most of you probably have this, but in case you missed this classic: gonzales - take me to broadway.

and a lesser known party classic: gold chains - rock the parti (see, it does exactly what it says on the tin!).

happy listening. i'm gonna download some recommendations myself. tell me what you think.

oh shit. i can't resist. has everyone got: the avalanches - run DNA and with my baby. if you haven't, please download now. and yes! it is compulsory.

Flux, that "ooah-ooah-ooah-ah" from "The beginning won't get out of my head, no matter what I try. Those guys rock!

Didn`t like that much the no doubt's one, though.

So, um.. anyone had a go at the ones I pimped? No? Thought so. Oh well, let's see how things go this week...

Re: Gold Chains "Rock The Parti" - not only is it brilliant, but it is built out of a sample of one of my all-time favorite tunes, "Crest" by Stereolab. Wow! Thanks, Nikon. Be back soon with a pimp or two.

You Pretend That You Depend, But Now You Are, Are You, Visible? - From The Cranium. Sounds like a swarm of angry epileptic insects descending into a garbage disposal or a horror movie soundtrack that's been dissected and randomly rearranged by a monkey. I'm only quoting.

oh, The Crainium - nice. they can be a bit much - but they are nice people, and are interesting to see live. the singer is a total flake on stage.

About the Gold Chains song: good god, I'd be pimping that song if it wasn't being pimped already. That song is just so incredible, and it's a bit like a huge angry guy with a gun pointed at yr feet, forcing you to dance to a song you would have been dancing to anyway. Scream it out: "WHO ROCKS THE PARTY? WE ROCK THE PARTY! EVERYBODY ROCKS AT THE GOLD CHAINS PARTY!" I love it, the punk/dancehall/hip hop/kraut combo mixed with this feeling of intimidation and nervousness...

My recommendations for today:

"I Need A Freak" by Sexual Harrassment. Another sexy dance funk tune, very sparse and a bit on the slow groovy side. A man speak-sings a list of what he needs his 'freak' to be - lots of echo, lots of synth and back up vocals. If you liked the Crossover song I pimped last week, you'll love this one too.

The other song I shall pimp is The Slits cover of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". To back it up, I'll quote my old pal DJ Twitch/Stirmonster, who places it in his
Top 7 Optimo Classics.:

quote: Surely everyone in the western world knows the Marvin Gaye version of this song. Originally co written by legendary songwriter / producer Norman Whitfield who went on to cover it on his own Undisputed Truth project (also played at Optimo), we are going to go out on a limb and say that The Slits version is thee one.

So, who were The Slits then? They were four girls who embraced the punk ideal that anyone could start a band, only all the bands seemed to be boys so...Viv Albertine, Tessa Pollit, Palmolive and precocious 14 year old singer Ari Up got together to do it their way. At first they were better known for causing a ruckus wherever they went and indeed, Derek Jarman cast them as car wrecking urchins in his punk film Jubilee. Their reputation made it hard to secure a record deal but finally Island records stepped in. At the same time, Palmolive left and drummer extraordinaire Budgie (later of The Banshees and Siouxsie Sioux's future husband) joined in her place. They proceeded to record their first album with reggae producer Dennis Bovell and the resulting 'Cut' took many people aback with its depth and proficiency. It also caused quite an outrage with its cover art depicting the naked Slits daubed in mud.

Listening to 'Cut' today, it has aged far better than most of its punk contemporaries and well deserves its classic status.

Island wanted to release a single from the LP and picked the song 'Typical Girls'. At very short notice, The Slits had to record a b-side and as Budgie was away, they went into the studio with a friend drumming and a couple of 'dubhead' mates to record a cover of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine'. When Island heard the results they insisted it be the a-side but the band refused. It's a shame really as for once the record company was probably right and The Slits would almost certainly have had a hit with it. It is a gigantic bass driven groover of a version that sounds incredible to this day. The point where Ari changes the lyric to 'I heard it through the bassline' is epic. I must have heard this hundreds of times over the years and have never tired of it and it's a joy that people at Optimo seem to like it too.

The Slits are just brilliant all the way around, their original material is just as fabulous as this (significantly re-arranged) cover. Also consider looking for "Love Und Romance", "New Town", and "In the Beginning There Was Rhythm". The latter track is also the title track of a new compilation put out by Soul Jazz Records. which contains other post punk dance tracks, like "Coup" by 23 Skidoo, "Knife Slits Water" by A Certain Ratio, and "24 Track Loop" by This Heat. All brilliant. But definitely go for "Grapevine". It's stunning.

