i could just be stating the obvious, or i could be making some people obscenely happy. either way, i might as well go for it.

a while ago DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist released a stupidly good mix of strictly 45's showcasing both their skills and their comprehensive record collection called brainfreeze. and as everyone knows, it was BEZANGIN!!! an instant classic.

well not so long ago they did a follow up. another work of genius called Product Placement - and this my friend is my pimp.

both are available on audiogalaxy and both come in 2 parts that last about 25 mins each.

so it's a long wait, but boy! it's worth it.

now go get 'em!

Waah!! I left ALL of my CDs in a lovely hostel in beautiful Ceske Krumlov this weekend. Except luckily not my discman, the first Le Tigre album and THANK GOD not Jay-Z Unplugged. (I think I might have started crying, then!)

So I would like to say, "every good song on every album I lost yesterday." But that is far too vague. So instead, hmmm..

How about the Czech version of "Something Stupid"? No, I donˇ't believe in misery loving company.

OK, anything from Stephen MalkmusĀ“ solo album. I would like to say the song about him being kidnapped by pirates, but I can't remember the name and that information is in Ceske Krumlov.

That'd be The Hook, iirc.

Yes, that's "The Hook". There's a very nice live version in circulation right now, I think it's from the "Jo Jo's Jacket" single. Personally, I recommend every single recording Stephen Malkmus/The Jicks/Pavement ever did record. But that goes without saying. From the Jicks record, I'd say go for "Jo Jo's" or "Vague Space" over "The Hook", but hey. It's all wonderful. oooh, or go for "Crimson Alligator (aka Smurf aka Oyster)" for a taste of the new material... and what a great taste it is.

...and now for a real pimp, cos I think that by now, Pavepimping from me doesn't even count, right?

So, who wants power-pop? Like, real old-school power-pop? You know, the kind that's kinda like Big Star or Cheap Trick, that kind?

Well, go for "It Tastes Just Like A Milkshake" by M.O.T.O. (Masters Of The Obvious), which actually kinda sounds just like a milkshake, too. A strawberry milkshake, with two straws, and a spoon.

"come take a sip of my love/ you know what yr getting in a nutshell baby/ come take a sip of my love/ oh yeah!/ you know it tastes just like a milkshake baby!/ on and on and on and on!"

So much fun.

Brand new discovery as of last night: 'Furious' by Ja Rule. It's kinda hard to explain why I like this one, and I'm sure lots of people here will hate it... I guess I like it for some of the same reasons I quite liked the film it's from, The Fast and The Furious, despite the shit ending: it's basically Big Dumb Fun. Ja Rule isn't the most talented rapper in the world, but somehow all he has to do is growl here and holler there and it all works... It's very up-and-at-'em, and ever so slightly menacing. It sounds like the perfect soundtrack to charismatic, pretty and hard people punching each other and blowing things up...

This song kills and eats beard-hop and spits out its bones.

Right about now, I'll pimp a song that none other than our own Autopilot Disengaged recommended to me... "Supafunk" by Jake Slazenger (aka one of the Autechre guys in funk/dance mode).

It's in very limited availability on Audiogalaxy, but I managed to get a copy - it's such a euphoric tune, all cascading funk organs over a nice beat, a smooth bassline, some nice synth solos at the end. It's solid as a rock. Go get it, and don't thank me, thank Autopilot.

I dunno, never heard the term before, instantly understood what it meant = slang genius.

I think it's perfect - it sounds a bit sad cos beard-hop is a bit sad.

Anyhow, anything is better than 'backpacker'...

I'm going with 'head-hop', I reckon, and fuck the lot of ya.

In the last few days, I've been living life in an extremely loud manner, and a track that's been helping me to do this is:

The Icarus Line - 'Feed a Cat to your Cobra'

Stooges, Black Flag and Big Black mixed in a big cauldren with a pinch of added goth and additional sex noises.

Or alternatively, if you want groovy, fun pop:

The All-Girl Summer Fun Band - 'Car Trouble'

Reference points are Kenickie, Shangri-la's, Link Wray. Resistance is futile.

first up, thanx to flux for pushing 'supafunk' - which is, for those who haven't heard it yet, like 60s caper music from mars. dunno exactly what it means when someone pimps yr pimp, but - oh well - whatever...

this time out i'd like to make some noise for lupine howl - made up of exiled members of spiritualized, and - more interestingly - the band massive attack recently chose to collaborate with - rockin' up their bottom end. my chosen song: 'vaporiser' - think space rock, but with way more on the surface bluesability than the genre usually admits.

oh - and while i'm here - i'm increasingly concerned i may have some mutant mix of no doubt's 'making out', which literally consist of a 20second sample, repeated. that's the reason i raved about it so much. anyopne else have this version? or an actual (gulp) song?

A big fat pimp for Melba Moore's "90 per cent of me" comin up.

This track is unfortunately inescapable at the kind of annoying hairdressers-and-models parties that I appear doomed to attend at the moment, but I'm trying hard to not let that detract from it's brilliance.

The reason it's inescapable is that peeps appear to have finally woken up to the genius of those Kenny Dope mixtapes and "Strange games" comps that have been around for donkeys years.

