Any one else notice that they way to tell charles from jean in this issue was to look at the eyebrows?

Now I'm wondering if it was Jean or Xavier who told Cyclops he was their favorite superhero...

ah, lada, no, it was actually charles's body, cassandra's was dead by that time.

jithink grants got xavier out the wheelchair in case the 'writing as magic' meme ended up putting him in one?

wolverine also had the "charles eyebrow" characteristic. I wonder if that is the result of jean partioning of bits of Xavier's mind into every mutant on earth.
What did Jean mean when she asks Scott..." what are we going to do?" Is that a question about Scott's possible infidelity?

Yeah, I think Jean's question was in relation to Scott's possible infidelity.

And back to the birth subtext, I thought it was great how Emma was cradling Stuff/Cassandra. Both Cassandra AND Charles were born (or reborn) into flesh, Cassie with less mobility and Charles with more.

And it was SO appropriate that Scott was with Jean for the birth of Charles. But Scott buckles under, saying "I'm going to ruin everything" (which can be taken many ways, one of which is infidelity).

On a totally different note, anyone notice Cassie's glowing yellow eyes
as she's entering Stuff and then Henry's glowing yellow eyes on the second-to-last page? Connection? (hope not, that would be silly)

As well, I liked how only the figures, apples, papers, and chalk were outlined in black in the classroom sequence.

was anyone else extemely reminded of the end of Vol3iss2 of the Invisibles with that class room scene? Or even Vol1 iss ! of Invisibles!!!

The Apple theme again!!!

"A is for Atom B is for Bomb" and Jean writes an X on the chalk board!!!

Now Cassi will never be alone... She'll hava Jean & Charles in her head all the time!!! Now was that actually them or part of the program the Stepford Cookoos Created for Cassi?

Can a shapeshifter have an opposite?

Mr Tricks
17:55 / 17.05.02
actually.... wouldn't the "mumudra" of a shapeshifer be a static unchanging form?

What a perfect container for it...

Why are the mummudrai and Cassandra two beings in the classroom? And why is the mummudrai the only one to get pens and paper? Lots of them to boot...

I like how it drops and crumbles the papers in the "A is for Atom" panel. It obviously has no idea what to do with them.

And -- thank God -- I don't think we have to worry about Beast's eyes in the next to last page. They look the same way in five pages earlier. I think the glow is supposed to be shiny cat's eyes.

OT: What was that horrible, terrible stuff at the end of the magazine? The "Jay Leno & Spiderman"-thing... Is it an advert? What is it for?

I don't know why, but just reading it made me feel dirty...

Mr Tricks
22:25 / 17.05.02
yeah... Marvel's been droping some back-up stories into some of it's titles.. that Horrid Horrid spiderman crap... And the Super Firemen story.... The Call.

My guess on the Classroom scene is that The Cassandra consciousness was mostly reabsorbed into Professor X...

The Mummudri jumped into the empty stuff body with a few tattered remains of the cassandra consciousness it retained. That whole fleshy black hole scene was (to me) the last sliver's of cassandra being lost in the mass of stuff's consciousness... or lack there of.

So in the classroom of "stuff's" mind there is the Mumudri but as it must have something to be opposite to... there is a baby Cassi/charles as well.

"Now Cassi will never be alone... She'll hava Jean & Charles in her head all the time!!! Now was that actually them or part of the program the Stepford Cookoos Created for Cassi?"

No they're part of the program. Look at Jean's boots. They look like the boots Emma wears and would design.

I think people are overcomplicating things a bit: Beast's eyes? just registering alarm - nothing to do w/ Cassy. The Classroom? Just a split psychic projection: Cassy's the Mummundrai's mouth - its body. Why shouldn't she be there?

I thought the birth theme was nice, but also dug the cooperation/friendship theme: teamwork - from the battlefield to Jean's head. How do you "beat" those stunted aspects of the psyche paralysed by alienation and fear of death? You educate them. Make the baby consciousness grow up. If you can. It was all very nurturing and loving and cuddly.

Oh, and wolvy's eyebrows had sod all to do w/ that split consciousness business. Frank just draws them all arched.

