Hey y'all. No spoilers, no trailers.
I started this thread to mock a group of people.
There is apparently a movement underway to change the name of the second LOTR film.
"The Two Towers"

Think about it for a second.

I swear, whenever I start to feel alright about mankind, some fucking idiot comes up with shit like that. So from now on we're supposed to retroactively change everything just in case it has anything whatsoever to do with a tragedy.

What a lotta crap.

Has anyone else seen the new edit of Star Wars? Lucas changed it slightly so that Gredo (sp?) shoots first in the bar scene. This way Han Solo is simply defending himself. Not only does it change some of the dynamics of the story, it looks like shit. There is no reason for Gredo to shoot. It's just this sudden laser blast out of no where.

Eh?
Rumour has it that in Spielbeard's new digitally remastered ET the government agents chasing the kids are now carrying walkie talkies instead of guns. Hooray for digital revisionism! Can't wait for the new edition of All the President's Men where it turns out Woodward and Bernstein made the whole thing up...

what a lot of silliness.

And after witnessing the trailor for some horrifcally propagandic looking Ridley Scott/Jerry Bruckemheimer(or whatever) "Square-jawed GI's surrounded by nasty little brown people - listen to the rousing music as they become life-long friends and shoot a bunch of baddies" film, I reckon someone should make a blockbuster extolling the joys of violent terrorism, just for the sake of balance..

Argh, can't find the article. It was in the Toronto Star. Peter Jackson said that there were some people who had qualms about naming it the Two Towers. He also said if they changed it millions of Tolkien fans would kill them. No worries I hope.

>>>Rumour has it that in Spielbeard's new digitally remastered ET the government agents chasing the kids are now carrying walkie talkies instead of guns.<<<

Not rumour - cold hard unpalatable fact. The clip in question is in the trailer.

All the more galling because Senor Spielbergo has been one of the most vocal opponents of tampering with old films (e.g. colourization). Apparently it doesn't apply to his own work...

The Two Towers thing is absurd. Let's go change the title of classic literature written decades before the tragedy...

Are there any links to back this up? Because I seriously doubt that it'll actually happen. Just from a marketing point of view it would be absurd, the film and book having different titles.

The Spielberg thing seems remarkably similar to Lucas changing the Star Wars cantina scene, and I'd imagine he'll be dishing out the same excuse; "The original was a mistake, this is how I always really wanted that scene to play out."

Yes, and it also insultingly presupposes that the only structures in the world that people may associate with the word 'tower' were the part of the World Trade Center.

Are you serious? Is that Lucas' excuse? Then why the hell does the scene just look fucking terrible, and make absolutly no sense? Lucas has lost any balls that he used to have.

Ok, heres the skinny
Black Hawk Down is based on an excellent book, which happens to be about soldiers in a country where they are trying to be killed by GASP little brown ppl, kinda like the orcs in LOTR, how cool would it be if instead of orcs it was WASPs?

ET--also taking out the scene in which the kid wants to be a terrorist for halloween

2 towers--that would be a pitifull sad thing to happen and i would boycott at that point
next thin "King is to masculine, make it return of Aragorn instead" eeewwww

Relax, folks. No worries.

Jackson: "It's a 50-year-old book. We can't change the title. Tolkien fans would crucify us.''

Puhleeze. Those real airmen and soldiers were there to help the people of Somalia. Some of them gave their lives for that righteous mission. Your cynicism is really sad, and a bit offensive.

I remember reading some interviews with US Marines in Somalia during the American intervention. Their opinion was that the whole situation was fucked and all the wanted was a confirmed kill.

That said Black Hawk Down is an excellent book and not a flag waver, be interested to see if the film has been turned into propaganda, I had heard that it hadn't been. Incidently if it is based on a true story should the skin colour of the antagonists be changed to make it politically correct?

And you're a bit of a self-righteous tosser, aren't you? He's talking about the horrible, horrible buddy-war movie they've made from the book of the real-life event, you fucking muppet, not the event itself.

No, don't mind us, you just carry on jerking the knee, there...

Brief comment on this stuff - knee jerk reactions to a knee jerk reaction are no better. Passion like this is better employed in some creative enterprise...

Here is an online petition someone started to rename the Two Towers film.

Now it may look like 1242 people petitioned, but it's a lot less. I actually counted it up one day. Let me check my notes. 182 legitimate names.

Yes, but they're all cocks and if anyone thought that Jackson would actually go for it then, well, they just don't know Jackson. Not that I do, but anyway....you know what I mean.

The Two Towers trailer reminds me once again why I feel sorry in a deep and compassionate way for peeps who don't dig on Wacko's wicked ringfests. I don't get it, Flux, I really don't. Stylistically the films are so unique and cool and everything big films should be, but aren't.

Let's not forget Jackson's woeful job on the script. He may be a film maker, but he ain't no writer. Lenghtened the wrong bits, shortened the wrong bits, the excisions were okay, but generally it's a mess. Pivotal scenes like the council of elrond and lorien were ruined.

I'm waiting for the dvd with the extra scenes which will hopefully be more balanced.

And I think we can all agree that at times Jackson gave in to Speilbeardisms. Arrow-cam anyone?

The Natural Way

I don't agree with that - we could go round and round that territory forever and never reach a concensus (although, if Flyboy can be bothered I believe he's the man for the job), so let's not go there, eh?

And Jackson was in constant consultation w/ his wife and others re the script. It must be so hard to decide what to lengthen, what to shorten, what to include, what to omit.... The film has its own pace and there's plenty of good characterisation if you look for it. First blockbuster in years to convince me to care about the characters. I really don't feel the need to cuss the film at all. There's loads of stuff far more worthy of criticism.

And I've had a look at the 'King Kong' script: bloody good.

loomis: And I think we can all agree that at times Jackson gave in to Speilbeardisms. Arrow-cam anyone?

Well, he's been doing this all down the line, in different ways, depending upon what he could afford. If you've seen Bad Taste and Dead Alive/Braindead then there's not much in the first LoTR pic that's outside the scope of what Jackson's done before. He's very visceral, and I'm kinda suprised there was so little of that sorta thing in Fellowship. He comes from that Raimi "hide the budget with the camera" school. Fortunately he makes it work.

But I can't stand the thought of another King Kong film, unless Mike Mignola gets involved somehow.

Hey man, I don't have any problem with Jackson, or how Lord of The Rings was filmed. I think it was a beautiful film, and very well-crafter. It was the story that makes me want to dig out my own eyes with spoons. It's Tolkien's fault.
