Stuff You SHOULD Be Embarrassed About... But AREN'T!

Based on the "'E.T.' vs. 'Krush Groove'" argument in "Dogma", I propose an antithesis of the the "stuff you're really embarressed to like" thread. Behold: The "I Love It & I'll Defend My Opinion To The Death!!" Thread!

My potential embarrassment du jour: I love early Rod Stewart records and consider "Smiler" to be in the Top 50 (if not the Top 20) of the best Rock 'n Roll records ever made. Listened to it today and it's just such a cool, loose groove record. Besides, it really says something when you can work some mandolin licks into a rock record. Hey, don't laugh, I play mandolin (*ahem* poorly).

Anyways, what'll you defend to no end?

Britney Spears.

No, really.

What's so weird about liking Britney Spears?

I like loads of 'uncool' pop stuff of all stripes. I like loads of uber-cool music too. It's all the same to me.

I find Aqua incredibly moving and poignant. Van Halen are unquestionably the greatest rock band ever to grace the planet: criminally underrated critically, they influenced vast swathes of dumb assed and credible musicians. Marillion have written some of the most amazing songs ever: “No One Can, ” “Beautiful,” “The Release,” “Afraid of Sunlight,” “Sugar Mice,” “A Collection,” “The Bell in the Sea,” “Dry Land” (even though it was originally by How We Live - but no one I know has heard the original, and it was co-written by H in the first place). Queensryche were great, too! Haven’t heard their last album, though. “Mindcrime” rools (the album, not brainwashing).

I'll agree, The Bell In The Sea is amazing... I have a live version on the tape Captain Zoom made me, and I love it...

Do the Beatles count here? And Buddy Holly? If so, then they're here in fucking spades...

Why should there be embarrassment about Anthrax? They are just so good. I feel a rousing chours of NFL is in order.

I suppose I should be mildly embarrassed about liking Ministry. Most people of taste look at me like I'm insane when I mention them, and they're completely out of sync with the rest of my record collection.

But it's brilliant stuff - it's like house music for miserable, paranoid, antisocial people..

Rizla I actually spent an album searching and downloading songs from Ministry's "With Sympathy" album.

Pity me...

Brian Eno. I'm sorry, I think a lot of his music is wicked, and nothing will change my mind.

He used to be a bit of a prat, though. Getting better now, from what I've heard.

But WHY "should" any of you be embarrassed about liking any of this stuff? Have the courage of your convictions, for fuck's sake, enough to say "no, I SHOULDN'T".

For example: Bono is an idiot, a sanctimonious pissant in fact. But he has a knack for writing songs I like. Therefore, I like U2. Anyone who tells me I "should" be embarrassed about liking U2 I will disagree with, quite strongly.

Stupid, stooooopid thread title...

None of us are embarrassed by this stuff. Hence the thread title.

I guess we've just observed a tide of critical opinion that is at odds with the artists we've mentioned. Sometimes it's also a tide of popular opinion. The fact that we have stated we like in the topic shows we're not embarrassed (and I'd defend it in person, not just on the site. In fact, I have defended it, many times).

What's wrong with admitting that the stuff we like isn't acclaimed or popular? It might cause someone to reassess their opinion, or give a chance to tunes that aren’t “approved” listening. Jack the Swaggering Cloud of Darkness has already got several people interested in giving Marillion a go, through his sheer bloody mindedness.

More crimes against the cultural elite, please!

Well, if that's how people are interpreting it then fine - I thought it was "songs I like but can't normally admit to liking cos they're not cool", and my point is we should move beyond that outlook entirely. Which I guess is also your point. Ah, the dissolving of differences...

I dunno. The word 'SHOULD' (in capitals, too) suggests that this is music that it's somehow wrong to enjoy.

The Verve- Urban Hymns. Mighty fine, soulful, anthemic, hugging heterosexual men and telling them you love them. It's a shame that Ashcroft is a bit of an arse but still...

Those who despise Ministry have no taste!

Seriously though, I get a lot of dirty looks when I profess my love for early Genesis...Supper's Ready, anyone?

The first two Thomposon Twins albums have to be my cross to bare. A PRODUCT OF...PARTICIPATION and SET are great. They were indie punk back then and this was before the hits but still mention this in public and prepare to lose friends quickly.

Duran Duran.

Fleetwood Mac's 'Go Your Own Way', 'Everywhere' and 'Sweet Little Lies'.

Spandau Ballet's 'True'.

Early eighties Roxy Music, esp. 'Avalon' and 'Don't Stop The Dance'.

Yes, very good.

Indeed.
