I'd be happy to help out ye olde Rothkoid in Art and Design, if I'm not too late. If you don't need me I can at least promise to troll a lot and keep it interesting. Shake up those decadent wankers!

I'll take a stab at the Magick if you need more hands on it. I'm there every work-day anyway, I might as well grab a broom, eh?

I'd do creation or comics, or anything else really. But what's all involved in being a moderator? Perhaps a little info here would help some people make up their minds.

I'd like a chance to moderate The Policy forum - Maybe after I post my 'report' on what everyone's been saying you can check it out?

in the nomination stakes i'd like to see crunchy, rosa, deva and haus as moderators of the headshop along with nick. We kind of need another moderator there at least quite urgently...

Still up for being a Laboratory moderator. (Okay if I have it re-tiled in pink, tho'?)

I'd actually be down with helping out but methinks I'm more of a headshop girl than a switchboard one. Also as I'm not sure how much internet access I'll have in the next two months (though, bear in mind I am an addict) I'm not sure how good a job I can do moderating. Still, I'm here if you need me, kids.

Hey guys - bear with me if this takes a little longer than I initially thought. I'm in Norfolk with my family for the Easter weekend and haven't really got time to get a real sense of some of the posters I'm less familiar with.

This won't be an issue in the long-term (I hope), because hopefully then we'll have instituted the new process for keeping moderators...

Zoom - I don't want to go into too much detail (just because I seem to be explaining it a lot at the moment), but basically the FUNCTION of the barbelith moderator is to facilitate conversation, sort out bugs, alert people to really bad behaviour and generally make their forum a nicer place to hang around in.

Quite a lot of this is just about taking a special interest in your forum and trying to make it an interesting and on-topic place to hang out. If conversation dries up it's up to you to find something WORTH talking about - if a thread looks like it's running out of steam without having really gotten to grips with its issue, you should be looking to how you can get it back on track.

Moderators do not point fingers publically in the forum that they're in charge of unless they HAVE to. Speak to people through private messaging if there's a problem and talk to other moderators and me via PM as well if you want some advice.

THE ACTUAL PROCESS OF MODERATION is a rather different beast. Basically, everyone has by their name 'moderate post' and 'moderate user' when they're logged in. Moderators see that by EVERYONE'S name in their forum. So they can go in and suggest an edit to the post, a deletion of the post, a moving of the topic, a deleting of the topic and some (as yet undefined) actions regarding people. Each one of these actions requires a certain amount of positive votes to be completed and only ONE negative vote to not happen. Moderators in a forum where a change has been suggested get asked for their vote - and when enough have voted on a change then it's either carried out or NOT carried out - depending on the circumstances.

There are two particularly neat things about this system. The first is that we can weight different actions according to their consequences. It takes THREE VOTES from people (as well as the initial suggester) for a thread to be deleted. And it only takes one vote for most of the lesser actions.

The second thing about it is that since it requires less votes than each forum should have moderators - moderations can be acted on quickly - and if you come to the site after amoderation has been completed then you won't be informed about it. You only see the things that people want to do there and then... So even if you only log onto the site once a month for a couple of hours and only vote on two or three moderation actions then you're still HELPING, even if we'd rather you did it more than that...

Would I have to take a piss test? How much does it pay?

I think Id like to smite people, do you have any positions that involve swords?

So how do we know if someone wants a post moderated? Does it show up in the post, or do we get a message or what?

Trijhaos
11:11 / 30.03.02
If someone wants a post moderated you'll get a message in the private message box at the top of the page that says something along the lines of "You have x moderator duties waiting" where x is the number of messages that need to be edited/deleted/moved.

Like I was saying, Tom, I want to be a moderator in every forum. I have the time.

Tom Coates
06:51 / 31.03.02
I'm not keen to have people moderate over every forum... I know it spreads the workload a bit, but it's not only a job about clicking on the links and making the decision - it's also about inspiring conversation and debate.

Plus... Don't think that the moderator's job is completely finished yet... Particularly for those of you in the Spectacle, something big this way may be coming (but don't hold your breath)...

Haus about we all give each other a big lovely huggle?
23:41 / 31.03.02
I tmight make sense to split books moderation between sci-fi/fantasy/genre readers like Trijhaos and more general readers like KKC, if s/he's amenable...

Tom Coates
07:42 / 01.04.02
What do you mean by split? They're both doing it already, right? Are you talking about a difference in abilities?

ONLY NICE THINGS
15:05 / 03.04.02
Not abilities ina "x is better than y" way, but, f'rexmaple, I would be happy to help out on moderating Books, but have very little to offer on the Sci-Fi/Fantasy sort of book, which makes up about half of the topics there....so have a skills deficit.

But, yes, didn't realise Trijhaos had been made a moderator, so standing corrected. Just over here.

Sorry to anyone who I haven't got back to so far - just to keep things fresh I thought I should probably restate which places now need moderators and if anyone (including the people who I haven't got around to so far) would be interested in taking up one of these positions then let me know...

I'd like current moderators to check that the new people are ok...

Conversation could do with one more person
Policy and Help needs two hardcore people.
Switchboard needs and additional two or three.
Magick needs one or two more.
Laboratory could do with one more.
Art and Design could do with one or two more.
Books could do with one or two more.
Comics could do with one or two more.
Creation needs one more.
Gathering needs two or three more...

Ierne or cusm. – Lothar Tuppan

You know, I asked Flyboy & Flux about this moderation malarkey and they said I didn't need extensive web-fu to do it. So I'm willing to take the plunge – I just hope I'm online often enough to click all the buttons that need clicking and keep things running smoothly.

Cheers for putting me on Switchboard, Tom- if you (or anyone else) have any other handy hints not yet covered, I'd like to hear 'em.
