The Return Of Rothkoid

i agree. *i* can hardly 'shortfatdyke' in and out of a thread.

SFD, that would be the most rockin' superpower-sounding arrival noise ever. I am, on the whole, though, against sigs and such. For they are the works of the Evil One.

As for the umbrella thing: it's not the height of the holder, it's - uh - the size of the weathershield. Fuckers who walk along Oxford Street with golf umbrellas should be disembowelled. And left in the rain, afterwards.

Ive always liked the "zoom". persistent little bugger, our zoom is

I hate people who dont signal a turn or change. I hate people who have to come to a complete stop to make a turn. and I utterly despise people who cannot merge.

Doesn't anyone else around here find them a little bit fucking embarrassing?

I dont enjoy them, but I assumed I was biased because I dont drink at all. I just avoid them like I avoid the "what kind of ___ am I?" test threads.

My profound dislike of them's got nothing to do w/ my alcohol consumption, just their all round, complete and utter naffness. Basically, they're a bit like Queen. I always imagine the people who're into them being the kind of dicks who say things like "I'm craaaazy, I am!" or "I'm just maaad!" Y'know, really boring people w/ no sense of humour, but a desperate, pathetic desire to be wacky and individual.

So it kind of depresses me when bar threads turn up on barbelith. Because I want to like everyone here and not HATE THEM, KICK THEM, AND FEED THEM ON CHUM, LIKE THE DOGS THEY ARE! God, if I see another "TOTAL NOB orders a few pints of stella for his chums and then....whoops! sorry barman! You know hat I'm like....(etc., general arsetalk)" I'll spill everyone's pints. permanently.

Still. Marry me, Mordant.

Purge over.

It was a cheekywinking one.

At least yr last bar thread was kinda funny, but, I'm sorry to say, it was the catalyst for my little rant.

Colour me irrational.

No, you're quite right.

And I'm for zero tolerance on sigs. Zoom's 'Zoom's just make me picture him with a blanket tied round his neck to serve as a cape, and a colander on his head as a 'helmet', like little Tommy Tomorrow.

sfd - Rothkoid said exactly what I was thinking. I'd *love* to see you "shortfatdyke" in and out of threads... very cool.

Signature files *are* evil. But signing off doesn't really bother me. Unless it's done with kisses (on message boards). Sorry, anyone...

of course, Ive been known to zoom around in this manner, complete with purple animal-head-hooded towels

My thread bally well was not a bar thread. It was a gentleman's club thread, a let's-all-talk-like-Bertie-Wooster-and-shoot-peasants thread. Any drink references were purely incidental to the main action.

You try to raise the tone of the place and look what happens.

Tom, does your loathing come more from the fact that it breaks up the flow when you’re reading, or that it’s taking up space on the board ? If the latter, then ahhhh (nods)…

Yeah - personally I think that when you're reading a thread - particularly one of the more densely argued ones, you lose the flow of the discussion. It just seems really odd to me. Like if you were down the pub with someone, or having a heated debate with them, and they just kept repeating their name at the end of everything they said. You'd be like, 'YOU'RE NUTS'.

I suppose it's a question of how people are relating to the board in terms of space. When I think of this place I think of a conversation or discussion forum - I don't think of it in terms of sending in a message I think of it in terms of talking. Which is clearly untrue as it's a bit of both and bit of something else as well... But you see what I mean. It drives me mad - even when Zoom and Arthur do it. (but I forgive them because they often write classy stuff) But the point being, I suppose, that it's not really UP to me how people do it or if people do it. As long as it doesn't screw up all the debate it's none of my business...

you know, i'm really coming around to fascism. tom, your whole "i don't like it but it's not up to me" is sweet and noble, and insofar as it results in your lessening of personal headaches i'm all for it... but if you ever decide to be a complete warren ellisesque nazi and rule with an iron fist, i'll be the first in line to clack my heels together and hand you a bundle of sticks. i'm totally over the endless irrelevant discussions of "free speech and revolution" on the board; the more laws you give us, the less superficial crap there is to discuss and the more time we have to talk about... uh... what kind of smurf i am.

On the bright side, if a thread is being densely argued, you can pretty much discard as unprofitable anything contributed by somebody who signs their posts...

[Yes, I'm replying to a three-year-old post.]

Tom: I suppose it's a question of how people are relating to the board in terms of space. When I think of this place I think of a conversation or discussion forum - I don't think of it in terms of sending in a message I think of it in terms of talking. Which is clearly untrue as it's a bit of both and bit of something else as well... But you see what I mean.

I do see what [Tom] means, but I find that my perception of "space" can vary from thread to thread. Many threads (like this one) do feel conversationy, and clearly (as noted many times above) it is not at all necessary to sign posts. A thread like the annual "Black & Orange" threads in the Temple, though, feels much more like a "leave a message for the others" kind of thread, and I tended to sign those off with a full sig' and usually a quote or lyrics relevant to the day's working. It was just that kind of thread (and I hope nobody tore their hair out over it).

Yeah, this thread is a little outdated. I've seen a more recent one, and I mistook this for it. My mistake.

Please excuse bith that and my original irritation. I can deal with it.

So, question - does the presence or absence of a sig make one question the value of a comment? Theoretically, since it occurs at the end of a comment, it shouldn't, but I find it does through recurrence in the same page - the "endlessly repeating own name in conversation" effect.
