Has this Invisibles-related book come out yet? Anyone have the faintest idea? If not, when is it coming out?

Captain Zoom

Not out yet. I've got 'em on order to my store and I've not seen them.

Zoom.

Glad to hear it, Zoom. The copies ordered through Previews were supposed to be out today. I thought maybe my store had failed to order me a copy. I am a little disappointed, though, as I was really looking forward to reading it today. Oh, well. Have to learn the ancient art of Patience now, I guess.

And another week passes w/no notice of this book. Has anyone received a copy yet? I guess it was originally supposed to come out in April through non-Diamond routes and last week through Diamond. I'm just making sure that my shop hasn't screwed me on this.

Diamond has the books at their Memphis location. I'm surprised they're not in the shops yet. Copies ordered direct from the publisher have already shipped, so a few board members must have their copies already...

Hmmm, is Memphis the Diamond depot that people were complaining about not shipping stuff a week or two back?

I just got it in the mail. I ordered directly from the publisher.

I'm still not clear: is it out yet? Will Waterstones stock copies, or will it only be available in comic shops? Etc.

Just bought mine today - looks like a great read and it's very sharp-looking. Well done Patrick.

They didn't use my interview, which was probably for the best because it was a bit dull anyway.

Funny that the word "uncensored" is emblazoned on the cover yet they were prohibited from using any of the commissioned artwork.

Cam, you've got a free copy heading your way c/o DC. You didn't have to pay for one! You're in there somewhere, spliced up into bits.

Re: "uncensored." Pass, with a second helping of pass on the side.

If anyone here dislikes anything about the book, I can assure you my partner wrote those sections...

Doh.

There's a lot of stuff DC is meant to send me for free, which I've never received, so I won't hold my breath for this either. Nobody tells me anything.

Oh well, if I do get one in the post I'll give it to someone, or the library, or something.

Got to say, I disagree w/ a whole heap of stuff. The whole thing about Grant not explaining death, the universe and shit... Errr...read between the lines. He's got a total cosmology in there, inspite of the fact that he didn't write the "this is what happens when you die!" episode.

And the Robin being pregnant thing: who do you think's giving birth when the placenta breaks at the end? Who's the Quimper abortion's mother? Who's the Horus spirit's/Maitreya's mother? Iterations, guys, iterations....

The Natural Way

I really fancy getting into it about the Invisibles cosmology. Haven't been there in agesses. Might have to change my suit, though.

Patrick Neighly
11:32 / 30.05.02
As the opening sentence reads: Don't believe anything you read in this book. Disagreement is a good thing. You're right about the how of the universe but not the why, which I think many readers wanted to learn. I also think the Robin/Quimper thing is fairly obvious - with Robin taken outside of time she can no longer be pregnant, because things can't grow outside of time (we see this when she returns to time). The placental rupture of BARBELiTH resonates with Robin's pregnancy but isn't shown to be related to it.

I hope the introduction makes it clear that this sort of thing is just one possible view among many, and that we're not trying to law down the law. If people disagree with our viewpoints and have their own that's lovely. The book's so packed with new interviews that hopefully it's still a valuable and entertaining buy for them...

A general notice that I'm going to flee Barbelith for a while. I don't want to be the shadow over everyone's shoulder that prevents any discussion of the book that may spring up...

My big theory when we were all high on dis comic, was that the Invisibles was Robin's baby (meaning, before birth, we're all part of the supercontext, therefore we are every dam ting there is in existence and then we're born and 'reduced' to individuals, in the same way things are reduced by giving them names)

the other theory which doesnae tie in at all is about the impending armageddon being the publication of issue one - that is, the flat 2d comic book characters were becoming aware of their own supercontext, that of the 4d world in which their universe (a monthly comic) exists. The end of the world would obviously then be the end of the story in which they are characters. But they have the ability (if they're not scared like Sir Miles for instance) to transcend into our world.

So, if this is the case, does that mean King Mob became Grant Morrison?
If bloody so, where can I find Helga?

Is this available in the UK yet?

And I don't think Pat has to worry that his presence is going to stop people from discussing it...

would that GM had contacted the "one member of the message board who understood it all perfectly" and him (GM did specify their gender) and invited him write the book! (no offense to Patrick...)

The Natural Way

Patrick, I know yr reading (cheeky!): all deaths are one death...all births are one birth - Robin pregnant outside of time, the universe is being born, the screaming aborted terror of Ornothocrasi - Quimper - and Edith miscarrying in Harrods, Horus opening his eyes and blinking....resonances..iterations...fractals.

I love the look of the book. I'm disappointed with the bibliography. I'd prefer an annotated bibliography, and I think it should include work from Terence McKenna and Susan Blackmore.

I like it, but don't thiunk it goes far enough into the "mechanics" of the cosmology - how about a sequel, w/ some 'lithers contributions....

Eh?

Eh!

Good idea, eh?

Pros
Doesn't try to 'Splain It All
Thorough annotations
INTERVIEWS! INTERVIEWS! INTERVIEWS!
Looks sexy on my TPB shelf

Cons
Notes and analysis are more fun on Barbelith board
Didn't need biographies
Too long! Could have been much shorter
No art

Do the reviews match fan opinion? I couldn't believe they don't like Entropy in the UK!

Final grade
"Worth it" but could have trimmed some fat.

I have to admit, I'm a little curious about the "one member of the message board who understood it all perfectly". Just for the sake of pure speculation, who'd'ya think it might be? Did, eh, Grant happen to mention, Patrick?

Quite like the book so far, BTW. I'm just about done w/my initial plough through it. Next comes the close reading...

I went to my local branch of Waterstones, and to my local branch of Forbidden Planet, and asked if they had it. The comic store said they'd never heard of it, and Waterstones said it wasn't on their database. So, is it not actually out in the UK, or do the two stores I went to merely suck?
I just searched for it on amazon, and it turned up on amazon.com, but not on amazon.co.uk which I guess implies it's not out here yet. (When) will it be released here? Having never bought anything from amazon, is it possible to use the american systen to have books shipped here?

I'm sure you can buy it from Amazon. I live in the U.S. and I've bought books from Amazon-UK.

I doubt it. As far as I know, Patrick hadn't posted anything here before he'd finished Anarchy for the Masses.
