pixies had 5 studio albums (come on pilgrim, surfer rosa, doolittle, bossanova and trompe le monde), a hits/live album (death to...), a few comps (live at bbc, b-sides, anything else?), and at least 2 tributes.

buy in this order: surfer rosa, doolittle, come on pilgrim, trompe le monde, bossanova, live at bbc, death to..., b-sides, etc.

believe me, it's for the best...

and mr. black's solo work rocks my world.

The nine-track Pixies release came out today. I bought it but haven't listened yet, just thought I'd bump the thread.

What is it then?

I would have thought that the Pixies catalogue was all but exhausted in terms of new releases..

It's apparently the 'purple tape' - which was a long-bootlegged version of some of the band's earliest demo songs - some of which went on to form Come On Pilgrim. Interestingly it's a very good little album, which includes a couple of songs that haven't been anywhere else and a good number of quality versions of songs they wouldn't release until much later or in different forms. More interestingly, perhaps, they're also really very poppy in feel - these are not difficult to listen to songs, they're not particularly intimidating, they're not even very early-pixies scary. They sound a lot more like what the band eventually became rather than what they seemed to be when they started. It's a really good little album - sharp, punchy, well (under) produced but clean and clear. Probably not worth £14 unless you're an obsessive pixies fan, which I am of course, but CERTAINLY of equal quality to the Pixies and the BBC collection and the B-sides album...

I am surprised to hear so little (and a lot of it so negative) being said about Frank Black's solo work.

I discovered both Frank and the Pixies in recent months from completely separate sources, and fell in love with them both. However, for quite a while I had no idea that I was listening to the same vocalist. Even for a while after I found it hard to make the connection.

I happen to love both, but they are so different that someone who is a fan of one may not necessarily like the other. I have listened to Frank Black and the Catholics most days for a month now and I've loved every minute of it. The Pixies are more of a once in a while thing for me.

I think the main thing about Frank's solo work is his vocals. From hearing mostly Surfer Rosa, I got the impression his vocals in the Pixies were more supplementary to the overall sound (comments please), whereas his solo stuff is very much led by his vocals, and this makes the music what it is. The vocals are what makes his music so exceptional, nothing else.

On a personal note, I have found Frank's music helpful with writing my own lyrics. He has reminded me that you don't have to write profound poetry all the time for it to be effective. Sometimes quite simple sentiments delivered in a conversational style can be even more so!

Frank Black - Black Letter Days and Frank Black & The Catholics - Devil's Workshop should be in stores August 20th. Both are floating around the various file sharing services if you cant wait.

Eeek!

...and I have to wait?! And it has his version of The Black Rider!

This rocks. Has anyone heard the cover of 'Cactus' on the new Bowie album? Very good and very creepy. You can also download a bowie/black duet of Scary Monsters which is quite good.

Humble Pi: I think I have met 2 people ever who agree with me that new Frank Black rocks. I love his stuff more than the Pixies, and love his new "about 1 album a year" schedule.

Debaser, Where is My Mind? (beautiful theme to Fight Club, I thought, as well), and who can ignore Caribou ??

I loved that album, man...'"I've Been Tired"...fucking brilliant.