Anyhow, it's a gorgeously thick and soupy groove with a really mellow smooth taste. The song is amazing - all about how she's so deeply intertwined with this person that she can't let 'em go because "90% of me, is you"

Gorgeous...

Ah, but head-hop both sounds quite cool, and could be applied to a wide range of hip-hop. 'Beard-hop' is supposed to sound detrimental... Come here, James Lavelle, and let me hit you with a car.

Anyway, I have loads of credits now, because I haven't been pimping much, so here is a list of tunes that aren't hip-hop, most of which many people will be familiar with already, some of which I'll come back and explain...

The Magnetic Fields - 'World Love'

Sleater-Kinney - 'The End Of You'

The White Stripes - 'Fell In Love With A Girl'

Johnny Cash - 'Folsom Prison Blues (Live at San Quentin)'

Rufus Wainwright - 'One Man Guy'

What's been stuck on my portable MP3 player all week:

My Bloody Valentine - Map Ref whatever, whatever-phaser heavy Wire cover

Pavement - I Love Perth exactly 1 minute long groovy pop song.

Belle and Sebastian - My Girl's Got Miraculous Technique for those of us who are frustrated Stuart Murdoch let's other members write/sing songs on the newer albums.

Today, I shall pimp "Hidden Shadows" by Herbie Hancock.

It's a ten minute electric funk-jazz track, it's massive, menacing, evil sounding. Like a sci-fi porn detective soundtrack. It sounds like it's from the future, for sure. A classic, especially when that sax motif comes in about 3 minutes in...

Nice. My Audiogalaxy stopped working.

A-hurm...

Three pipms today:

I pimped these two artists already, here you have another song from them:

"How It Rains" - Kath Bloom. 'Cos I'm a sucker for love songs.

"Don't Talk To Me" - Butterfly Child. See above.

And Mistakes And Regrets - ...And They Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.
It's a nice crunching tune with some distorted vocals, good to listen while driving.

Nice bit on the upcoming new record from Pitchfork right here, by the way...

quote: DJ Shadow Shares from His Private Stash
Since February 2nd, still on the run from nosy DJ Groundhog
John Rickman and Michael Cavagnaro report:
Perhaps as an effort to dispel the rumors that were beginning to paint him as the Kevin Shields of the white indie hip-hop world, DJ Shadow is coming out with an album. By himself. One that he wrote/mixed/scratched-- and not a glorified (nonetheless glorious) mix tape, either.

The Shadow is bustin' out the battle wax for The Private Press, the much-anticipated follow up to 1996's landmark Endtroducing... and the Shadow's first for a major label (MCA). As you might expect, The Private Press draws sounds and beats from a variety of unlikely sources, including the Shadow's extensive collection of private recordings made at amusement park recording booths. A photo on his official website even depicts what appears to be an oversized fire extinguisher being miked!

One track from the new release, "Monosyllabik," was recently previewed on BBC Radio 1 and consisted of a single two bars of music repeated for more than seven minutes. After six years you'd think he'd have something a bit more showy on tap, huh? Other titles reported thus far include "Giving Up the Ghost" and "Fixed Income." The Private Press is tentatively scheduled for release May 20th.

The Shadow, infamous for creating funk from forgotten vinyl and dustbin oddities, is credited for helping give rise to the "trip-hop" sound of blunted beats and sample-based psychedelia. He eventually signed to James Lavelle's UK label Mo'Wax in 1995, and after the success of Entroducing..., went on to co-produce the debut album by U.N.K.L.E. in 1998. A compilation of the Shadow's early singles, Preemptive Strike, followed the same year as producers and club DJs began bootlegging and wantonly stealing samples from the Shadow's early work. Last year, the Shadow took a detour from work on The Private Press to drop Product Placement, his second collaboration with Jurassic 5's Cut Chemist.

All you DJ Shadow pimps should go back to school and pick up QBert's "Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Musik"

Easily the definitive scratch tape and containing far more interest and originality in five minutes than "Endtroducing" in its entirety, in my not-so-humble opinion.

And Qbert doesn't have a beard either...

I have to say, it does look like he's trying to push a beard out through his chin, doesn't it? "No, no, keep looking, I'm sure I felt something then... can you see stubble yet?"

Oh, alright Mum. I pimp an old one:

World Domination Enterprises - "Message For You People"

The most fantastic bit of guitar noise I've ever heard - unbelievably nasty high-end guitar caterwauling, and fat, bottom-evacuating bass. Manages to be huge without being bloated and sludgy. Unfortunately, nearly every other track on the LP this is from ("Let's Play World Domination") sounds the same, but... *shrugs*

I'd like to pimp 'Sippin' 40z' by Gravy Train - Gravy Train make shamelessly hedonistic queercore hip-hop, and this is probably the best track off their debut EP Menz. If you like Peaches or that Gold Chains tune (or the Moldy Peaches, or Le Tigre, or even the Beasties), you might well love this. The chorus starts:

"I go to the high school, I go to the high school
To find me a bitch, a young virgin switch..."

    And then just gets filthy.
