That's all Kathleen Hanna being Kathleen Hanna being Kathleen Hanna. She's got a long history of being a horrible catty gossip prone to extremist views and practices. Her music wouldn't be the same if she wasn't that way, but lord, she can be a terribly misguided person at times. Personally, I think the whole "women only" thing is just sexist bullshit, and then by excluding transexuals, it just makes matters worse. I understand their intentions, but two wrongs don't make a right, never.

Fun fact: the loft where I've been living was initially a punk rock venue til the landlord put an end to that a few months before I moved in. At one party hosted there, a bill of various female DJs played, and one, a friend of K. Hanna (who was present) was asked to stop playing after a half hour of her playing floor-clearing music that was prematurely ending the party...Hanna went on to use her vast gossip network to badmouth the place as a venue for art and music...meaning loads of girl bands would not play on bills there, they opted to instead play the militant feminist lesbian sex commune DUMBA down the street while all the bands full of boys (Les Savvy Fav, !!!, Orchid, etc) played where I've been...

I like Le Tigre, Julie Ruin, Bikini Kill, etc, but I think Kathleen Hanna is a bit of a jackass, honestly.

You don't listen to the lyrics, do ya?

"Adrock's down with the Ione [Skye]/ like she's the cheese & I'm the macaroni"

Mike Diamond is the only one still unmarried (MCA married some Tibetan freedom avocate).

Y'know, if you're trying to convince us that New York *isn't* the coolest place on earth, you're not doing it very well.

Ooooh yeah, let's bitch about Kathleen.

I am sooo loving this thread. My take on the Michigan Women's Music fest is that it's cool that it's women-only. But not cool that they're transphobic. Then again, MWMS has always been run by a pack of typically rabid radical feminists who started it up in the 70's (there are some pretty amazingly flowerpower films out there of naked dykes wandering though the grass) and people have always been angry about the way it excludes women who don't practice 'proper' feminism. The leatherdyke contingent were forced to camp at the edge of the land for a while during the eighties.

That said, I understand why it's a big deal (for precisely the reason that Michigan has a history of various contestations around feminist issues). If I was coming out and all babydykey excited about hanging out with lots of women and had the chance to go, I'd fucking love it. Now, I reckon I'd rather go to Ladyfest. Then again, I'm on the wrong side of the Pacific.

And I LOVE Le Tigre.

Has anyone heard of Tracey and the Plastics? Radio from the Need and someone else doing disco..... ? I'm trying to get hold of something of theirs. Have heard it rocks.

some crazy new sounds this last week that keep klickin' my ass...

The Polysics - Hey! Bob! My Friend!: like the most MESSED up hyper DEVO stuff ever, only magnified by this Japanese trio, guh! and they do a cover of Pizzicato Five's "GOOD !" which is beyond all explination

winterbreif - Take This Town: not nearly as good as the previous "complaints from the beauty class" cd but still speedy synth popish stuff, some songs are almost TOO bis-ish than on the other one, but it's not like it's a bad thing

The Aquabats - Myths, Legends and Other Amazing Adventures VOL 2: okay it's not new, but i just started listin' to it again findin' all the fun musical injokes, like findin' the reference to Fishbone's "? (Modern Industry)" in "Pizza Day" i almost had to pull over i laffed so hard... yeah

The Return Of Rothkoid

I'm meant to be reviewing it (and a load of others) but I can't stop playing John Hudak and Jason Lescalleet's Figure 2, which is a live recording of some drone manipulations, made in a church during a storm. Warm, initially, but then creepy as fuck. S'good. Also good - in parts - is Michael J Sheehy's Ill-Gotten Gains, which makes a good stab at sounding like Roy Orbison (or Chris Isaak, when it's a bit dodgy) meeting Barry Adamson. Grower, that namechecks Bill Hicks.
