Perhaps as an effort to dispel the rumors that were beginning to paint him as the Kevin Shields of the white indie hip-hop world, DJ Shadow is coming out with an album. By himself. One that he wrote/mixed/scratched-- and not a glorified (nonetheless glorious) mix tape, either.
The Shadow is bustin' out the battle wax for The Private Press, the much-anticipated follow up to 1996's landmark Endtroducing... and the Shadow's first for a major label (MCA). As you might expect, The Private Press draws sounds and beats from a variety of unlikely sources, including the Shadow's extensive collection of private recordings made at amusement park recording booths. A photo on his official website even depicts what appears to be an oversized fire extinguisher being miked!
One track from the new release, "Monosyllabik," was recently previewed on BBC Radio 1 and consisted of a single two bars of music repeated for more than seven minutes. After six years you'd think he'd have something a bit more showy on tap, huh? Other titles reported thus far include "Giving Up the Ghost" and "Fixed Income." The Private Press is tentatively scheduled for release May 20th.
The Shadow, infamous for creating funk from forgotten vinyl and dustbin oddities, is credited for helping give rise to the "trip-hop" sound of blunted beats and sample-based psychedelia. He eventually signed to James Lavelle's UK label Mo'Wax in 1995, and after the success of Entroducing..., went on to co-produce the debut album by U.N.K.L.E. in 1998. A compilation of the Shadow's early singles, Preemptive Strike, followed the same year as producers and club DJs began bootlegging and wantonly stealing samples from the Shadow's early work. Last year, the Shadow took a detour from work on The Private Press to drop Product Placement, his second collaboration with Jurassic 5's Cut Chemist.