Now that really is overcomplicating things.....

I think you're right about Wolverine, Runce, but Quitely doesn't draw all eyebrows arched; in this issue, he uses 'em to suggest Xavier looking out from Jean's eyes. In the 'Jean-and-Xavier-cohabiting' panels, her face is also more sharply angled, her limbs and general posture more masculine.

I particularly liked the way Scott's depicted this issue, especially the bit just after the "Emma's still on the loose" line where he's actually smiling. He's really quite endearing when he remembers not to pout.

And Wolvie's leather dungarees. Mmmm...

The "all" thing was just a turn of phrase; as in: "he looks all woobly". I'd already noticed the "eyebrows as identifiers" thing, so that doesn't need any clearing up.

Got it yesterday. Brilliant stuff. Just seems to be some voodoo going on that the quality of Grant's script is in direct proportion to the work done by the artist. Korday- Shit art, Morrison- scripts involving the Shi'ar guard who he doesn't seem to have a clear handle on portraying except as supersteller creatures with lots of his fun dialogue. As Quitley gets back Morrison finishes off with them and it's fun time.

Hey, not only in NXM bi-weekly in June, it's bi-weekly in August too. Nice! 5 issues in three months. If people still complain about NXM's 'chronic lateness', they're out of their minds. The book has come out once a month since September 2001.

Anyway, here is a sneak peak at the covers. Ethan Van Sciver does 130, and John Paul Leon does 131. Please note that Igor Kordey was originally slated to draw 130, but now Ethan has the issue instead. Igor is gone!

Matthew Fluxington
18:38 / 21.05.02
Um, actually, I'm wrong. Igor still draws 130... but after that, he's gone!

For those keeping track:

127 - John Paul Leon
128 - Igor Kordey
129 - Igor Kordey
130 - Igor Kordey
131 - John Paul Leon
132 - Phil Jiminez
133 - Ethan Van Sciver
134 - Ethan Van Sciver
135 - Frank Quitely
136 - Frank Quitely
137 - Frank Quitely
138 - Frank Quitely

Think he has. Grant's caning his way through the scripts, allegedly.

Yes, from what I've read, Grant has written all the way up through 135, Frank's first issue back...

Sorry to bring up something continuity based, but does anyone know when Wolverine was meant to have remembered his past as shown in Origin? Or was cassandra the first person to extract these memories?

it would make sence that she would uncover these memories NOw... in time for the mini-series...

What was Xorn trying to do healing Cassandra/Xavier's body?? This effort was obviously coordinated with Beast's syringes. I don't get it!!

xorn's naive and nice

The Natural Way
13:30 / 31.05.02
Oh, they were just double-teaming her using their various, respective means....the weapons one might associate w/ them - Beast, being a doctor/scientist type, breaks out the syringes filled w/ gloop and Xorn does his healing bit.... Don't read too much into it. The kids won't.

I presume as Cassie was actually that big multihanded creature controlling Charles body that Xorn was disrupting it's control long enough for Beast to inject it with the nano's to totally fuck it up so it lost Charles' telepathic powers.

I think.

Having a quick re-read of these issues, I notice that, in this one, Emma's suddenly lost the plaster over her (broken?) nose that appeared with equal suddenness in #123. I know it's being picky, but I'm surprised that Quitely managed to overlook that detail (twice).

Also - and I know this probably isn't the right thread for the observation - we see Grant, yet again, reworking an idea that he's used before; the Mummudra is remarkably similar to Reed Richard's imaginary Tulpa from FF 1234.

The Natural Way
07:55 / 11.07.02
Or any of the Groffian ideas he pinched for the end of the Invisibles. S'not much of a revelation really.

But one in the eye for peeps who're finding it difficult to accept Beast's newfound gayness:

Charles: "I see you've changed again....."

He's not talking about the physical mutation (he's already familiar w/ Henry's new look), he's talking about an internal shift - an evolving sexuality.

The Falcon
21:58 / 18.02.03
Or is he? (Nevermind, Runcey - I was into the idea of gay Beast for a while too)

That apple... Cassandra as birth trauma... a big red splodge, like a certain placenta?

I'm just saying, is all.
