i reckon stoatie and myself can give you some tips on the Sisters of Mercy side - and let's face it - they were the best of a bad bunch.

once, i played 'this corrosion' very loud, early in the AM. and my mum woke up to the multi-tracked choirs and thought she'd ascended to heaven. for this reason alone, you have to include - the full - 11 minute 12" version of same.

there are no substitutes.

Earlyish period Cure, mayhap? Though they keep shrugging, "100 Years" or "Faith" are about as goth as they come...

And your arse? It doesn't look as bad as mine. Nobody understands the level of depression that my arse takes me to. Nobody.

Excuse me while I redye.

Perhaps the following aren't regularly refered to as being goth. But they are. They're goth as fuck:

anything and everything by Joy Division

'Nosferatu, Man' by Slint (could be any track from Spiderland, but that one's got the goth-est name)

something or other by The For Carnation

'Aged Dolls' by ..And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead (opening line - 'blood drips onto the tombs of the soulless..')

'Halloween', 'Inhuman', 'Ghostbitch', 'Protect Me You' or 'Brother James' by Sonic Youth (early sonic is way goth)

'Kill Cupid With a Nailfile' by The icarus Line (the goth stooges -(c)me)

And something by Cradle of Filth is surely essential

Peramulator of Poop, god no. I know the band and I gotta say NO, to them being goth. Goth died out the day The Crow was released, and all the 'individuals' started to wear the make up. Then came 'The Masquerade', oh god, no. Goth like many subcultures are now 'off the rail', sanitised and marketed for. Its become make up tips in lifestyle magazines.

My faves:
Sisters of mercy, The Mission, The Neph., BauHaus, Dead Can Dance, The Southern Death Cult, Alien Sex Fiend.

One could check up here

Actually, Goth died the day somebody apart from me and my specially selected inner circle of uber-Goth friends started wearing any black clothes at all. The sheep!

Fields of the Nephilim are fairly much essential. I'd reccomend Preacher Man if you're going for whatever amounts to trendy and Endemoniada [sp] if you're not.

Cradle of Filth? Noooooooooooooooooooo!

A Kerrang! (yes, I used to read Kerrang! It used to be good, ok???) reviewer once referred to the singer as sounding like "a constipated dog with a spanner up its jacksie". Thankfully I can't comment with certainty on the veracity of that remark (having not heard a "constipated dog..." sing), but it does sound about right, and that phrase will, at any rate, probably stick in my head for the rest of my life. But anyway, My Dying Bride are a better bet, if you want some goth metal type stuff in there. And they have violins.

Me like:

'I am stretched on your grave' by Dead Can Dance, because the line "because I still love you, my love, and you're dead" makes me laugh. I'm sorry... I know it shouldn't...

Fuck, I love the Cure. I could not choose one song. All of 'Faith', lots of early stuff, lovely, lovely... I like some of the later stuff too, and they were great great great live.

'In the Flat Field' is my favourite by Bauhaus.

Yes, Joy Division are definitely goth...couple of the songs off 'Closer' are particularly cool, but I can't remember what they're called...

The Mission are a bit ick, Fields of the Nephilim similarly so...and I've only liked a few Sisters of Mercy songs (like 'Bury Me Deep' and 'This Corrosion', because I am very predictable).

'She Moves Through The Fair' by All About Eve?

Miranda Sex Garden?

Do the Cranes count?

Does Diamanda Galas count??

Yup, not "None more Goth" more "Not Goth" Black lipstick and New Rock boots do not a goth make.

Do the Cranes count?

yes they do. swoon

Does Diamanda Galas count??

Yes but she's far to harsh for this compo unless you can recomend something by her that isn't.

Loadsa her stuff isn't particularly harsh imho... Her album with John Paul Jones - 'The Sporting Life', and 'Malediction and Prayer' both have various songs that are pretty radio friendly (or I'd play 'em, if I was a DJ)...

Can you name me some tracks? Keeping in a cure/sisters/neph/bahaus sort of tempo.

Hmm...it's really hard, because I like almost all the songs on these two albums. I'm not sure how well they'd necessarily fit into your tape, but:

from 'The Sporting Life':
particularly 'Last Man Down'
but 'Tony' is also dark without being screechy, so those two might fit best.
'Baby's Insane' and 'Dark End of The Street' are easy listening, 'Skotoseme' and 'Hex' are very cool too...

and from 'Malediction and Prayer' you might want to try:
'Iron Lady'
'My world is empty'
'Live the life' and
The world's most depressing song ever (allegedly) 'Gloomy Sunday' (though I reckon personally that Moby's 'When it's cold I'd like to die' is the world's most depressing song ever, but that's another thread)

No idea if that'll help at all...

Oh and I'll second the Cranes and Miranda Sex Garden. Wow its fun discovering these lot properly :-)

Al, to rot my own thread try stuff like Front line assembly, Skinny Puppy et al.
Fish about in the Industrial section of audiogalaxy. It'll be fun.

Oh, Riz thanks for the sonic youth tip, i've only listened to them from goo on. I fear you just cost me a shit load of money.