The Cranium really put my head in the ringer after my last listen, but I'll give them another try.

Here's two:
party of helicopters - mt. forever
This band has been increasingly pervasive to me of late. I started out despising them. But something shifted and I'm caught in their soaring nonsense vocals. Reminds me of a faster, thundering Shudder To Think.

Speaking of...
Craig Wedren & Theodore Shapiro - Higher adn Higher
They wrote this song for the Wet Hot American Summer soundtrack. It is my current favorite. Listen to it anywhere!

Lost by Neurosis insanely heavy epic song about enlightment. The intro is the best as a sample of a man descibing a pattern or repetition runs over a hypnotizing slowly building bass line. Eventually drops like a ton of hammers.
Fucking Zen Barbelith-core.

Defecate On My Face by TISM.

Okay, I am waving the flag for Australia here, but I don't know how to describe this in any way which will make you want to hear it. But, you should. Basically, it's an early track by dance-inflected indie/comedy band This Is Serious, Mum. It's a monologue from the point of view of Hitler, about his desire to have Eva Braun shit in his mouth. It's an absolute pop classic and much funnier than that makes it sound - childishly grotty rather than cynically button-pushing. Bonus points if you can find the country and western version.

Today, I shall pimp a song by the band who I'm going to see play tonight - The New Pornographers' "The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism". The song is pure sugar rush powerpop, the record from which it is taken is certainly one of the finest pop/rock records of the past two years, and it deserves all of the acclaim it has been getting - it's just hook heaven, I actually had some trouble figuring out which song I was going to pimp here.

Oh yeah, the songwriter of "Slow Descent" has said in interviews that the song is his attempt to capture the bright side of drinking heavily.

Richard Hell & the Vodoids -- "Betrayal Takes Two" -- A kinda slow, very countryish jagged punk song about relationships gone horribly wrong.

Dropping in for a quick double pimp of that Edan tune. Every record shop owner in London seems to want to touch their toes for that guy at the moment. I dunno - he can be pretty annoying, but that tune is great "instead of R&B bitches, I do my hooks with japanese kids"...

But fuck Erick Sermon's "Music". I can't believe he released that tripe. I will try and pretend it never happened and carry on listening to my EPMD records.

My big pimp at the moment is Styles of Beyond - 'Style Wars'. It's a couple of years old - it was the bside to 'Spies like us' which is the closest they've come to a hit. I never flipped the record over till this year. Damn this track is hot. It has an even better cello loop than "MCs act like they don't know" which is fukn saying something... It's so big and ominous yet melodious and then the mcs come in with their trademark insistent fast-paced delivery and the track just takes off. Don't give a shit about the lyrics - they're typical indie hip hop nonsense, but on a purely musical level it's the shit. You will be humming the riff afterwards - guaranteed... When I stick it on I let the instrumental play immediately afterwards, it's that good.

For I'm about to get laid romantic music:

"Strawberry Letter 22" - either version that's big at the mo and unfortunately I can't remember who does 'em.

For I may wanna lay you, and I may be crazy about you, or may I actually hate you romantic music:

"Was I In Your Dreams?" by the fantabulous Wilco

For an introduction to Wilco:

"Monday" (also from the Being There album)

For rockin' chicks either singing a tribute to Pinkie Tuscadero (aka Suzi Quatro, aka Fonzie's girlfriend, aka my first idol because she was actually COOLER THAN THE FONZ!):

Tuscadero - "Leather Idol"

"No strings attached
Unless
You count the laces
Leather fits
In all the right places
So leather me up
And wash me down

PINKIE! AND LEATHER!

Are coming to town.."

That should do me for now...

Anyone with any f***ing sense knows that there is no excuse for making a song go on for more than 2 minutes. Anything longer is utter rubbish (and that's a scientific fact, and you can quote me on it). Therefore, I'm pimping:

SLUDGEFEAST

"Look out baby because here come Sludgefeast, with cheap out of tune guitars, a broken drum kit, and more distortion than an L.P. left on a hot radiator. Sludgefeast are a 3 piece band who rock like no other with songs no longer than one-and-a-half minutes, and no shorter than eleven seconds... ...Live they are crushingly loud, always proudly out of tune, and give you the feeling that they are only just capable of playing their instruments well enough to scrape through each song."

