discarding the "New Topics" forum, and posting a whole bunch of threads

Eh? Do you mean the "New Forums" topic?

The only thing clear to me here is that the majority of voices against gaming have no bloddy idea what it is all about, what its like, or where its gone in the past 20 years. If you aren't into it, then leave it be. You don't know what you are talking about so kindly keep your stereotypes to yourself. Perhaps you might try reading the current threads now that some discussion has started about it and learn a thing or two before you generate an opinion. You might find that it contains valid elements of all the boards these topics were posted on, and yet is none of these things. This if nothing else should demonstrate the difficulty in finding a home for it.

I still think it's a lot more reasonable for the small number of people posting here who would like to talk about gaming in-depth to start up a small off-shoot community, like a small message board or email list.

And while we're at it should we all go back to where we came from, cut our hair, stop listening to the bloody awful racket and straighten-up.

See, this is that "taking what appear to be reasonable ideas and suggestions as personal attacks " thing I'm talking about.

Sleaze has a very good point: How many people will actually USE the RPG forum? Is it worth putting in a new forum just because 12 people are potentially interested in it?

Haus has a good point as well: if we add a new forum to cater to a very narrow interest group, why not add just any other forum? And I think that's very worth considering. Where do we want to go in terms of content of this site? I want to say that my opinion on this has nothing to do with whether or not I personally am interested in RPG: I rarely spend any time in Magick or Comics, but those forums simply have a broader appeal to Lithers than RPG would. Sorry but that does appear to be true. Which is not to say that some pro RPG forum folks haven't put together some persuasive arguments, but really let's look at how much use the forum will get, and what the content will be.

And my man ERDP can add +2 to his intelligience score for the best point: the last thing we need right now is another spectacle style forum. I'd be more down with a more intellectually bent forum but I'm not sure what exactly that would be.

As has been pointed out, the proposed forum would probably include all forms of "game", be it RPG, video or sport, or some amalgam (Advanced Dungeons & Rugby?). I wish to withdraw my support for an RPG forum and move it over to support for a Recreation forum. I realize this unbalances things, but just because we want one Spectacle forum added doesn't mean a Revolution one won't be. I assume. I really have no idea about the technical aspects of adding fora. I'd like to apologize if anything I said inadvertantly turned this into a crusade, which I assure you I had no intention of doing. RPGs have recently become a larger focus in my life and I want to talk about them. With you lot, because you're funny and smart and not bogged down in rules and restrictions. The fictional reality aspect of RPGs really screams Barbelith to me.

And I apologize for the Switchboard thing too. At the time it seemed amusing, but perhaps was ill-conceived in the current clime.

Hee hee, forum rot.

Zoom.

I'd like to clarify that my call has been for a gaming forum and one that would be broad.

Please not that there is a difference between gaming and RPGing and the two should not be readily confused. Just because myself and Zoom put up topics about RPGs, doesn't mean that they're the only part. Gaming is much broader.

Didn't want this to necessarily come off as more out-of-the-floorboards gamer support, but there are a great deal of games and gaming theories that have prevalent meanings that I think those unfamiliar with them would be interested in. Most of my fascination with them has a great deal to do with concept and implementing it in new and creative ways. This thread has a glimpse of a bit of it. I would have about 3 - 5 topics to add in this flavor right away if there were a more insulated place to discuss it.

RPG's work from a fairly similar structure but have a great deal of paths to take from it. But honestly, they have nothing on some vid game concepts that have shown up over the twenty or so years. Not all of them have entertainment as a core value either. I just think games often times provide good social commentary and have had a very heavy hand in how everyone here interfaces with electronics to be able to visualize and use the board. The guys who built the first PC also made Breakout you know. Video games moreso than any other source have driven electronic media and entertainment.

Now..aside from that rant, the whole generation of this discussion and where it originally diverged from dealt with new forum(s)...what does everyone think about the balancing act brought up before? What can be added to the Revolution that would be interesting?

My suggestion, for what its worth would be thus: Make Art and design into a 'Art, Design, Games, Sport and other Miscelleny' forum. This would also give a location for discussions which belong in the spectacle but not in any particular forum- I'm thinking of Flux's prolific thread for example, and any discussion about genres regardless of the medium they're implemented in. This would prevent any future discussions of this nature, would maintain the balance between the rev and the spectacle, and would ensure all the spectacle forums got a slightly more even distribution of postings.
2c. Make of it what you will. Or don't.

I too think thatt Art and Design might need to be extended if it's ever going to make a mark on the board as a whole, but I'm not sure that gaming is the way forward for it. Among the temptations I've got is to stick Theatre in with Art and Design and Gaming in with TV. Which is a weird shift based mostly about two overlapping demographics rather than by a decent typography of media.

Probably not somewhere I'd personally hang out in a lot, but the strength of feeling does seem to indicate that there would be a fair bit of interest. However, as Tom says with the votes thing, it's kind of hard to tell without actual numbers. Though Zoom's "Recreation" idea sounds like quite a nice compromise- it could have a fairly wide brief, and cover such additional things as urban exploration, etc.

Tom:

Will you all bloody shut up and stop complaining? We'll have a vote and leave it at that. If everyone would just sit down and start thinking about the various options to choose between..

Fair enough, but my question would be when and how will the voting be decided?

Following your questions:

Not having a gaming forum:

I vote for a gaming forum. I think there's at least enough interest in gaming as there is in say, the Art and Design forum.

RPG and Computer Games forum in The Spectacle

Seems like a logical place for it.

or something in the participation

Off topic unless the subject is actually creating games, computer, RPG or otherwise.

or make em use the Conversation

The Conversation is a general gabfest/chat board. If game stuff is posted there I'll never see it since I ignore the Conversation anyway.

or extend a current forum to apply to them as well...

It might as someone said, be rolled into the Comics forum, but I'd expect that this would cause lots of pissiness and resentment among certain people.

I vote for a seperate gaming section in the Spectacle. Logically, that's where it belongs.

What about instead of a 'Gamming forum' how about a Games and Hobbies..that way they it wouldn't be confined to RPG's but could encompase anything from D&D to collecting Transformers or whathaveyous.

Just a small point because I missed this first time round, there are quite a few places to talk about RPG's and the like on t'internet but well gosh darn it people here are cooler than elsewhere :-).
The well-written RPG's thread in books plus others actually have a bunch of intelligent, creative people talking about the games as opposed to being fanboys and flame-merchants. That's kind of rare.
As to having a special forum? Well it kind of fits in creation and books really, well at least in my head.

I'm all for a Games thread,
I want to talk about Chess, Cards and Go.
Magic: the Gathering, Vampire and tic tac toe.
Let's not forget PacMan, Final Fantasy and Mario.

New Zealand Story was great though...

Y'know, it's REALLY SCARY how you took those thoughts right out of my head...

It's been close to two weeks since your last post on this.

What say you?
