pointed out that the atmospheric tendancy towards peace protests is not favourable. Be safe, and don't be overly confrontational with police. They're itching for a reason right now, I'll bet.

I don't know - the peace rallies in Melbourne have been entirely well-behaved affairs (apart from a friend getting her speech cut off by the guy on the pa because she said 'fuck' 37 times). Largely because tons of church groups, etc., have been there instead of just annoying socialists.

Melbourne kids: City square (corner Swanston and Collins), 5 pm. Peace rally. See some of you there, I hope.

No one wants war. No one wants any more suffering. No one wants anymore innocent people to be killed. I wish it were a peaceful world but it's not. Anyone who believes that there is a diplomatic soloution to this problem, please click on a few of these links.

zerone:

i'm honestly too tired to get into this with you now (see 'true dove' thread for reason).

suffice to say yr argument doesn't cut it. the US and UK govts do want war. and they do want suffering. and they are evidently happy to see innocent people die because they are firing. cruise missiles. into a capital city.

maybe you believe the strongest nation on earth backed up by a coalition of almost every other nation on earth cannot muster any other response than flat-out indiscriminate violence - even when faced with the impoverished people of the world's poorest country.

i don't know what to say to you...

you're wrong. you're gonna get flamed, and you brought it on yrself. but hey - maybe it's the only language you understand.

Way to respect a dissenting opinion.

At least answer with intelligent debate. "You're gonna get flamed, and you brought it on yourself.." - That doesn't cut it. I'm not saying I disagree with you - I'm staying out of this. But, every point of view deserves intelligent response.

zerone - I'd wager that you're right about the Taliban government - they have an atrocious record of human rights abuses - but you can't tar the entire (current) six million population of Afghanistan with the same moral brush.

If these retalitory strikes are as anywhere near as inaccurate as they were during the Gulf War - there certainly will be civilian casualties - civilians that may bear the Western World less ill will than you or I do.

The population of Afghanistan is by and large desperately poor (on the brink of famine!) , poorly educated, and in possesion of a (moral) worldview that I'd wager is markedly different to a large percentage of First World's population. Things to bear in mind, when you're trying to judge.