I recommend the following tracks:

"N.Y.C."
"Baby You F*** Me Up"

(This lot were pimped to me by someone who actually listened to and liked the Gary stuff which, btw, is less than a minute long and therefore exceptionally good, probably better than we deserve, in fact).

k - i've got a three-part pimp going on:

first up, i'd very much like to recommend four tet's 'everything is alright' - a dreamy, open-ended piece of experimental electronica that sounds completely pastoral, and has soothed my troubled soul for two days straight.

secondly, golden boy feat. miss kittin (of hacker fame) with 'rippin' kittin' - musically a very straight, glacial dance track, but with homicide instead of love as subject matter. sing-a-longa kittin: "mummy... can i go out and kill tonite? i feel... i feel like taking a life..."

third - i'm torn - fuck it - know that blackalicious' new track 'paragraph president' is out there waiting for you to download it - and if you haven't heard mf doom's 'i hear voices'... do.

Link to Gold Chains Rock The Parti. I downloaded all of the other Gold Chains songs that were online, but I wasn't really moved by them. I can't get enough of Rock The Parti though. Instant classic, for me. It makes me want to DJ a party soooooooo badly if just to see whether it would make people go into dancing overdrive, or scare them straight out of the building. "Here's the plan: equipment in my hand, get Stereolab on stage as the back up band! Turn up the speakers, so we can blow them!" Good idea. I wish this guy would join Stereolab fulltime and give them a much-need jolt...

I'm not too crazy about Black Dice, but the drummer (who I actually know, he's my best friend's ex-boyfriend) recently did the percussion for the new self-titled Pixeltan EP, and that record is fucking brilliant - he's drumming at supersonic drum n bass rpms alone, unaided by machine - the guy is a drumming god. It's funky, it's got really messed up synths and heavily treated vocals. Unfortunately, in spite of all four songs being on my harddrive, it's apparently not available on Audiogalaxy. You can either buy the EP or download the songs for 79 cents each on
Mordam.com (search for Pixeltan). If you download just one song, go for "Beats Prepare For Torture". It's fantabulous.

In other Brooklyn/NYC songpimpin' news, you should also consider looking on Audiogalaxy for "Grown Men Don't Fall In The River, Just Like That" by Liars. Moldy Peaches anti-folk intro leads to intense Les Savy Fav style mathpunk groover freakout with a singer who's a bit like Damon Albarn at his shouty punk vocal best. Just a really great song about "filling the void that work and rent create".

Cherry : Strawberry Letter 22 is by Shuggie Otis.

Flyboy: get cracking, man.

E. Randy: "Ananda Is The Ocean" is just so jaw-droppingly beautiful - a lovely child-like lullabye. I am so glad that I know that song now...

They Might be Giants w/ doughty - "Mr. Xcitement"... kinda old school D.M.C. style rhyme.

Nicole Blackman, any of the old pomefone stuff ("What I want for Christmas"), or with the golden palominos(look up "Ride"). she's got a way with a turn of phrase that scares me sexy.

music for beautiful mornings:
Kid Koala - "Emperor's new groove"

The Williams Fairey Brass band covering 808 state's "Pacific".

Magic Theatre - Kula Shaker. Dreamy, eerie track, with whispered vocals and a feeling that makes you look over your shoulder repeatedly.

I agree 100%. Actually, 'I Come From San Francisco' isn't bad, but nothing his self-titled EP is anywhere near as good as 'Rock The Parti'...

Okay, my first choice for today is 'Drunk By Myself' by Nas, one of the songs that *should* have been on one his last-but-one LPs if he wanted people to take him seriously again... but it wasn't. It's deeply introspective, bleak, downbeat hip-hop, casting Nas in near-suicidal drunk driver mode, gun under his seat, wife who's sick of him waiting at home, piano sample tinkling away unhappily.

Boo-hoo.

6th pimp this week, probably the best:

I'm lost for words on this one. It's the most sad, beautiful song I've heard in a long time. The chorus is just like someone poking you in an open wound. And listen to those lyrics...

11:02 / 21.02.02
On my way into work this morning I picked up an old, label-less minidisc that I must've made about 18 months ago and hadn't listened to in ages. The first track on it was Thirstin Howl III - "Polo Rican" which got me grinning and jiggling at the bus stop.

