just to let everyone know that deej shadow's afore-mentioned monosyllabik is up for grabs, via a radio rip, over at audiogalaxy.

it's a strange one - as has been noted, only a couple of notes - but seems he's done virtually every modulation possible with them by the end of the track. weird, insistent electronix. if it's not as immediately accesible or melodic as earlier stuff, you will be glad to hear he's at least refusing the easy option of revisiting past glories - shadow's back and he's pushing the envelope.

oh, and lyra: i hope that QBert mix is better than his collaborative effort with shadow - 'cause that never really grabbed me.

I'll pimp Non-Phixion's "I shot reagan" for kind of cute novelty value, and some good rhymes. None of their other stuff has impressed particularly, but no way am I admitting I liked that track cos Necro was on it, so they must have something going for 'em.

I think that the girl on the Crossover track has one of the sexiest, coolest voices that I have ever heard.

Anyway, I've got a new rule for this thread: feel free to make comments within the thread, but for every post in this thread, there must be a song pimp contained within it from here on out. Fuck the song limit - that's just there so people don't start posting long list of songs, and to keep the quality control high. I think that everyone should stick with some sort of description of the songs that they are pimping - otherwise, why would you expect someone to download it?

It's just so mesmerizing - the chanted hook, mixed with the staccato verses, the odd churning guitars which make me feel a bit seasick.... wow. Of course, this is by the same people who gave us the little slice of pop genius that is "Experimental Fashion" by Banjo-V, which I pimped early on in this thread.

These guys are so fantastic - they need to get famous, and quick. As it is, it's a bit like having my own personal miniature Pavement circa Westing... or a baby Flaming Lips which I can keep in my pocket.

Fog - "Laughing Gas" (off their eponymous LP, apparently. On Ninja Tunes)

This might be beard-hop, I dunno, but it's ace. I think it would appeal to fans of the last two Radiohead LPs. Continuous NASTY distorted feedback scream, treated to sound spooky, in a "horrific monster too far away to be an immediate threat, but best not hang about" stylee. And big drums and messy scratching.

Cor, I like that. For anyone wanting further description, it's a sparse thing and the tune = childish (in a good way) 2-note nee-naw chant delivered by sleepy, lazy man with twinkly eyes. Reminds me a wee bit of Faust ("Sad Skinhead").

They do one of my favourite things, which is a second vocalist shouting/singing their own thing at you from the edge of the, um, aural stage.

My pimp of the day: the only thing keeping me sane at the moment is Charles Mingus' album Mingus At Antibes - which, if you're in the UK and are around when HMV have a sale, can be had for about a fiver. It's a tenner or so full-price. 70 minutes of (as yet) unremastered live fucking brilliance.

The song off this disc I want to get y'all into is "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting" that does what it says on the tin. It's sorta like a hugely bass-driven twelve-minute sound of testifyin'. Saxaphones speak in tones that sound like members of a congregation rolling around on the floor, speaking in tongues. Themes come and go, but it's like a fucking fireball, a runaway train gathering speed until it flattens yo' unholy ass. Schizophrenic drumming, jungle-like riffs of sound echoed by the ensemble: descending into chaos, thumping skins and red-faced horn-blowing before straightening up the Church best and coming together for dignity's sake.

It's jaw-droppingly good. No, scratch that - it's fucking SUPERB.

And it's just the starting track.

Oh man, I could recommend Mingus tracks all day - the man was a fucking genius. I'll throw in "Better Git Hit In Your Soul" which dates back to the same period "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting" comes from, it's another gospel tune, with each instrument 'testifying'. This song is seriously one of the most joyful things that I have ever heard. Eric Dolphy is on it too, which is a major bonus.

I don't think I can really do this song justice with any more words - just hear it, and hear "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting". It will do you good.

My pimp today - an untitled live radio freestyle by the Wu-Tang Clan circa 1993.

It's truly marvelous - it starts off with RZA doing the Wu roll call, and then the DJ starts putting on "Hard To Handle" by Otis Redding, and Method Man starts freestyling over it - Ghostface pops in, fucking it up at first, but then getting into a strong verse with the lyrical highlight "when I speak it's like Merryl Lynch". Raekwon makes a brief awkward cameo, but then Method Man comes back with a perfect improv verse, he's on fire. Early Meth at his best, for real. Think "M.E.T.H.O.D. Man" or "7th Chamber". Ghostface comes back for a bit, then GZA enters with a quick, solid, clever verse. ODB gets a couple lines in and it's over ---
this is a hidden gem for any Wu fan, especially those who love 36 Chambers the most.

The whole session is brimming with energy...it's some of the purest hip hop I've ever heard.

"Time To Get Dumb" by the Lynnfield Pioneers.

A hidden garage rock/funk fusion gem, from the very strong LP Free Popcorn!, released on Matador a few years back.

It's really a shame that Matador dropped the ball in marketing this band, because this song, along with "Maximum Sunshine", also from the record, really should have been huge mainstream hits in the best way.

Highly danceable, begging to be sampled, languishing in a painful obscurity - please, download this song.

"This Room" by The Notwist. It's sorta like a Belle And Sebastian ballad Vs. Squarepusher. Sexy, sinister, menacing... recommended.

The Shimmer Kids Underpop Association "Black Heva Vs. The Ruby Satellite" - this song is enormous, a low-fi super-drone orchestra. Guitars chug along, percussion shakes off in the distance, keyboards and theremins hum, the vocals carry a gorgeous melody with lyrics about cosmic love, it makes me think of old Jack Kirby comics. This is one of my favorite songs, ever.

I would like to pimp the song "Radical Girl" by Go Back Snowball aka Bob "Guided By Voices" Pollard and Mac "Superchunk" McCaughan. Don't be confused: it's really just Guided By Voices.

In a lot of ways it's exactly what I've been wanting Bob to do - add more textures and sounds, especially keyboards and horns, which are the main instruments in this composition. It's a lot of fun - it's a groover, it's mostly just Pollard singing the line "she's such/ a radical girl" over and over for two minutes.

Highly recommended...
