So I was poking around the wonderful treasure trove that is alt.magick, and came upon a thread discussing a group of people getting together and working through Kraig's Modern Magick. It wasn't actually a full year, I believe it was only 98 days.

Would there be any interest in doing something like that here? I mean I've seen some threads, like "Magick fucks all" in the conversation, where people have expressed some interest in magick, but either don't know where to start or have some other reason for not getting more involved.

This would give the people who don't know where to start a starting place and might drum up more interest in the magick forum. Think of it as the magical equivalent of the book club.

Its just a thought.

we should go through liber KKK. Step by step. I keep trying to start but I'm lazy.

The Thread on Ulysses got me to read it, mabye a group doing kkk would get me to do it.

Deadline? Did someone impose a deadline when I wasn't looking? Damn dictators! I really didn't think there'd be much if any interest in doing something like this. I just thought it'd be something interesting to do to help the beginners who've expressed an interest in getting start a place to start and maybe get more people involved in the forum so people will stop saying, "The magick is the ghetto forum."

So where are we starting? Is there a start point in mind? Can I get some more info on this once you've got it? Am I asking too many questions? Is this incessant querying beginning to get on your nerves?

Sorry. Got carried away there.

Oh hell, have I been elected the head of this little project or something?

What do you mean by starting point? What other information do you need?

The danger of starting a thread... ;D

As for needed information: What exactly is Kraig's Modern Magick, and how difficult might it be to find a copy? That will probably dictate when we should start.

Modern Magick could basically be called "ceremonial magick for dummies". Kraig covers the basics of ceremonial magick, the kabbalah, and other nifty stuff. He's got a few silly ideas about white, black, and grey magick, but nothing too majorly wrong with the work.

Finding a copy should not be hard at all. Its put out by Llewellyn and the second edition, which I have, was put out last year. I'd be surprised if you can't find a copy.

Two of the first three rituals deal with the tarot. I don't know how many people have a deck that would be acceptable to Kraig. My deck isn't. Supposedly, the Thoth deck is too "complex in symbolism".So I figure we could just skip those two rituals.

I don't know about a starting date yet, I want to give everybody a chance to get the book, so if anybody has any suggestions, speak up.

The summer solstice is June 21, if we want to allow two months for mail ordered books. (Hey, can you still order Amazon books through Barbelith?)

June 21 sounds good.

Is there still any interest in doing this or should we just toss this in the pile of ideas that never got off the ground due to lack of interest?

i'm still in, if only because i need to push myself out of the nest like a wittle baby eagle. hopefully i won't die upon impact with the ground. is this a good starting point for a magick beginner? i learn quick and can always backtrack if i'm not feelin it... june 21 it is.

utopia = dumbass (sorry flux). yeah, that's the point, isn't it? should of re-read the thread...i actually forgot about this whole thing until i saw it in the "active" links under magick...

I've only read through lesson three so far, but it seems perfect for the beginner.

You start out with the basic relaxation ritual, there's a few tarot things, you move up to the LBRP, the middle pillar ritual and so on.

The "What Barbelith?" thread has been kind of inspiring.

I really want this to succeed even if only three people work through it.

well i ws intending to do something like this even before you concieved this glorious plan. had a bit of failure with meditation last summer, wanted to try again (and really try this time). all these beginner magick threads have just been tempting me to try other things as well...

Trijhaos

The way I figure it, if a beginner is working with a group, they'll push themselves to try harder than if they were working by themselves.

Other groups have done this. I remember reading a thread about this in the old fido groups back before the internet was all the rage.

I may be interested in this, however I would like to cover Condensed
Chaos. Will only one "beginners" book be covered then move onto something else or could it develop into a perpetual thing operating on many levels?

Trijhaos
21:25 / 04.05.02
I'd like it to move on several different levels. You know, have a group working on a beginner's level with Modern Magick or whatever. Have another group working on something more advanced like Liber KKK. It'd be nice to have a core group, one that would, while working on the advanced stuff, be willing to work on the easier stuff with the beginner's.

Assuming I can get a copy of modern magick (which I probably can), I'm in. Maybe a topic about this in "conversation" might be a good idea if you want to expand participation in the magick forum?

Trijhaos
22:07 / 04.05.02
Yeah, that'd probably be a good idea. I think it'd probably be better to do it Monday, when it'll get more views.

I probably should have actually planned all this out before mentioning something, but I wasn't expecting any real interest.

Trijhaos, do you have a link to the alt.magick address you found the original thread? Coincidently, I don't know to what extent, this relates to this topic, but I have been reading a chapter in Starhawks: Dreaming the dark, about groups. I was going to raise some of the ideas of this chapter in the policy, and I thought it could be useful in this area. I will post some of the intereting parts when I have more time, unless someone else can find a good link to the text or knows it enough to comment.

I'm not sure if the link woud work correctly. The last time I tried to post a link from the google groups, it wouldn't hyperlink correctly.

This page has a summary of what one of the groups did. If you're really interested in the alt.magick post, when you hit the google groups type in "A year of DMK" or anything involving the words 'year' and 'modern magick'.

Just wanted to say that I'm in. I've ordered the book and I am fully expecting to develop magickal powers that will allow me to take over the world and become irresistable to the opposite sex as well as find all the socks I lose. If that doesn't happen, I'll be blaming you, Trijhaos.

grrr.

Trijhaos
00:11 / 13.05.02
I wouldn't have it any other way.

While I can't vouch for magick making you irresistable to the opposite sex, I can honestly say I haven't lost a single sock in quite a while.

If you really want to be irresistable, I heard that the best pick-up line is "I'd like to dip my athame into your chalice"

I'm .. cautiously interested in taking part in this here thingy.

I should hopefully have some time over the summer to get started, but I dunno if I really want to get into a program of work that deals with hardcore Golden Dawn / Kabbala(?) kind of stuff. I'm far more receptive toward the chaos side of things..

I understand. After this little bit starts gaining some momentum, I'd like to get some people together who are interested in working through something like 'Condensed Chaos', 'Oven-ready Chaos', or Liber MMM. As I've said before think of this as the magick forum's equivalent of the Book Personals/Club deal.

Anyway, I was thinking of kind of working through modified lessons. Take for instance, the tarot contemplation ritual. I don't think an understanding of the tarot is necessary to work magick, and I don't want people to run out and buy a deck just because they feel they need to have a deck to properly work through this book. If they want to purchase a deck, and work through the tarot contemplation ritual and the other rituals dealing with the tarot, and want to post their results, more power to them.

So is this book any good then?
What's it's pitch in relation to all the other magical manuals out there?

Let me see if I can give this a try.

Intent: To give those who want to start practicing magick a focus and a place to start. It can also be used for those more experienced to brush up on skills they may have let atrophy.

Source/book: Modern Magick: Eleven Lessons in the High Magical Arts by Donald Michael Kraig.

Schedule: Start date seems to be June 21. End date: don't know, have to see how it goes.

Approach: Not sure what you mean here.