I really wanna pimp Thirstin because the guy is a genuine star who unlike many underground acts would benefit from the mainstream success that he's easily capable of. And "Still live with my moms" is an anthem for my friends (mainly due to one particular man in his 30s that still does live with his moms).

Anyway, this tune is a reference to Thirstin's first brush with fame, when he was a renowned shoplifter in New York who only ever wore Polo Ralph Lauren clothing (he still does). He cusses all the other hip hop brands, lapses easily into Puerto Rican slang spanish every few lines and just carries the whole thing off with incredible panache and swagger. It's hilarious.

"When I die, bury me with my 'lo on..."

Today:

On the occasion of me being fairly broken-hearted about missing their show at Brownie's tonight, (they should be hitting the stage in about an hour, I guess...), I will be pimping the song "Essplode" by Avey Tare, Panda Bear and The Geologist.

The Onion's AV Club describes them as "mercury laced quantum folk music that shines like halogen through squinted eyes...mixing primitive caterwauling with organic electronics, sounding like a tender mix of Radiohead, the Sun City Girls, and Cabaret Voltaire..."

The song itself sounds a bit like smiling with glee while having a nervous breakdown - a beautiful vocal melody with mostly incomprehensible lyrics but palpable emotional quality navigating itself through a stormy sea of uneasy drumming, electronic hums, and electric guitar strums.

One of the finest tracks from 2001, by my reckoning. Probably the best band currently in NYC/Brooklyn along with The Walkmen, too...and there is some stiff competition, if just in this thread!

Lambchop - My Blue Wave

From the new album, Is A Woman. I've been a fanboy for a few years. Kurt Wagner can create the prettiest, slowest and yet most purposeful sounds. The Lambchop sound is pared down here, harking back to the days of How I Quit Smoking. If anything, this record contains an even more basic instrumentation than that. Most of the tracks consist of just Wagner's broken, halting vocals over a few notes played on a piano. On hearing of the change in sound I was a bit concerned. The previous album, Nixon, was nearly perfect in the way it crossed Gram Parsons with Curtis Mayfield (I know that sounds a bit shit, but there's not really any other way of describing it). It was alt-country with sweet, sweet soul in its bones. I needn't have worried, really. The soul is still there, in spades.

Anyway. The song. A truly heart-breaking melody, a melancholy lyric. Aw, fuck. Just download it.

quote:You lay around the house
Nothing much to bark about
Jump onto the bed
Just bones and squirrels inside your head
This is the only life I see
For you

And if I gave a crap
Would that show you where my head is at
I would ride the moon
And even if it comes too soon
I could fall for you
And you could fall for me

So we go all to the shows
And happiness is all we know
How it got to you
And how it got to me too
I wish I never knew
(About) my blue wave

And William called and tried
To tell me that his sister's boyfriend has just died
He's not sure what to do
And I'm not sure what to tell him he should do
Sometimes William we're just screwed
(In) my blue wave

So what's the girl to do
Sits on the couch and she's feeling blue
Shakes it in the cup
And she doesn't mind if it stays up
Up up oh yeah
Never mind the world
My blue girl

And the best is yet to come
You may think you are the only one
To never get it right
Just stick around on this lovely night
And we may be amazed
By my blue wave

To conclude this interview
Many facts and fictions you construe
The dog gives you the paw
You pat his head and you wipe his jaw
He's the only one who knew
(About) my blue wave

I remember reading that Wagner composes all his songs while sitting in a chair on his front porch, the sounds of the countryside surrounding him. Even if that's just PR rubbish, it's how this song feels. Perfect listening for when you're down. Wistful, dreamy. A sly smile at all the crap.

Hate to sound like the old guy, but I have fallen deeply in love with Dick Dale lately, and his version of "Ghost Riders In the Sky" is a thing of joy. And I love threads like this, since here in the Twin Cities, all but the pop 40 station is stuck in playing the same old stuff from years past.

The Classic Rock station actually proudly says they don't play any song that isn't at least 15 years old.

Anyway my pimp for today would be:

The Rainbow

It's a bit of an old song, but what the hell, it's just so much psychedelic-beatlesque fun. I can bet everyone who listens to this will end up humming it and singing the chorus before you end listening to it for the first time.
