Or, rather: this sig makes me think this person is annoying and a bit of a tit, why should I take someone like that's comment on board? Which I've certainly felt a time or two.

Irritating indeed, but what's worse (for me) is that I actually feel very uncomfortable when folks sign off with their Real Actual Real Life Name. It's almost as though I had inadvertantly stumbled upon their private emails or some such awkwardness.

I don't want you to sneak your real names in there like some sort of subliminal message! I don't believe in any of you after all, and you can't make me, and when you try, I just have to stop reading...

*Quotes huge great wodge of text from upthread which has already been quoted by at least two other people*

*adds tiny "what he said!" inanity*

*adds little smiley face guy with cute sign showing an arrow pointing upwards and "what he said!" inanity*

*Signs off with sig consisting of a picture of self as anime character, a couple of animated dancing poodles, four lines of ASCII art flowers, and half a dozen quotes (all taken from The Matrix and Charmed*

Bumping threads - a rational irritation

Indeed. Sorry about that. Like I already said, it wasn't really warrented. I just didn't want to start a thread when I knew it was already floating around somewhere.

(Also, I feel less petty complaining about it in a thread where everybody else is doing the same...)

I think the reason why signing posts is annoying is because it implies that the poster has written a succinct letter giving their complete views, signed it, and then gone away. And is intending to take no further part in the discussion.

Whereas what this place is for is for long protracted dissection of the topic (at least some of the time).
