If you guys haven't heard Atmosphere, I highly recommend them.

They're from my neck of the woods.

Thought I'd just drag this one up from the dead to add those DJ Yoda mix CD's - funny as piss, and good tunes too! Any one else heard 'em?

I've been enjoying the RJD2 longplayer, Deadringer. Unfortunately, the man's been monikered "The New DJ Shadow" by the fucking NME, and they have a slight point... but it's rather good. In a "samples, not beats, damnit!" kind of way. Most obvious in track eight, "Fuck Hip-Hop". Not sure it's enitrely top, but rather good anyhow. Have got the Mr Lif album to listen to at some point.

But yeah, it's been an interesting yeah pop-hop wise, blah blah blah Neptunes. They can do no wrong (bar that Snoop track). And "In Search Of" grows on me daily, especially the magnficent Run to the Sun.

ATmosphere!

"Don't Ever Fucking Question That" and "Lovelife" are superbulous tracks. Anyone up for hip hop's answer to the Omega Gang should check Prefuse 73.

"We have to make them scared again."

The Roots' new one has some very tired tracks, but "Rock You" ought to be their entire new direction. It's bumped.

I actually thoroughly enjoy/ed Lif's "I Phantom" and, really, you all MUST pick up Paullalujah by MC Paul Barman. He's this era's Fresh Prince.

Hmmmmmmmm, what else. As far as Atmosphere, the same praise is accurate for the satellites of the group: Sole, Slug, Eyedea, et al. Aesop Rock has a stunning track with, I believe, Opus, something about a "Basement".

If you like Five Deez, their producer Fat Jon has a great new solo effort out. If you like it a bit abstract: Boom Bip, Caural, and, whew!, Beneath Autumn Sky are tremendous.

Jay-Z unplugged also = nice

Somebody played me a track off of Busta's newie the other day - not Genesis, the new one. Anyway it was heavy, deep, dark and det. If the whole album is like that it's a return to the apocalyptic form of his heyday...

This was a pretty good year as far as I'm concerned, and there's a few releases that haven't been mentioned yet.

First of all "Blazing Arrow" by Blackalicious is AMAZING!!! I was skeptical, although I don't really know why. Perhaps the whole stigma of being signed to a major label, made me skittish. I went to the store one day and it was on sale new for $9.99. It would have been worth it at twice that price. Solid all the way through.

THe other album that blew me away is "Absolute Power" from Tech N9ne. THe best part is that the album is available for download at www.therealtechn9ne.com You'll have to listen to a few commercial messages suggesting that you go out and buy the album (with free bonus DVD), but the tracks are so strong you won't mind at all. Great lyrics, tight rhymes, and excellent production. Download it and love it!

And I second the recommendation of Jay-Z Unplugged. Pure fun with the Roots band!

This ers's Fresh Prince - is that a compliment?

Just remembered - the best track I've heard all year was the new Onyx tune - not Slam Harder, the b-side Hold Up - it's fucking amazing, got the most killer cowbell jingling ting thing going on all the way through. All you lucky bastardos with broadband should download it immediately.

Paleface: The RJD2 is great - kinda like DJ Shadow if he made tunes instead of disappearing up his backside. The samples are so cleverly done - its one I didn't thing I'd like at first but have played over and over again.

I think you're a bit harsh on Shadow there (said the stupid fanboy) but I do kind of appreciate your point of view. And it does grow into a more rounded album the more you listen to it, he's structured it carefully and he picks the vocalists well. And 2 More Dead is just this brilliant track for all sorts of situations. Yes, very impressed with it, but it's taken about five listens to really grow on me - the first was passable. Oh, and the first track irritates me now for some reason.

Of course it's a compliment, Illmatic! Remember when Fresh Prince was, you know, funny? Well, I mean, Barman is light years beyond Fresh's best work, but still, there's no one as funny and pop cultural as him on wax these days.

Rjd2 is good, "Smoke And Mirrors" is the theme music to the end of every novel I've ever wanted to write, but I dig Jel a bit more.
