Hey, look who's on the cover of New X-Men #125. Perhaps Grant really is on the same wavelength as Runce...

Anyway, here's an article from X-Fan that clears up a lot of things, and gives us a peak into the future of New X-Men. Note: I had no idea that Grant was planning on sticking with New X-Men for so long. This is just the beginning...he's staying on til at least #150...

MORRISON TALKS NEW X-MEN #125 MILESTONE
Today
X-Fan recently caught up with New X-Men writer Grant Morrison to find out what he has planned for the upcoming milestone issue #125 of the title.

"I'm afraid there's actually nothing particularly special in #125," Morrison told X-Fan. "The big milestone conclusion of the Cassandra Nova storyline is actually in #126 because I needed to use an extra issue to fit everything in."

"I'm gearing up for a very big storyline in #140 and have something coming up for #150 that's so shocking you'd die instantly if I told you. But as I say, #125 is interesting mainly for the 'death' of Charles Xavier, the collapse of the Shi'ar Empire, and a very startling announcement from Beast."

Nothing particularly special indeed! And if you're wondering about the above image, yes, that is a preview of the cover to #125 and no, it's not by Joe Quesada who was originally solicited as the cover artist. It is, as the signature suggests, by former New X-Men regular fill-in and upcoming Phoenix mini-series artist Ethan Van Sciver.

New X-Men editor Mark Powers clarified the situation for X-Fan, saying, "Joe was overwhelmed with EiC stuff and had to beg off. Ethan stepped in and provided a beautiful cover."

Powers also updated X-Fan as to the rotation schedule for the series' two regular artists, Frank Quitely and Igor Kordey, in the coming months.

"Actually, it's made more clear in #125's letters page," said Powers. "Figuring out this schedule - which includes June's 13th issue - has been an evolving process. To give Igor some breathing room, and to allow him the chance to start clean on his own arc, Grant decided to write a single-issue story for #127 that focuses on Xorn. That issue will be illustrated by John Paul Leon. Meanwhile, Igor's starting #128-130; Frank will starting on the last five issues of the year within the next two weeks or so."

"Grant's been superhuman about all this - he's turned in multiple scripts this month to get everyone going. And trust me when I say, 'this is where the fun REALLY begins'."

Last but not least, Powers provided X-Fan with a selection of preview pages from the issue by Kordey. Click a thumbnail below to view the full-sized image in a new browser window.

Looks like she's taken over Jeans mind.

Does anyone else think that Kordey has rushed this months and last months art? The last iss was a real let-down for me.

Well, I think the 124 and 125, as well as the previous two Igor Kordey issues were rushed, because, well, he was under a strict deadline and was called in for the project because is incredibly fast. I think his art is suffering horribly in his NXM issues, so I'm glad that he's being given a breather before he draws the next storyline. Still, the guy is drawing another monthly comic (Cable), and he is being pressed for time - given the artwork I've seen in his recent Cable issues, the guy isn't a bad artist. He's just zooming through these issues at a pace which does not allow him to pay too much attention to detail or fix up errors... it's unfortunate. It's the trade-off we all have to deal with for having the comic come out more frequently...

Hopefully, Igor's art in the next storyline won't be as sloppy and difficult as his Imperial work...

And yeah, it does look like Jean is the next host for Cassandra...

Looks more to me like she's crying over the death of Charles. Her eyes have glowed when she's used her powers in previous issues.

Those preview images look much better than last issue. I can actually tell what's going on in them, and they seem to be coloured well.

Probably a week from this Wednesday. Something like that.

By the way, comics come out on Thursday this week.

Agreed. I really do wish you could get a fill-in job. Out of curiosity, how fast are you Cameron? Could you pull off a full-time gig on Catwoman along with fill-in NXM issues?

I'm particularly fond of the Xavier image. The only one that doesn't quite gel is the Emma drawing, something doesn't seem right about it, to me. She doesn't seem "Emma" to me there...

CameronStewart
22:15 / 02.04.02
Yeah, Emma is my least favourite. I couldn't think of a decent pose for her and it's hard to spot blacks on an all-white outfit.

