holy heck, Flux - you the man!

I didn't know half that stuff existed..

(though obviously I'd debate your selections of 'essential' tracks, but since when have two fans of the same band ever completely agreed on that sort of thing.. )

I repeat for the record: Camper Van Beethoven did a bluegrass cover of "I Love Her All the Time."

Which actually worked.

Anybody ever get any of the stuff Lee Ranaldo did with the Master Musicians of Joujouka (or whatever they're called)?
North African noise.

Weird connections: Steve Shelley plays drums on Cat Power's "What Would the Community Think?" album.

I've also got an odd little single of Lydia Lunch singing "Death Valley 69" with SY.

And, dude, you've TOTALLY skipped the "Made in USA" soundtrack.
Which was brilliant stuff. lots of remixes of "invisible boy" or whatever that song is called. along with lovely little dissonant, melancholic instrumental breaks.

Oh wait, it's in your second list.

Sorry.

Had something to add, but forgot.
Now I Wanna Be Your Dog... w/Iggy Pop.
and
Providence
are two of my favorite songs ever.

Is the "made in the USA" album still available? One of my ex-roomies had it on clear vinyl and I listened to it the first time I took mushrooms.

Sigh. College.

BTW, on the Tibetan Freedom Concert CD there's an instrumental live version of "Wildflower Soul" from A Thousand Leaves that totally kicks the ass of the recorded version.

And also "Dear Sir" which I bought the other day. Also features some pretty SY-esque guitars, um, not that that really matters, since they're not being played by SY.

didn't she sing on the original version of the song?

1. I know about the Fall covers Peel session bootleg EP, but haven't heard it. Would love to. I have the tracklist, I might check Audiogalaxy for it... I have a full SY discography in a book by Alec Foege called Confusion Is Next (highly recommended for all of those interested in a detailed history of the band), I think anything that falls through the cracks I will find online for the sake of being thorough.

2. The recorded version of "Death Valley 69" features Lydia Lunch, whether it be on the single or on the Bad Moon Rising LP...

3. I do believe that DGC has put Made In USA out of print, but no one really bought it, so if you look around, you'll find it. I'm sure it pops up on eBay. It's a non-essential recording, so I imagine a lot of folks don't mind ditching it.

4. The version of "Wildflower" on the TFC comipilation rules. I was there, too. It was the highlight of their all-instrumental set that day...

5. I will be also adding the Goo demos bootleg to the list...

some justification in this...

am presuming this means you can't fucking dance to it... having seen entire clubs full of people having a pretty good stab at dancing to autechre, plaid, mira calix, cylob etc...

He also played on Two Dollar Guitar's Train Songs album; very meditative work that is the only thing to approach Eno's Apollo in that genre. Don't know if he's on their other discs - Smokey Hormel is, though. Once more, anyone who can come across a copy of this album for me will earn my eternal gratitude, as I can't find it in the UK anymore...

Also; Lee Ranaldo produced a couple of EPs and the debut album for Townshend-lovers You Am I, a couple of years ago. He shredded a bit on some tunes, too.

If you happen to see my credibility, could you please ask if it would at least consider coming home again?

I suppose the Harry Crews band with Kim & Lydia would also be considered a side project. I loved one song they did, Waitin' for the Word Come Out the Gospel Singer's Mouth. Band was named for a creative writing professor in the UF English Department.

I know this isn't relevant to the project at hand, but - how many side projects ARE there?

Non-essential? Feh!
I love that weird, short stuff.

I got MMMR (Loren Mazzacane Connors, Jean-Marc Montera, Thurston Moore, and Lee Ranaldo) for $5 at a going out of business sale at one of the mall shops a while back. Send you a copy if you want.

a list of IDM essential albums/singles would be excellent. So far i've only got a couple of squarepusher and b.fleischmann albums and a aphex twin single.

Wow, thanks for resurrecting this thread - I've got a good amount of free time right now, and I'm actually going to make good on my promises in this thread. For real. I'd forgotten all about this...

Take some of that free time and look through the old threads. Like the one where 9 out of 10 people said Since I Left You sucked. I made old threads entertain me for a couple of hours last night. Much fun.

what about the thurston's entire ecstatic peace record label catalogue (which would then get to include Destory All Monsters! as well as that hilarious record they did that is just the endings of songs from a Venom concert)? and sy's awesome cover of Computer Age on The Bridge - A Tribute to Neil Young? or thurston's soundtrack to Heavy? & don't forget the richard kern movie that has thurston bleeding on the floor -- is that death valley '69 or a different film?

oh anyone interested in babcock's fela article (which is completely definitive and should not be attempted at home) can find a reprint in a book edited by douglas wolk who's name escapes me but which is a collection of great music journalism.

Anytime you think you've got the complete list of Sonic Youth related stuff, check this out and weep. When do they find time to sleep?