Just about anything by the Damned after Machine Gun Ettiquette and even some of the songs on there, like "I Just Can't Be Happy Today" "These Hands" and a couple others that I can't think of right now without the CD in front of me. "Grimly Fiendish" is my favorite of the straight up goth stuff.
I have a goth comp with the Cramps on it, so, being that they are one of the most brilliant bands ever, you could put some of their stuff on there. "Goo Goo Muck" (the song that was on the comp), "Garbage Man" or "Human Fly" could fit right in.

Siouxsie and the Banshees. SIOUXSIE AND THE FUCKING BANSHEES. Any one of the singles will do - Playground Twist and Israel were probably their most 'goth' sounding; something off the Hyaena album ("Swimming Horses" is LUSH) would go nicely next to a Cocteau Twins or DCD track. Cities in Dust is a corker, too. Man they did some cracking pop.

Danielle Dax is also essential. You've got the obvious pop tunes, or there's some creepy stuff off the early EPs (Jesus Egg that Wept etc).

Ahhhhh, at last a discussion about Goth and Industrial music!

I love you all!

Dead Can Dance rock my world!

Does anyone have an opinion on a UK Industrial band by the name of Leechwoman?

Thank you my soul can now rest in it's red velvet lined box of peace!

I am so not worthy. Oh yes!

New album coming out in the next couple of months, coincidentally...

As for Siouxsie: I vote for "Happy House". Play it after The Cure's "A Forest" and see if you can figure which is which.

Ooh, ooh - Birthday Party: "Release the Bats". What could be more goth than a "sex vampire", eh? Fit nicely between Bauhaus and Cramps, I reckons.

Ican't believe Bauhaus came up and no-one said "Bela Lugosi's Dead"! (ok, apart from Angel, who referred to it indirectly- your "red velvet-lined" boxes don't get past ME!)
Joy Division, I'd go with "24 Hours".
Sisters- "This Corrosion", or possibly "Alice". Or "Temple of Love". I'd better stop on the whole Sisters thing now.
Sex Gang Children- "Into the Abyss".
Rudimentary Peni- "Blasphemy Squad".
Alien Sex Fiend- "Ignore the Machine".
Fields of the Nephilim- "Preacher Man".
Diamanda Galas- "Iron Lady".
umm... somebody stop me.
Dead Can Dance- "Black Sun".
Coil- "Anal Staircase".
Into A Circle- "Forever".
The Bolshoi- "Away".
I think I'd better stop MYSELF now, before I mention that Christian Death track (yes, I know 99% of their stuff is/was shit) which opens "Catastrophe Ballet" with the line about "I want to sleep in the night in his eyes in the rain in Berlin". (OK, so that album was less shit than most, but STILL...)

I'm laughing uproariously at the concept the Cradle of Filth are somehow not '4 real'..

..I mean, like, are 'real' goth-death metal bands actually vile, blood-drinking immortals from the depths of the Dark Lord's Satanic Kingdom?

"huh, look at those bloody fakers - they're human! ha ha!"

I mean, come on, they have songs called things like 'Cthulhu Dawn' and a deep voiced guy who rants about dark armies rising from lost kingdoms and slaughtering the puny, human cattle and a 'shocking' S&M stageshow.. what more do you want?

(though, admittedly, they're not a patch on the mighty Bal-Sagoth!)

For atmosphere and beauty try Heidi Berry.

Also try the Black Heart Procession. You'll love them. Just your sort of thing Uncle Resp.

Illusion of Safety - odd noises, they did a song backed with tapes of interrogations at some point - 10 countries it's called.

erm.... i'm starting to digress so i better stop.

May I suggest Killing Joke's Darkness Before Dawn and Love Like Blood? They're both from the Night Time album (1985). KJ aren't a Goth band per se, but the Goths I hung with back in the day fucking loved those two songs. I always think of the Pyramid Club when I hear them...

Sorry about the editing of what you said, but Cradle of Filth is trying to be Black Metal, not death metal, there is quite a difference, neither of them is "goth" really, but Black Metal is a lot closer, what with there corpse painted faces and songs about being kings of Hell.

Iggy Pop's late 70's stuff would fit in on a goth comp too, esp. The Idiot (the album Ian Curtis was listening to when he killed himself) and most of the songs on Lust for Life that aren't "Lust For Life" esp. "Some Weird Sin."

er, yeah, now you come to mention it, 'Death Metal's the really fast, noisy, cool stuff isn't it? 'Black Metal's the gothic larks .. though I think it would work better if the names were reversed.

For anthemic goth Bela Lugosi's dead has to be on any compilitaion of this type. Though personally I prefer Third Uncle.

I'd also suggest either Dawnrazor or Moonchild for Fields of the Nephilim and New dawn Fades by Joy Division.

If you want to include either American Goth or silly european dark electro then I'd suggest How Can I Hold On by Stabbing Westward (are they supposed to be a goth band?) and the hysterical Love Never Dies by Apotygma Bezerk, respectivly. But stay very far away from Type O Negative.

The really fast, noisy, cool stuff is thrash metal, which is closely related to speed metal, it's just a bit punker (or you may even be talking about grindcore, which is both extremely fast and noisy). Death metal is a bit slower and heavier, although it does get fast sometimes. The best way to tell death and black metal apart is: death metal people just want to be thugs, black metal people want to be tyrants (princes or kings of Hell and the like).[/off topic]

So, could Danzig be considered goth? If so, "Twist of Cain" is a mighty good tune.
