i heard some brilliant stuff last night in a coffeebar and i was excited enough to demand details from the waitress. apparently the songs were from a band called smog. the tracks i heard were from an album called knock knock, which i *must* get, but i've never heard of this lot. it was kind of bluesy. kind of. sounded more like something from the 70s than the mid 90s. does anyone know anything about them?

The lead dude's fucked-up.

I think that's Smog in a nutshell. Bill Callaghan is a troubled, troubled man. But great at bumming the fuck out of you. I've a couple of the albums: Knock Knock, Red Apple Falls and The Doctor Came At Dawn. I think I left their show at the Union Chapel in 99 because I was already feeling depressed and didn't need to get any more down... but that aside, they're great. Simple and... broken.

I only have one song by them, and it goes like this:

[crungy guitars]

It's not even going to be a hit
So why even bother with it?

I'll never be a Bowie and I'll never be an Eno...
I'll only ever be Gary Numan...

But it's grrreat.

Knock Knock has some great tunes, but I reckon I prefer his new one 'Rain On Lens'. I don't actually own it, but I've heard it performed live and recorded the recent Peel session and it's very good indeed, and very VERY dark.

bill callahan is fucked up, but not in the way The Return Of Rothkoid would have you believe. oh no. bill callahan is the kind of man who is intense and surely can be mean, but also has the voice of an angel and writes simple and beautiful melodies. he is also handsome and my most ideal man ever. who wants to fight me for him?
the best smog to start off with, sfd, judging by what you dug about smog, would be 'the doctor came at dawn'. trust me!
rizla, rain on lens is ace.
i need to make a super sexy smog mix. mmmm hmmm.

i'm gonna get drunk

soooo druuuuunk....

at your wedding!

.....

if you know the cat power album 'what would the community think?' the song "bathysphere" is by smog.

smog = veteran of 90s lo-fi who seems to have out-staminaed Sebadoh as far as transitioning to the indie scene of the aughts.

Yes. He's great. Everyone's said it better. Must reacquire my tape of Knock Knock, or better, get it again; I listened to most of it hidden on a side of a tape from a friend, but oh, how wonderful it was.

lo fi 90s --> indie now? the only word ever used to describe music in the nineties was "indie." what means thee?

Ummmm... I dunno. Does anyone talk about lo-fi anymore? it was HUGE in 1991-5, then the four-trackers sort of got supplanted by people who had good microphones & digital home studios.

Compare Sebadoh's Freed Weed to Bakesale. Or early Beck to Odelay. Heck, even Hayden's first and second albums show the difference - they straddle that line kind of perfectly.

Listen to Suds. "The Doctor Came At Dawn" is the best Smog record, for sure. Red Apple Falls is probably the second best. I'm not a very big fan of Smog (honestly, I usually speak of Smog in a derisive way), but I do think those records are good. I've heard every one of them too, except for Rain On Lens.

The very best Smog song is on "The Doctor..." by the way. It's called "Lize".

He can be a little repetitive, both musically, lyrically and emotionally.

However tracks like To Be of Use:

Most of my fantasies are of/
Making someone else come/
Most of my fantasies are of/
To be of use/
To be of some hard/
Simple/
Undeniable use/.

...is undeniably fucking great.

Yeah, I've heard that The Doctor Came At Dawn, Red Apple Falls, and Knock Knock were supposed to be the best. The only latter period Smog album I have is Dongs of Sevotion, which I'm not terribly fond of. It's got a few good songs. For my money, though, early Smog is the shizzot. I've got Forgotten Foundation, Sewn To The Sky, and Wild Love. Wild Love's pretty good, Sewn To The Sky is even better, but Forgotten Foundation fucks my world up. It's nothing like any recent Smog stuff I've heard. It's just all kinds of fucked up noise and crazy, crazy shit. WEREJUSTAROCKINFUCKINROLLBANDITSJUSTROCKNROLLTHATSALL...
It is awesome beyond words.

I just thought that I'd say that I find it amusing that 9 out of 10 threads that I contribute to come to a screeching halt w/one of my posts. That's all.

Agree with most of what's been said in this thread, apart from Arthur's posts. The later Smog albums show a grip and understanding of melody that the earlier ones lack. The lyrics have a stark emotional quality that's neatly wrapped up with some pretty dry humour and a slight wistfullness.

If Held is a particular favourite from what you've heard so far, sfd, I'd recommend that you get Dongs of Sevotion. The immediacy of the melody and the insistency of the beat are similar to a lot of the tracks on there.

I presume you've got Knock Knock by now, so I'd also recommend Red Apple Falls, filled as it is with tracks much like the awesome River Guard.

I'd also advise going to see him any chance you get. I'm in no way a smog fan but the gig was great. And the crowd chat thing he does is one of the funniest things I've ever heard, in a Steve Wright sort of way.

As a disclaimer, it should be noted that I'm a big Skin Graft Records/no wave fan and the early Smog releases really appeal to that part of my musical sensibilities.

I'd just like to pimp the Papa M album "Whatever, Mortal" in this thread. It sounds exactly like Smog meeting Will Oldham (indeed, Oldham provides backing vocals and instumentation throughout), with all the fractured beauty that description suggests.

oh indeedy, yes. even the 'upbeat' songs are quite down and melancholy. i don't think anyone on this thread has recommended knock knock, so i've gotta check out the other albums if they're supposed to be even better. thing is, if i ever saw smog live, it would have to be a small, smoky venue. wouldn't work any other way.

That's a good point; I actually thought that I had recommended it, but somehow managed to forget.

Knock Knock was also my introduction to Bill Callahan. I've been both impressed and disappointed with the rest of his output in equal measures.

i'm listening to rain on lens right now. it's more 'rocky' than knock knock, but still melancholic and very dark. it's wonderful. if anyone hears of smog touring the u.k. please let me know!

i got 'sewn to the sky' yesterday and had a listen, lying in bed during the muggy nightime, punctuated by rain storms, which seemed quite appropriate. not sure i'm too impressed. it sounds like demos, or ideas for songs, a lot of which would be great if they were developed a bit more, but not really as they are. i mean, it's interesting in a chin-stroking kind of way, but i'm not sure it warrants being put out as an album - some of it's so basic it sounds like me messing around on a guitar; not a recommendation at all! but i'll listen to it a couple more times to see if it grows on me.

Bumping, because I just bought Dongs of Sevotion and Rain On Lens, cheap. I prefer the latter, greatly, but swear to god that "Justice Aversion" sounds like something off This Is Hardcore by Pulp...

So did anybody else get Supper yet?

The Return Of Rothkoid

That's the newie? I listened to it on a listening post - funny that - the other day and found that it didn't grab me near as much as Rain On Lens, say. Maybe I'll have to live with it for a while, but given that it's about $30, it's not making it seem awfully essential for me...

It's odd, but I only just noticed that I'm listening to Supper right now. It's become one of those 'go to' albums - the ones that you tend to reach for automatically when you're after something familiar to wrap yourself up in.

It's just a gorgeous, enveloping wedge of music, for the most part. Again, Red Apple Falls is probably the closest comparison - it manages to mix the slow, brittle and wonderfully tuneful stuff with the more forceful, driven songs far more effectively than Knock Knock, where there was a similar range, but the two different styles stood out from each other noticably. As a result, it's a more satisfying album. It's also partly down to the use of female backing vocals running through all the songs, which gives the album consistency.

Driving's a bit shit, though. It'd be close to the perfect Smog album for me, if it weren't for that one track.

I see a new one - A River Ain't Too Much to Love - slipped out earlier this year without me noticing. Anybody get it? Some pretty negatitve reviews floating around.