These particular drawings were done very quickly - around 10-15 minutes each (though they're much smaller in my sketchbook than they appear onscreen). I'm not sure I could handle BOTH pencilling and inking Catwoman AND doing another book at the moment. But we're way ahead on Catwoman (I'm finishing up issue 11 now, as #5 just hit the shelves), so I may be able to drop behind a month (which is still ahead by five) while I do something else...

I've sent these to Grant, and expressed my interest in drawing at least ONE issue. This summer in San Diego I shall be selling myself hard to the relevant editors.

Fingers crossed...

Thanks to Flyboy for fixing the images.

I reckon that'd complement the book perfectly. Just the right mix of classic influences and modern appeal. Damn fine work.

Going a little off topic here, but I was just curious when I saw the pencilling and inking comment by Cameron, I was just wondering how many people usually work on a comic book, I mean each issue?

CameronStewart
13:55 / 03.04.02
>>>How many people work on each issue?<<<

The core players are the writer, penciller, inker (sometimes one artist for both, but rare), letterer, and colourist. Then you have the colour separators, the editor, the editor's assistant, the editor in chief...it's a lot of people.

*coughcoughtoomanycookscoughcough* :-D

Hmm..I appreciate the shrinking of the images, but they look all ugly and pixelly now. Boo.

I noticed that as well. Why does that happen when you view images at a certain size?

But anyway, really like the art. Bug Grant dammit! Do not let the man sleep!

Although, does he actually get much of a say in these things?

The first thing that struck me was that I liked the stitches on Frost's vinyl. Her face looks less Scandinavian than I'm used to, though.

So she's kinda cool.

That art looks great. Missing the distinctive Quitely camel toe on Emma, though. And Cameron, can you draw a gnostic demiurge? Cause that's what's really important

You know, you here a new phrase you've never heard before and then all of a sudden it pops up everywhere, camel toe indeed.....

Xavier is shit hot by the way, you want to draw me a bear paw with an eye in the middle tattoo Cameron?

I'm so very scared.

I believe it's pronounced 'eye-gore'. Art looks slightly better, I guess. Still can't tell what's going on, though. But then you get lines like: 'the star-mind-man induced in my plasma core a reactor failure', which is something I'm sure we can all relate to.

Has there been any word on when the next trade paperback will be published?

The next trade paperback, collecting 118-126 (but not the annual, which I think will make some things very confusing) will be out in June, just after 126 is released.

thanks, flux. had wondered about that annual, whether or not it would be collected anywhere. the 'wide-screen' format of it would have messed things up anyways.

Has anyone picked it up yet? It's out today.

Just read through it. Lots going on this issue. The 'junior x-men' stuff is good, and Xorn is starting to take some shape. The Beak is back, but you could probably tell that from the cover. Kordey's artwork is what it is, I'm tired of slagging off on it.

1. why did they split up the double page title spread?

2. I am quite certain that Cassandra was bluffing when she confronted Scott. I think that she is scared of him, and knew that she could not engage him, so instead played the "Charles" card, and walked off. Note that Scott was not at all intimidated by her insults... (or maybe Igor just didn't get it right...I wonder a lot about this issue and the last, I feel like Igor's sloppy pencils are maybe cutting out a lot of the visual information that Grant intends)

3. What are the Cuckoos planning? What could they do with the Cassandra DNA? I'm not sure - are they planning on finding a way to exploit her apparent healing gifts? Any ideas?

4. So Henry thinks he may be gay. Nice move. Henry's the ultimate "bear", isn't he?

5. So Jean and Charles are in the same body now - albeit a sick body. I'm interested to see how they end up beating Cassandra with "cooperation", as Jean suggested a few issues back.

I'm pretty excited to see how this works out, I'm trying to figure out how all the pieces are going to ultimately fit together. I was thinking Xorn was going to be the one to stop the nano-sentinels, but now, mmm, maybe it's the kids... I guess the Cassandra bit will just be a matter of evicting her from Charles' skull. I'm wondering how Scott fits into this. I'm quite certain he's going to be the key...

Regarding Beast's 'gay' line...I couldn't tell if he was serious or if this was his clever way of showing the re-interested dumper that he was through w/her.

I haven't read this ish, but the Beast as gay? As cool as I think that is it is coming out of nowhere. Oh well, I always thought him and Iceman made a cute couple.
